Five vehicles were involved in the fatal crash on Interstate 40 West and North Hollywood around 3:30 p.m. local time on Saturday, May 31, the Memphis Police Department said in a statement obtained by PEOPLE. Officials said the first vehicle was traveling westbound on I-40 when it struck the rear of the second vehicle, causing a chain reaction crash, according to CBS affiliate WREG-TV. Three people were pronounced dead at the scene, and a fourth was transported to St. Francis Bartlett in non-critical condition, police said. Youth Villages, a nonprofit organization, has confirmed that its employee Tonya Cannady and her two sons, Barry and Scott, were killed in the crash, according to WREG-TV and FOX affiliate WHBQ-TV. 'Ms. Cannady was a wonderful part of our organization, celebrating 22 years with Youth Villages this year,' the nonprofit's statement read. 'She touched the lives of thousands over that time, including children and staff, most recently serving as our nutrition services manager for our West Tennessee residential locations.' The organization continued, 'Our hearts go out to her family during this time. She will be missed by so many of us.' Youth Villages did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment. All lanes of traffic on I-40 and North Hollywood were blocked for several hours on Saturday following the crash, according to a post shared on X by the Memphis Police Department. An Army reservist who witnessed the incident told WREG-TV he pulled over to help a woman break a window of a Jeep Grand Cherokee that was involved in the crash. MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A day after a deadly multi-car crash, a witness told WREG that he tried to help victims. Memphis Police said that five vehicles were involved in the wreck on I-40 and N. Hollywood around 3:30 on Saturday afternoon. Officials said that while vehicle #1 was traveling westbound on I-40 W and struck the rear of vehicle #2, which was also traveling westbound on I-40. Data says there have been 17 homicides in Frayser this year

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The investigation into the death of a man outside a Frayser shopping center continues. Now, Memphis Police are asking for the public's help to bring the suspect to justice. 'It's getting worse. It's going to get worse,' a Frayser resident said. People working at the Frayser Village Shopping Center on Frayser Boulevard went about their Sunday morning as usual. However, some employees WREG spoke with said they are still processing the events that happened the day before. Memphis Police said a man was shot and killed. The brazen attack has customers and people living nearby talking. Those WREG spoke with did not want to go on camera for their own safety. Man killed in Frayser shooting 'I said, 'Did the security guard shoot him?' I thought maybe he was stealing,' a resident said. 'They said, 'No. It was another person who shot him.' And you know that's a norm out here.' Surveillance video viewed by WREG showed a man leaving a tobacco store. Suddenly, a man wearing a black hoodie and a ski mask appears, shoots the victim and runs off. Police said that the suspect fled in a silver late-model sedan. All of this took place in broad daylight while the parking lot was packed with unsuspecting shoppers. 'Don't nobody care who they shoot,' a resident said. 'They just shooting.' We spoke with a woman who works at a nearby business, who said she's still traumatized by the act of violence. She said she even tried to help the victim, but it was too late. He was pronounced dead on the scene. Man hospitalized after Frayser shooting This shooting comes after a violent start to the year in the Frayser community. According to the City of Memphis Safer Communities dashboard, there have been 248 aggravated assaults and 17 murders in the 38127 zip code this year. Just hours after the shopping center shooting, another man was shot in the 3700 block of Donna Drive, only two miles away. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition and one person was detained. People WREG spoke with said they fear the violence is only going to get worse. 'You can't say more police because they're out here. They are out here,' a resident said. 'You see them all day long, but it's like they don't care about the police. They don't even care about going to jail.' Police said the Frayser Boulevard shooting is an ongoing investigation. If you have any information about either shooting, you are encouraged to contact Crimestoppers at 901-528-CASH. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
