Who are The Young Wolfe Tones?

Extra.ie5 days ago
Irish rebel band The Wolfe Tones played what they say is their last ever performance at Limerick's Thomond Park on Sunday to a packed stadium.
The trio, comprised of Brian Warfield, Tommy Byrne and Noel Nagle, were set to retire last year but announced two further gigs at the Limerick stadium for their Final Farewell, having enjoyed a particular resurgence in recent years.
The band were formed in 1963 by Brian and Noel who were joined by their neighbour Liam Courtney.
The following year, Brian's brother Derek came on board, and then Tommy joined the band, replacing Liam.
The four-piece went on for almost 37 years before Derek left the band in 2001.
Derek had been performing solo alongside his band duties, and continued with his solo career up until 2006. Following his departure, Brian, Tommy and Noel continued as a three-piece. They went by the name Brian Warfield, Tommy Byrne and Noel Nagle, formerly of the Wolfe Tones and released their song, You'll Never Beat the Irish along with the album Child of Destiny.
Since Derek's departure from the band, his relationship with his brother has been frayed with the pair revealing in 2017 that they hadn't spoken since the split apart from an on air argument in 2009.
This took place on Liveline when a discussion began on who owned the rights to the band name, with Brian at the time noting his brother was 'getting restless and wanted to do his own thing.'
Last year, The Wolfe Tones celebrated their 60th anniversary. Meanwhile, while Derek pursued a solo career which boasted 11 albums he also formed The Young Wolfe Tones.
The band is comprised of six members with Derek leading, along with Damaris Woods, Andreas Durkin, Eddie Kane, Paddy McGrandles and Brent Hopper.
The band have a number of concerts coming up, with a certain crossover between The Wolfe Tones due to Warfield's connection to both.

Charlotte Tilbury cult 'magic' cream slashed to 'unheard of' €42 in huge sale

Charlotte Tilbury's cult-favourite moisturiser has just had a rare drop in price, and Irish beauty fans are wasting no time snapping it up. Known for its luxurious formulas and celebrity following, Charlotte Tilbury's skincare line rarely sees major discounts - especially on bestsellers. The iconic Charlotte's Magic Cream, hailed by fans as "the best moisturiser ever", is now half price as part of the brand's major summer sale. Normally, two 50ml refill jars would cost a hefty €175 - but right now, shoppers can pick up two of these refill tubs for just €85, making each pot just €42.50 - which is practically unheard of for Charlotte Tilbury. Described by Charlotte herself as "magic skin", the cream is a "skin revival moisturiser" that "retexturises, smooths, firms, plumps and primes the look of skin in one step". Infused with a "Magic Matrix" of ingredients - including hyaluronic acid, vitamins C & E, and a plump-effect peptide complex - it's clinically proven to improve skin's texture and hydration. Originally created backstage at fashion shows to transform tired, dull complexions, this cream became so popular with models and makeup artists that it quickly gained cult status. Tilbury says the "instant miracle turnaround cream" became a beauty industry secret before going viral - and has remained a global favourite ever since. With a 4.6-star rating from nearly 6,000 reviews, fans call it a skincare essential. One shopper said: "This is my 6th pot... I absolutely love it". Another wrote: "Always go back to this! My favourite moisturiser ever!" One review summed it up saying: "The best moisturiser I have ever used and I have used many." Many reviewers swear by this cream's results. One happy customer wrote, "It leaves the skin feeling plump and healthy," while another said, "My face feels the difference and my mirror shows me how." Another fan added: "This cream is fantastic, it melts in to the skin [and] doesn't leave your face greasy like some moisturisers". Even those with tricky skin types are singing its praises. One reviewer said: "I have THE most fickle, hyper-sensitive skin... but blow me down if it isn't the lightest, most nourishingly, moisturising cream I've used in a looong time!" Magic Cream is full of skin-loving ingredients that delivers fast, visible results (Image: Boop Beauty) Several shoppers love how the cream performs under makeup. One said: "It works really well in keeping my makeup looking fresh all day long." Another added: "Amazing product! Glides on the skin making it a must-have preparation for the perfect makeup look." Some say they saw visible changes quickly. One wrote: "That cream is really magical - all my skin problems disappeared in a week. Since then my skin is beautiful!" Another echoed this, writing: "Definitely lives up to the name, magic! Beautifully nourishes my skin and leaves me feeling as if I have just had a facial." However, others weren't sure about visible improvements. One said: "Absolutely love this cream. It leaves my skin feeling velvety silky smooth all day. Not sure if it has improved the look but definitely has the feel." Another mentioned the high cost of the cream, saying: "Everything about this moisturiser is amazing, I've had 3 lots now and while it is pricey I love it. It feels like a treat everyday." For customers who've struggled to find the right product, this one seems to be the solution. One reviewer said: "After years of trying to find the perfect balance for my skin, this is it! I would really struggle without it now." Another summed it up: "I seriously can't live without this product!" For more information or to buy Charlotte's Magic Cream 50ml Refill Duo, click here to visit the Charlotte Tilbury website. Delivery is available across Ireland for €3.95 - or free on orders over €59. Thanks to the cream's popularity, a wave of potential dupes has hit the market - including a £6 (€7) version from Penneys that's been gaining attention online. Beauty fan @beautyglowgirl tested Penneys PS Pro Hydration Cream with SPF 15 against the original Magic Cream and found both felt luxurious under makeup. While she noted that Tilbury's version had a "strong fragrance" and left "a bit of a film", the Penneys version was "ultra-hydrating", fragrance-free and "sinks in better". Despite liking the budget option "a lot", she admitted the two creams are "definitely not the same". Meanwhile on Amazon, the Revolution Beauty London Pro Miracle Cream has also been hailed by reviewers as a potential dupe for Charlotte's Magic Cream - and costs just €8.98 One shopper said: "I don't know if this is a dupe or not for the Charlotte Tilbury Magic cream but this did wonders for my super dry skin and made my foundation look perfect." Another claimed: "Its a dupe for charlotte Tilbury, i love it." A third reviewer agreed it was a decent alternative, but added a humorous downside: "Miracle cream is actually a decent dupe for CT - except for one thing - it smells like Drakkar Noir from the 80's boy scents with an overtone of Giorgio for the Beverly Hills older ladies-- BLECH!!!" Oasis's Croke Park gigs are a homecoming for the 'Irish' band

