The Atlanta Falcons made a few changes to their coaching staff and scouting department on Wednesday evening, including three promotions. The team bumped up James McClintock to area scout. Cami Pasqualoni was promoted to personnel/coaching assistant, and Kevin Weisman to football administration and personnel assistant.
Atlanta also hired two new scouts and a physical therapist. Alex Brown will serve as BLESTO scout. Kelvin Moore was hired as a scouting assistant. Aaron Williams will serve as a physical therapist.
According to the team's official website, the Falcons added three Bill Walsh Fellowships and two training camp assistants (see below):
Shaunessy Fisk: Scouting training camp assistant
Jarred Gray: Bill Walsh Diversity Fellow (Training Camp)
Erik Harris: Bill Walsh Diversity Fellow (Offseason Program)
Jalen Harris: Bill Walsh Diversity Fellow (Offseason Program and Training Camp)
Jordan Young: Scouting training camp assistant
The Falcons released their first depth chart on Wednesday afternoon and there were a few surprises. Neither first-round pick is listed as a starter, and both will play against the Detroit Lions in Friday's preseason opener.

Michael Penix Jr. has a lot to prove with the Atlanta Falcons in 2025

Former Washington Huskies superstar quarterback Michael Penix Jr. is widely expected to be one of the NFL's biggest breakout stars ahead of his first full season at the helm with the Atlanta Falcons. However, a 50-person panel of general managers, executives, and coaches around the league believes that the rocket-armed lefty has a lot to prove. In a poll conducted by The Athletic, the panel ranked all 34 veteran quarterbacks who are expected to contribute to their teams in some capacity during the 2025 season, and placed Penix at No. 28. Of the six quarterbacks selected in the first round of the 2024 NFL draft, Penix came in fifth behind Jayden Daniels (No. 6), Bo Nix (tied for No. 20), Drake Maye (No. 22), and Caleb Williams (No. 23). He was only ahead of Minnesota Vikings signal caller JJ McCarthy (No. 29) who missed all of his rookie season with a torn meniscus in his knee. The ranking isn't surprising for Penix, who made just three starts during his rookie season. Although the Falcons went 1-2 in those games, the runner-up to Daniels for the 2023 Heisman Trophy proved that he offers immense upside to Atlanta's offense as he threw for 737 yards and 3 touchdowns and a rushing score as the Falcons scored 96 points over the final three weeks of the regular season. Heading into the 2025 season, Penix is determined to lead Atlanta to one of the NFL's best passing offenses and bring the Falcons back to the playoffs for the first time since 2017. "We should be the best in the league," Penix told reporter Will McFadden in late July. "With the guys we have around us, we've got a great offensive line as well. Those guys work extremely hard in the trenches with [offensive line coach Dwayne] Ledford out there leading those guys, doing a great job. With those guys, we should be unstoppable. That's our goal. We want to be No. 1 in all the categories on the offensive side of the ball."

Ex-Falcons running back signing with NFC South rivals

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are expected to sign former Atlanta Falcons running back Jase McCellan, according to a report from ESPN's Adam Schefter. McClellan, a standout at Alabama, was selected in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL draft by the Falcons. As a rookie, McClellan appeared in two games, rushing for 32 yards on 13 attempts. While he didn't get much playing time behind Bijan Robinson and Tyler Allgeier, McClellan showed some promise in the 2024 preseason. He led the Falcons with 55 rushing yards on 11 carries against the Baltimore Ravens. Atlanta released McClellan in June and signed former UFL star Jashaun Corbin as a replacement. In Friday's preseason opener, the Falcons running game was unable to find any room. Corbin made his team debut and rushed for just one yard on one carry. McClellan, 23, is a decent dual-threat option, showing some ability to catch the ball out of the backfield at Alabama. The Buccaneers have decent running back depth, so it'll be interesting to see if he makes the 53-man roster. Tampa Bay has been the class of the NFC South in recent years. If McClellan ends up doing well with the Buccaneers, he'll get to face his former team twice a year, starting in Week 1 of the 2025 NFL season. The Falcons signed veteran center Jake Hanson and safety Ronnie Harrison to their 90-man roster on Monday afternoon. Check out our latest 53-man roster projection for Atlanta as we head into preseason Week 2. This article originally appeared on Falcons Wire: Atlanta Falcons: Jase McClellan signing with Buccaneers

Monday Cheese Curds: Early injury roundup

We'll start this week's Curds off with a personal anecdote. I'm not much of a preseason spectator, but on Friday night I found myself with rare plop time, so I decided to pull out my phone and check in on that night's game between the Lions and the Falcons. What I was greeted with was an ambulance parked on the field, with the entirety of both teams taking a knee. That's the first action I saw in the 2025 NFL season. Thankfully, the injured Lion, Morice Norris, is back with the team as of today. Not to make light of a terrible situation, but I remember thinking at the time, 'ok, now football is back.' In keeping with that spirit of brutal reality, here's a rundown of some of the injuries that have cropped up for the Green Bay Packers as they make their way through the preseason and towards week one. We'll skip some obvious ones and bottom-of-the-roster guys, as well. WR Jayden Reed – As Justis Mosqueda wrote about on Saturday, the Packers' top wide receiver from last season is currently in a walking boot. S Zayne Anderson – I love to make jokes about the existence (or lack thereof) of Zayne Anderson just as much as the next person, but a knee injury for a guy who's proven himself a good special teams player and reliable depth piece is not ideal. WR Dontayvion Wicks – Wicks missed Saturday's preseason game. This was no surprise to those following closely, as he's been dealing with a calf issue for a couple weeks now. Apparently, breaks are just as hard to catch as footballs. RB MarShawn Lloyd – Speaking of catching breaks, Lloyd, who spent nearly all of 2024 dealing with injuries, now has a groin issue. The clock is ticking for Lloyd to make himself available and show his value. LB Quay Walker – In case you missed it, Walker recently had surgery on an ankle that did not heal properly after an injury last year. He's currently a full participant in team activities, but it's worth keeping in mind. CB Nate Hobbs – Speaking of surgery, new addition Nate Hobbs decided to have a cleanout procedure on his knee, leaving his week 1 availability up for debate. Said LaFleur at a recent presser, 'I'm not going to put a timetable on it (his return).' S Xavier McKinney – The star safety is dealing with a lingering calf injury and is a candidate to miss the remainder of training camp. Unfortunately, that puts a question mark on his week 1 availability as well. Other players nursing non-serious injuries include Rasheed Walker and Emanuel Wilson. Injuries strike blow at safety for Packers – The Green Bay Packers' depth at safety will be put to the test with Xavier McKinney and Zayne Anderson out with injuries. ICYMI: Packers vs Jets film review from Justis Mosqueda – You don't want to believe it, but the defense actually played pretty well on Saturday. Love's flat performance and other takeaways – Breaking down the uninspired performance by Jordan Love and the Packers' starting offense, and everything else you need to know about Saturday's preseason opener. Packers still haven't fixed glaring defensive issue – While some felt pretty good about Green Bay's defensive performance on Sunday, others see signs of continued bad habits. Photos: Historic flash floods hit Milwaukee – Record flooding rains fell in Wisconsin over the weekend, triggering dozens of water rescues, shutting down the Wisconsin State Fair and prompting Milwaukee County officials to declare a state of emergency.
