Philip Kingsley Elasticizer Therapies in Honey Nectar and Peach, from £24
Philip Kingsley's Elasticizer is a pretty renowned cult product in the beauty world already, but you may have missed that they recently released the iconic pre-shampoo treatment in a brand new honey nectar and peach scent, which smells even better than you might imagine. I would say that the fragrance leans slightly more into the honey side, but the peach is definitely still noticeable, and the final result is a delicious, warming, and sweet scent that lingers on your hair long after washing it out. And of course, the formula is just as brilliant as always. For the unacquainted, the Elasticizer is literally designed to put elasticity back into dry and dehydrated hair. It provides your tresses with nourishment and hydration that noticeably reduces frizz and tangles, as well as breakage. This product has been a staple in my weekly self-care routine for years now, and the new fragrance simply makes it all the sweeter — I genuinely can't recommend it enough!
Soap & Glory Face Your Clears Purifying T-zone Mask, £12.99
Soap & Glory's skincare has long been underrated in my opinion, and the brand recently released a whole bunch of new products that are both super affordable and super effective, with my favorite being the Face Your Clears purifying T-zone mask. This mask is enriched with niacinamide, which helps to eliminate sweat and oil to reduce overall shine while lifting out impurities and dead skin cells — and as somebody who struggles with an oily T-zone, I was really impressed by how deep into my pores Face Your Clears cleansed, with my skin feeling fresh and clear immediately after use. Other incredible new products from Soap & Glory include the Glow My Gosh Revitalizing Face Mask, Get Into The Smooth Hydrating Sorbet Cream, and Clean Come True Glow-Boosting Gel Cleanser — all of which are well worth checking out.
Baylis & Harding Goodness Oud, Cedar & Amber Natural Salt Scrub, £8
I am nothing if not a staunch fan of Baylis & Harding, with the brand always delivering when it comes to products that exude high-end luxury with high-street prices, and their new Oud, Cedar & Amber salt scrub is a prime example of this. Part of the brand's Goodness collection, this scrub literally smells like a spa day in a tub thanks to its woody and citrus notes that are enriched by lemon, patchouli, and sandalwood essential oils, and I love how the fragrance transforms my regular bathing routine into an aromatic indulgence. But in addition to smelling good, this scrub is also incredibly effective. Naturally-derived ingredients like sea salt and olive and apricot stones help to exfoliate your skin and buff away dead cells, leaving you smooth and glowing, while jojoba oil, shea butter, and organic coconut oil lock in moisture and ensure that the product is gentle and hydrating on your skin. In short, this one is a win all round.
ESPA Bergamot and Jasmine Bath and Shower Gel, £20
And speaking of a spa-like experience, this bergamot and jasmine bath and shower gel from ESPA is also infused with a selection of essential oils that both nourish and replenish your skin while making it smell incredible. I am obsessed with the zesty fragrance in this product, and the soap-free formula is incredibly gentle on your skin and doesn't strip away moisture in the same way that some harsher cleansers can. But don't worry, I haven't lost the plot, although it is soap-free, ESPA's shower gel is still effective at cleansing all of the grime and bad bacteria that we pick up throughout the day, which will leave you feeling clean, fresh, and nourished after every use.
Vaseline Gluta-Hya Flawless Tone Serum Burst Lotion, £12.99
Now, Vaseline might be one of the most established and respected skincare brands in the world, but after more than 150 years in the industry, I'm pleased to share that they are still coming out with innovative and incredible new products — like their first-ever concentrated serum body lotion that uses patented GlutaGlow technology. The Gluta-Hya Burst Lotion is available in three variants: Dewy Radiance, Flawless Tone, and Overnight Radiance. All three of these lotions are incredibly impressive; they are lightweight and fast-absorbing on your skin, smell good, and leave your body feeling soft and nourished. However, I am really here to shout about the Flawless Tone formula, which is supercharged with hyaluronic acid and glycerol to help balance out uneven skin tone — and has proven to be a total game-changer for me. For context, I used to struggle pretty badly with eczema as a child and teen, which has left small scars and marks all over my arms and legs. I've also had a burn scar on my right arm for several months after a particularly brutal baking tray accident, and after years of using bio oil and other lotions and potions that claim to even out your skin and reduce the appearance of dark marks and scars, I had lowkey given up hope on these ever fading any more than they already have. However, after just one week of applying the Vaseline Gluta-Hya Flawless Tone Serum daily, there has been a huge improvement to these blemishes — an improvement so noticeable that it has even been pointed out by other people. While I can't say that these marks have magically disappeared entirely and I now have baby-fresh skin, I can say that there has been a very significant improvement in a pretty short amount of time, and this alone has boosted my confidence when it comes to being bare-armed and bare-legged. Needless to say, I'm very excited to see what continued use of this product will do, and I couldn't be more grateful to Vaseline for helping me with an issue that I've been trying to overcome for literally years!
