Canucks prospect Braeden Cootes making his case at Canadian world junior camp
Vancouver Canucks 2025 first-round draft pick Braeden Cootes is among the 20 forwards and 36 players overall slated to represent Hockey Canada in the World Junior Showcase, which runs today through Saturday in Minneapolis.

Cootes, 18, is a right-shot centre with the WHL's Seattle Thunderbirds, and Vancouver picked him at No. 15 a month ago in Los Angeles. Cootes signed his three-year, entry-level deal with the Canucks July 9, and he's expected to return this season to the Thunderbirds. He had 26 goals and 63 points in 60 regular season games with a young, rebuilding Seattle team last season. He was Seattle's captain as well.

There were 44 players invited to the camp this week, but eight forwards are listed as 'unable to attend' by Hockey Canada. The includes Kelowna Rockets centre Tij Iginla and Brandon Wheat Kings centre Roger McQueen, who both missed much of last season with injuries.

Canada's invited list features seven players from last year's world junior squad who were eligible to return. Cootes is among 22 players invited who previously won gold at the Under-18 worlds. There are eight 18-year-old forwards invited, including Cootes. The remaining 20 are 19 years old.

Longtime London Knights coach Dale Hunter is bench boss for this Canadian representative. The tournament is in Minneapolis and St. Paul and gets going Boxing Day.

Cootes has been lauded for his leadership and character. Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin said on draft day: 'They have a lot of great history of NHL players coming out of that program and Braeden being a captain, a leader of that team, that excited my staff.'

Canucks defence prospect Sawyer Mynio, who was a Cootes teammate with Seattle before being traded to the Calgary Hitmen last year, played for Canada at last year's world juniors in Ottawa. Canada lost 4-3 to Czechia in the quarterfinals.

COMMERCE CITY – The Colorado Rapids have loaned Canadian winger Kimani Stewart-Baynes to Lexington SC of the USL Championship for the remainder of the 2025 season. Colorado took Stewart-Baynes fourth overall in the MLS SuperDraft in December 2023. The 20-year-old from Toronto has made 16 MLS appearances for the Rapids first team. His four appearances this season have been all off the bench, totalling 28 minutes. He's made 18 appearances for Rapids 2 in MLS Next Pro play, with four goals in 12 appearances (742 minutes) this season. Stewart-Baynes, who has represented Canada at the under-20 level, was the Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 2023 at the University of Maryland, scoring three goals and adding seven assists in 14 games As part of the loan agreement, the Rapids can recall Stewart-Baynes at any time. 'This is a perfect fit for Kimani at this point in his career and we are excited to see him make the most of this opportunity,' Colorado sporting director Fran Taylor said in a statement. 'We see a lot of potential with Kimani, and we believe he will be able to work to unlock that over in the USL Championship with Lexington.' Unbeaten Canadian lightweight (Prince) Lucas Bahdi one win away from WBA title fight
Unbeaten Canadian (Prince) Lucas Bahdi will meet former world champion Roger (The Kid) Gutierrez in a 12-round WBA lightweight title elimination bout on Aug. 23 in Orlando, Fla. The winner will become the mandatory challenger for WBA 135-pound champion Gervonta (Tank) Davis. The contest at the Caribe Royale Resort is the first of Bahdi's newly signed multi-fight contract extension with Jake Paul's Most Valuable Promotions. Bahdi (19-0-0 with 15 knockouts) is currently ranked fifth among lightweight contenders by the WBA, sixth by the IBF, 12th by the WBC and 14th by the WBO. Gutierrez (29-6-1 with 22 knockouts) is ranked ninth by the WBA. The 30-year-old Venezuelan, who has won his last two fights after losing two straight, won the WBA super-featherweight title in 2021, losing his crown 19 months later. Bahdi made his pro debut in 2019, winning his first 11 fights by knockout. The 31-year-old from Niagara Falls, Ont., recorded unanimous decision wins over Mexico's Diego Fabian Eligio and Diego Andrade Chavez in 2022 before resuming his knockout streak.