What's the Irish for 'mad fer it'? Liam and Noel Gallagher may be asking that very question before taking the stage at Croke Park next month for the highly anticipated Irish leg of their Live '25 reunion tour. The gigs at Heaton Park last weekend were a return for the Mancunian-born brothers, but their return to Irish shores will be a different kind of homecoming. As everyone knows, the brothers' parents Peggy and Thomas are Irish emigrants. Peggy left Charlestown, Co. Mayo in 1961 at the age of 18, originally working as a housekeeper in Manchester. There, she met her fellow Irish emigree Thomas 'Tommy' Gallagher, who hailed from the Co. Meath village of Duleek. Their first child Paul was born in 1966, followed by Noel in 1967 and Liam in 1972. The brothers made regular trips to Ireland as kids, and one photo from the 1970s depicts them standing at the wall of their Irish granny Annie Gallagher's home in Downstown, Duleek with their uncle's dog. Many school holidays were spent in Charlestown with their maternal granny Maggie Sweeney, too. Noel recounted those summers in a Late Late Show interview in 1996, telling Gay Byrne: "My mam used to religiously drag us by the ear across the Irish Sea to spend summer holidays there. We had never seen the likes of nettles, fields and stacks of hay and all that - so she was determined to give us a bit of Irish culture, 'cos we were used to concrete and flats, and all that stuff. It was a bit of a culture shock for the first four or five years, but we grew to love it and we still do." As adults, both Liam and Noel have embraced their Irish roots wholeheartedly - and they've made regular returns to Charlestown, too. In 2015, footage emerged of Liam joining in a session and having a sing-song at JJ Finan's pub which has become his local while holidaying in the Mayo town (according to reports, he also bought nine bags of Tayto in the local shop on the same trip, lest his heritage ever be questioned.) Noel, meanwhile, made the headlines last year when he was interviewed after a Man City match. When asked about City player Phil Foden playing for England in the Euros, he said "I'm not an England fan. I'm Irish. Goodnight." Tongue-in-cheek, perhaps, but we'll claim him nevertheless. We'll even overlook the Union Jack guitar. Indeed, the issue of that particular guitar was once put to him in an interview with comedian and podcaster Matt Morgan. "Somebody said last week "If he's so Irish, why does he have a Union Jack guitar?" said Morgan. Gallagher responded: "Because somebody got it for me for my birthday, and I guess it's like a pop art thing, I suppose. It's not a nationalistic thing. I think I only played that guitar at like, two f**king gigs ever. I think that's in some museum somewhere now." Noel also reckoned that the Irish music and rebel songs that they were raised on had an impact on Oasis's music, and its "punch-the-air" quality. "I feel as Irish as the next person," he said. "The first music I was ever exposed to was the rebel songs the bands used to sing in the Irish club in Manchester. Do you know, I think that's where Oasis songs get their punch-the-air quality - from me being exposed to those rousing rebel songs. It was all rebel songs and that godawful Irish country and western music." So far, at least, the influence of Big Tom and the Mainliners has gone undetected. Will there be a divergence from the setlist for an a capella version of A Nation Once Again? Will the Wolfe Tones' Celtic Symphony replace F**kin' in the Bushes as their intro music? Noel has gone as far as to proclaim how the band owe practically everything to their Irish heritage. "Oasis could never have existed, been as big, been as important, been as flawed, been as loved and loathed, if we weren't all predominantly Irish," he said in Simon Spence's Oasis biography Feeling Supersonic, noting how all of the band's founding members - Paul 'Bonehead' Arthurs, Paul 'Guigsy' McGuigan and original drummer Tony McCarroll were also of Irish descent. "There is rage in Oasis music and let me explain that to you. If I say to people there's rage in the music, people might think about screaming and shouting - but you can rage joy. When the Irish are sad they are the saddest people in the world, when they are happy, they are the happiest people in the world. When they drink they are the most drunk people in the world. There is one rule for the Irish and different ones for everybody else. Oasis could never have existed, been as big, been as important, been as flawed, been as loved and loathed, if we weren't all predominantly Irish." Watch: Noel Gallagher on The Meaning Of Life with Gay Byrne It does concur with his previous comments about his cultural identity, however. "I clearly remember my mam saying to me and my two brothers when we were growing up: 'You're only English because you were born here'," he said in an interview in 2007. "And with a mother from Mayo and a father from Co Meath, there's not a drop of English blood in me. I recently had a child with my Scottish girlfriend, and there's no English blood in him at all." We'll have to wait and see how it plays out at Croke Park, the first Live '25 date tour date that's not on British soil. Will there be a divergence from the setlist for an a capella version of A Nation Once Again? Will the Wolfe Tones' Celtic Symphony replace F**kin' in the Bushes as their intro music? Will they wear matching Irish football jerseys donated by Bono, come out sipping pints of Guinness or have a tricolour hanging off an amp? No matter what happens, there's no doubt that the Brothers Gallagher will be welcomed as hometown heroes. And 'mad fer it' is 'ar buile', by the way.