NUXE Huile Prodigieuse Roll-On, £26
Whenever I hear somebody's explanation for not using body oil, it normally comes down to the sensory issue of not wanting to get oil all over their hands in order to rub it into their skin, which is why NUXE's new roll-on version of their infamous Huile Prodigieuse formula is such a revelation. The product itself is, thankfully, exactly the same; a non-greasy, fast-absorbing and super-hydrating body oil that is enriched with seven botanical oils to nourish and soften your skin, with a beautiful orange blossom scent. In addition to locking in moisture, the oil adds a gorgeous sheen to your body, that will leave you glowing for the summer. But now, application has never been easier, with rolling the product all over your body revolutionary when it comes to speed and efficiency. It's worth noting that you will still need to rub the product into your skin, so it's not entirely hands-free, but you definitely get much less product on your hands than you would without the rollerball, and less product waste is always a bonus, too!
NIOD Copper Amino Isolate Lipid 1% Balm, £75
Trust me, I wouldn't recommend a product at this kind of price point if I wasn't genuinely amazed by it — and this face balm from NIOD has seriously blown me away. In fact, when I looked in the mirror after just two nights of applying this balm before bed and changing nothing else in my skincare routine, I actually said: 'Oh my god' out loud because of how smooth, radiant, and plump my skin looked in the morning. The real magic of this Copper Amino Isolate Serum is that it adapts to each person's skin to figure out their individual imbalances and remedy them, which means that what the product targets to improve overall complexion is different for each person. What is pretty consistent for everybody is that the formula contains tripeptide-1 copper and squalane, which promote collagen and elastin production and will improve your skin's barrier. While the specifics of the results will differ from person to person, it's pretty much a guarantee that you will notice a boost in youthful radiance and even skin tone.
FAB Skincare No.5 Bakuchiol Eye Revival Cream, £39
I am pretty fussy when it comes to eye creams as I have struggled with under-eye wrinkles and dark circles since I was a teenager, so I am often reluctant to stray away from the products that I know for a fact work. However, I was keen to test out this eye revival cream from FAB skincare because it uses bakuchiol, which is a more gentle alternative to retinol that boosts your skin's elasticity and collagen production. While I am a huge fan of the benefits of retinol, my skin sometimes struggles with the harshness of it, so bakuchiol sounded like a perfect solution.Needless to say, I was totally impressed by this product, which left my under eyes looking brighter, firmer, and more plump. In addition to bakuchiol, this lightweight eye cream contains niacinamide to even out skin tone, and caffeine to reduce the appearance of dark circles. While I was initially wary of straying away from my tried and tested favorites to test this product out, No.5 Bakuchiol Eye Revival Cream has now become one of my tried and tested favorites that I will definitely be repurchasing.
No7 Future Renew UV Defence Shield SPF 50, £24.95
I don't know if you have noticed, but it's been pretty bloomin' hot lately, which means that now, even more than ever, we need to be really prioritizing SPF and protecting our skin from the sun's harmful UV rays. One of the easiest ways to do this is by using skincare products that are formulated with sun protection, which mean even on the mornings when you don't think to apply sun cream, your face is still protected. This is where No7's Future Renew UV Defense Shield SPF 50 steps in, with the day cream formulated to protect your skin from sun damage as well as keeping it hydrated and looking good. I love this product because, despite being both a moisturizer and an SPF, it is surprisingly lightweight and incredibly fast absorbing, which means that you don't have to wait too long to continue with your routine. The UV Future Renew Defense Shield also works as a perfect base for makeup, while peptide technology actively works to rejuvenate your skin and simultaneously protect it from the sun. What more could you possibly ask for?
Fenty Skin Plush Puddin' Intensive Recovery Lip Mask, £20
Fenty Skin's Plush Puddin' Intensive Recovery Lip Mask is a new handbag essential of mine, as well as my go-to before applying any other lip products in my makeup look.In addition to hydrating your lips, this product reduces fine lines for smoother lipstick application, and also promotes a plumper look with a supple and glowing finish. Coconut and castor oil are used to lock in moisture, and pomegranate and jojoba oil complex help to build antioxidant protection against pollutants. As if that wasn't enough, this lip mask smells incredible (I have the cherry one, and I am obsessed!) and you can use it as an overnight moisturizing treatment as well as a day-to-day lip balm.
