World Athletics cancels Road Running Championships 2025

The Hindu25-04-2025

World Athletics announced on Friday that it had cancelled the 2025 Road Running Championships, a month after it was moved from the initial host city of San Diego.
Track and field's governing body said it had 'held discussions with a number of alternative hosts, some with great potential' for the championships that had been scheduled for September 26-28.
Following last month's decision to move the 2025 World Road Running Championships from San Diego, the World Athletics Council has opted not to reassign the event due to limited preparation time for elite and mass races.
The focus now shifts to the 2026 edition in Copenhagen. — World Athletics (@WorldAthletics) April 25, 2025
'While some of these discussions will continue for other editions of the event, the World Athletics Council has decided not to award the Championships to an alternative host this year due to lack of essential planning and preparation time required to cater for both elite and mass participation race elements,' it said.
The next World Road Running Championships will now be held in Copenhagen on September 19-20, 2026.

India's first-ever international javelin throw competition, which was scheduled for May 24, is being organised by double Olympic-medallist Neeraj in collaboration with JSW Sports and sanctioned by the Athletics Federation of India. The star-studded 12-man event, to be held at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium, will feature seven of the best javelin throwers in the world and five Indians, including Neeraj. The other four Indians are Asian championships silver-medallist Sachin Yadav, Kishore Jena, Rohit Yadav and Sahil Silwal. Neeraj Chopra Classic rescheduled to July 5 in Bengaluru

Neeraj Chopra's invitational javelin event – NC Classic 2025 – has been rescheduled to be held on July 5 in Bengaluru, organisers JSW Sports confirmed on Tuesday. The NC Classic was postponed from its original May 24 date last month due to the India-Pakistan cross-border conflict last month. Some of the world's top stars are set to line up for the event at the Kanteerava Stadium next month. Former World Champions Anderson Peters and Julius Yego, as well as Rio 2016 champion Thomas Rohler, were among the international stars confirmed to participate in the event. Neeraj had also reached out to the reigning Olympic champion, Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem, who later opted out of the event. The wait is over. ⏰The Classic returns. Neeraj Chopra Classic is back — July 5 in Bengaluru 📍#NeerajChopraClassic #Javelin #NeerajChopra — Neeraj Chopra Classic (@nc_classic) June 3, 2025 Neeraj, in a press conference last month, had said hosting this event, which was given Category A status by World Athletics, was a dream come true for him. 'People always ask me about what next after the Olympics, World Championships, Diamond League, etc. All my medals are special and are kept at home. It's great that I have won those. But, this… hosting such an event, I actually feel that I have given something back to Indian athletics,' he had said. Originally, Neeraj had said Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem was invited, just as most of the top javelin throwers in the world were. But he issued a statement later saying Nadeem's participation was out of question after the events of Pahalgam where 26 civilians were killed in the terrorist attack on April 22. India's two-time Olympic medallist has been in prime form from the start of the 2025 season. On May 16, Neeraj breached the 90-metre mark for the first time in his career at the Doha Diamond League with a throw of 90.23 metres, becoming only the 25th man in history to achieve the feat. He followed it up with a second-place finish at the Janusz Kusociski Memorial in Poland the following week. Tickets for the Neeraj Chopra Classic 2025 event in Bengaluru on July 5 are now available exclusively through the District app by Zomato. Fans who purchased tickets for the original date and did not request for a refund can use the same tickets for the rescheduled event. Prices for the event range from Rs 199 to Rs 9,999.
