India Will Ink Trade Deals Only If They Are In Nation's Interest: Piyush Goyal
Addressing the media during an event organised by leading industry chamber Assocham here, the minister said if India gets a good trade deal, it will go ahead with it.
Goyal said that negotiations with the US are ongoing, adding that trade deals would materialise only if these are in the country's larger interests. "If it doesn't happen, we will not do it. India always puts the country's interest first," the minister asserted.
India and the US teams have concluded the fifth round of talks for the proposed bilateral trade agreement (BTA) in Washington this week. The negotiations were held for four days in Washington, DC. India's chief negotiator and special secretary in the Department of Commerce, Rajesh Agrawal, lead the team for negotiations.
He further stated that India has huge domestic demand. "We have imports coming into the country which can be replaced by developing domestic industry to scale for high-quality production," said the minister.
Addressing a gathering of industry leaders and entrepreneurs during the event, the minister emphasised the importance of mindset change in the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) sector.
He called for a shift towards collective growth and mutual cooperation between small and large companies.
"We need a change in goals, guidance and mindset. Big or small, companies have to grow together. We have to support each other and be vocal for local interests," he highlighted. He also emphasised the need for focus on research, innovation, quality and expansion by MSMEs to compete globally.
The minister urged MSME stakeholders to proactively inform the government about non-tariff barriers that are impacting their businesses. "Only when you inform us, we can take up these issues during bilateral discussions and work towards their resolution," Goyal told the industry leaders.
Dwelling on the macroeconomic framework, the minister compared the current banking system with the tenure of the previous UPA government. He said the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government has successfully restructured the banking sector.
"During the UPA regime, the banking sector was in shambles due to rising non-performing assets (NPAs). We have restructured it in a transparent manner. Today, the banking system is strong and performing well," said the minister.

During the ongoing monsoon session of Parliament, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, provided a written reply to a question raised by Eluru MP P. Mahesh Kumar regarding the measures taken by the Central government to prevent road accidents on the National Highway-16 stretch between Gannavaram and Nallajerla in Andhra Pradesh. The Union Minister clarified that the Centre was previously unaware of the fact that, on average, at least one road accident occurs daily on this stretch. He stated that an annual report titled 'Road Accidents in India' is prepared based on information collected from all States and Union Territories. According to a report by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), a total of 1,614 accidents and 254 deaths occurred on the Gannavaram–Nallajerla route over the last five years, the Minister revealed. He further stated that the highway stretch is being maintained by contractors and concessionaires in accordance with contractual agreements to ensure smooth traffic flow. In areas where land settlements have emerged, immediate corrective measures are being taken, he added. To prevent accidents, awareness campaigns involving signboards, speed breakers, and safety measures are being undertaken. The Union Minister also informed that the government continues to monitor road safety in coordination with district police and administrative authorities, prioritising the safety of travellers and implementing effective measures consistently.

Over 4.6 crore cases pending in lower courts, Centre tells Rajya Sabha
Over 4.6 crore cases are pending in various lower courts across India, the Union Minister of Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal told the Rajya Sabha on Thursday (July 31, 2025). There are 86,723 cases pending in the Supreme Court, while 63,29,222 cases are pending in various High Courts across India, the Minister said in a written reply to a question raised by Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam MP Kanimozhi N.V.N. Somu. The data on the pending cases was obtained from the National Judicial Data Grid, the Minister said. 'As per information received from the High Courts, 865 Fast Track Courts are functional across 21 States/Union Territories as on 30.06.2025,' Mr. Meghwal said in the Rajya Sabha. Fast Track Courts have disposed 76,57,175 cases till date, whereas 14,38,198 cases are currently pending with them. There are 488 Gram Nyayalayas or village courts notified across the States, of which 331 are operational. Gram Nyayalayas ensure speedy and easy access to the justice system in rural areas. The legislation for it was passed in Parliament in 2008. 'As per data available on the Gram Nyayalaya (GN) portal, 5,39,200 cases were registered in the GNs during the period from December, 2020 to June, 2025. During the same period, GNs disposed of 4,11,071 cases. As on 30.06.2025, the number of cases pending with GNs is 1,28,129,' the Law Minister stated.

No extension to Manoj Singh as SP Goyal takes over as chief secy
Lucknow: Shashi Prakash Goyal, the 1989 batch IAS officer who has been serving as the senior-most bureaucrat in the chief minister's office for the past eight years, was appointed as the new chief secretary of Uttar Pradesh. He replaced Manoj Kumar Singh, whose 14-month tenure ended with his retirement on Thursday. Goyal thanked Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for having given him the opportunity to serve the state from the highest post within the bureaucracy. "My priorities are the CM's priorities, which are zero tolerance towards crime, zero tolerance towards corruption, and industrial development," he said. "I will try to meet the standards set by the outgoing CS, and hope to maintain the speed with which he was implementing projects. All efforts will be made to develop UP into a USD 1 trillion economy. It will be ensured that all ongoing projects are completed within time frames. Concrete steps will be taken for industrialisation of the state," he said after taking charge. Goyal's appointment was announced on Thursday evening after a day of speculation around a letter seeking Singh's extension. Goyal is the seventh chief secretary in Yogi's over eight years of tenure as the chief minister. He was appointed as the principal secretary to the CM exactly two months after Yogi was sworn in for the first time on March 19, 2017. On June 18, 2020, he was promoted as the additional chief secretary to the CM, a post he was holding till Thursday along with heading civil aviation, estate and Protocol departments. He was also additional resident commissioner of UP in Delhi. In addition to being the CS, Goyal will also hold charge of Infrastructure and Industrial Development Commissioner, ACS Coordination, Chairperson PICUP, CEO UPEIDA and UPSHA, and project director, UP DASP. The estate and civil aviation departments have now been given to principal secretary to CM and home, Sanjay Prasad, a hint that a new ACS is unlikely to be posted in the CM office anytime soon. From October 2014 to May 2017, Goyal was joint secretary with the department of higher education under the Union ministry of Human Resources Development. Immediately after his return, he was posted as the principal secretary to CM. He had been approved for central deputation in 2024 and is due for retirement in Jan 2027. Interestingly, when Goyal was appointed as the principal secretary to the CM, he was seen as close to leaders in the BJP organisation. For the past eight years, however, Goyal has earned the trust of CM Yogi. The guessing game around who would be the next chief secretary or whether Singh would get an extension has been dominating the corridors of power for the past over one month. Such discussions have become a routine whenever top police or administrative officials are about to retire. However, going by the past experiences and keeping an eye on the appointment of previous six chief secretaries, rarely has the CM bypassed the seniority list. However, the same cannot be vouched for in the appointment of acting DGPs. When Yogi was sworn in as CM, Rahul Bhatnagar was the chief secretary. Bhatnagar was replaced by Rajive Kumar on June 29, 2017, the first major appointment by the Yogi Government. Kumar was followed by Anup Chandra Pandey on June 30, 2018. After Pandey, RK Tiwari was appointed as top administrative officer on August 31, 2019. However, like Bhatnagar, Tiwari's tenure was also cut short and was shifted to UPSRTC Chairman with DS Mishra replacing him after being given a one-year extension only a few days before he was to retire. Misra was replaced by Manoj Kumar Singh on June 30, 2024. Singh was believed to be close to CM Yogi Adityanath and hence it was speculated that he would get an extension. However, Goyal finally replaced Singh on Thursday.