Wonderskin Wonder Blading Lip Stain Masque, £18
And once your lips are plumped and preened for the day, you might want to try out Wonderskin's Wonder Blading Lip Stain Masque, which is now available in Boots.I'm going to level with you, as somebody who looks incredibly washed out when their lips are their natural color, one of the biggest cosmetic banes of my life is my lipstick fading pretty much immediately after I have applied it — even the ones that vow to be long-lasting and smudge-free. Even the lip stains that I have tried before. So, it's perhaps understandable that I was a little dubious when I tried out this offering from Wonderskin, and I'm actually amazed to say that it really does give you color that lasts all day. It apparently works by infusing the top layer of your lips with pigments and dyes to lock the color in, and you only need to leave the product on your lips for 30 seconds for it to make an impact. However, the longer you leave it, the more vibrant the end result will be — meaning that you can choose between a soft tint and full-on color. It's also buildable, so if you aren't satisfied after your first application, you can repeat the process for a bolder finish.I tried this product out in the shade 'Romance,' and found that it gave my lips a natural-looking burst of color that lasts from my morning application until I go to bed at night, no matter how much I eat and drink. Talk about a game changer!
Sol de Janeiro Limited Edition Cheirosa 39 Perfume Mist, £24
And if you want to get yourself in the summer mood, then I can't recommend Sol de Janeiro's limited edition Cheirosa 39 perfume mist, which is exclusively available at LookFantastic. I'd say that this fragrance is a summery twist to the classic Vanilla Girl Aesthetic, with the soft and creamy scent of vanilla mixed with notes of coconut and tropical orchid, which immediately transports you to a sunny holiday destination. The base notes of sandalwood and toasted praline give Cheirosa 39 a unique woody edge that really breaks through the sweetness of the rest of the fragrance, and I'd say that its overall vibe is reminiscent of salt air, gelato, and piña coladas.
Loving Tan Bronze Shimmer Luminous Cream, £30.95
While we are on the summer vibe, I am obsessed with Loving Tan's Bronze Shimmer Luminous Cream, which is the perfect solution for people like me who love a golden glow but are too scared to self-tan. For reference, the two main reasons that I don't fake tan are because I generally don't like the smell of it, and I also hate the risk of the product transferring onto your clothes and bedsheets while it is marinating, which is why this luminous cream is so ideal. Not only does it not have that horrible biscuit smell, in fact, it's basically fragrance free, you get instant results, and your skin is dry in less than 60 seconds. It's worth noting that you can apply this Loving Tan product over your tan for a luminous finish, however, it also works just as well on its own to deepen your natural skin tone and seamlessly airbrush your body by enhancing, illuminating, and smoothing your skin. The subtle bronze shimmer delivers a healthy glow, and the formula is enriched with aloe vera, coffee, and pomegranate extracts to leave you feeling silky smooth and looking radiant.
ESPA's Optimal Skin Nutrients Mist, £26
This Optimal Skin Nutrients Mist from ESPA was another lifesaving product in the recent heatwave, with the hydrating and refreshing formula working to wake up your skin throughout the day.But it is so much more than just a mist, with this product also combining the benefits of a toner and serum, which means that it can be included as part of your skincare routine as well as applied over makeup for a mid-day pick-me-up. Ingredients include pearl algae, which purifies, tightens, and refines pores, turmeric to even skin tone and boost your skin's radiance, radish and avocado oils to nourish and hydrate the skin, as well as a combination of vitamins that protect and support your skin's moisture barrier. As if that wasn't enough, it is also packed full of essential oils like sweet orange, grapefruit, and juniper, which give it an incredibly uplifting scent. I honestly can't get enough of this product, and am obsessed with the healthy, dewy glow that it gives me in just one spritz.
This Works In Transit No Traces 80 Pads, £20
I have also been away from home a lot more than usual in recent weeks, and these In Transit No Traces make-up remover pads from This Works have come in incredibly handy when I don't want to pack up my cleansers, flannel, and wrist wash bands. These pads come ready-to-use, infused with rosewater, mint, and balancing botanical oils to both remove makeup and cleanse your skin while being gentle to it. I was most surprised by how easily these pads removed stubborn makeup products like eyeliner and mascara, considering how lightweight the cleanser felt on my face. In addition to their cleansing properties, the pads contain natural amino acids, which help to illuminate and purify your skin.As somebody who normally has a pretty regimented cleansing routine at the end of each day, I was really impressed by the efficiency of these pads, and they're definitely going to be something that I make sure I always have to hand in the future.
Plenaire Violet Paste Overnight Blemish Solution, £20
Another game-changing product that I have discovered this month is Plenaire's Violet Paste Overnight Blemish Solution, which is actually inspired by a 70-year-old French beauty recipe, which seems pretty timely considering how viral French pharmacies are going on TikTok at the moment. The general gist of this product is that you apply the paste to any blemishes before bed, and overnight it will draw out excess oil to reduce the size of the spot, as well as calm inflammation and redness. It also creates a protective barrier over the blemish while you sleep, which is integral when it comes to getting rid of spots because — as we know — they thrive with bacteria. I'm fortunate enough to not really suffer with my skin too much, however, in the summer, I do find that I get more spots than usual due to sweating more, and I was very grateful to have this paste on standby. The paste dried really quickly on my skin, and I was absolutely thrilled to see that it didn't transfer onto my pillow as I slept. Most importantly, it also did the job, with my spots dramatically reduced by morning every single time I used this product.
Aromatherapy Associates Heritage Collection, £75
Finally, there are a couple of sets that were released in June that I think really deserve your attention, starting strong with Aromatherapy Associates' Heritage Collection, which is worth £197 but available to buy for just £75.I've made no secret of how much I love Aromatherapy Associates over the months, and I truly believe that all of their products elevate your day-to-day living to luxury and indulgence, and this set brings together four of their most iconic products to create the ultimate aromatherapy experience. My personal favorite product in the set is the Deep Relax Sleep Mist, which I love because it is a rare sleep product that does not include lavender — a smell that I can't say I'm a big fan of. Instead, this mist expertly combines vetivert, camomile, and sandalwood for a blissfully relaxing scent that you can spritz over your bedding and pajamas to help you calm down and drift off to sleep. But while the sleep mist is my hero product, I am just as obsessed with the other three items in this collection: the De-Stress Muscle Gel can be used to recover sore muscles or even your feet after a long day, the De-Stress Mind Bath & Shower Oil turns your bath or shower into a spa-worthy experience with notes of frankincense, petitgrain, and camomile, and the Revive Body Oil is formulated with an invigorating blend of grapefruit, juniper berry, and rosemary to leave you feeling energized while nourishing and deeply moisturizing your skin.If I'm being entirely transparent, to me, £75 is an absolute bargain for these four full-sized products, and the set would make the perfect gift for a loved one this summer, or a treat for yourself!
LookFantastic's KIKO Milano Edit, £35
If makeup is more your thing, then LookFantastic's beach-inspired KIKO Milano limited edition box is probably the one for you, with seven full-size products that you'd normally pay more than £90 for available for just £35.This edit basically contains a complete makeup look for you to try out this summer, starting with the KIKO Milano Hydra Pro Glow, which is an incredibly lightweight moisturizing cream that locks in hydration while giving your skin a subtle glow. It also contains SPF 10, and smells incredible thanks to Italian rose extract. The Silky Glow Baked Bronzer in Warm Sienna is one of my two personal favorites in the box, with this bronzer the perfect sunkissed shade to add warmth and dimension to your face. It also blends like silk, and has an attention-grabbing, luminous finish. My other personal favorite product is the 3D Hydra Lipgloss in shade 17. This gloss is a subtle pink shade that has been formulated to suit any skin tone, and I am obsessed with its sparkly pearlescent finish that instantly glams up any makeup look. In addition, the gloss contains hydrating ingredients that leave your lips feeling nourished and soft while wearing it. The box also contains, in no particular order: KIKO Milano's Unlimited Blush in shade 10, which is a buildable product that can be used for either a subtle touch of pink or bright burst of color, Lip Volume in TuTu Rose, which is both a lip plumping volumizer and hydrating oil that will leave your lips feeling nourished, KIKO Milano's Long Lasting Eye Shadow Stick in Golden Beige, a super versatile metallic color that is easy to blend thanks to its creamy formula, and KIKO Milano's Creamy Colour Comfort Lip Liner, which is waterproof and transfer-resistant.Did I mention that all of this costs just £35? Because that's a steal!
Boots Minis Bag Get Holiday Ready, £32
But if you would prefer a little bit of everything, then I am seriously impressed by Boots' Get Holiday Ready Minis Bag, which is worth £124.50 but costs just £32. Now, this set really does have a great mix of all kinds of products, including fragrances, makeup, and skincare. I am personally obsessed with the Rituals' Ritual of Karma Shimmering Body Oil, which adds a subtle golden sparkle to your skin that looks incredible over a tan in the summer. The Floral Street Sunflower Pop perfume is also my favorite Floral Street fragrance so far, thanks to its zesty, fruity notes of bergamot, mandarin, passion fruit, plum blossom, honey accord, crisp amber, and Bellini accord. Just trust me when I say that this is a summer scent that will guarantee you compliments every time you leave the house! All of the products in this set are travel-friendly beauty heroes that are perfect for the warmer months, making it an ideal choice for your holiday toiletries. In addition to the perfume and body oil, you will find a lip and cheek stain from Milk, MAC's Stack Elevated Mascara Mini, Bobbi Brown's Vitamin Enriched Face Base, which is a cult product in itself, Laneige's super hydrating Water Bank Blue Hyaluronic Cream Moisturiser, and Cheirosa 62 from Sol De Janeiro, which has notes of pistachio, salted caramel and vanilla. As if that wasn't enough, the products come in a super cute reusable zip pouch, which can also be used for your trip away!

For reference, the two main reasons that I don't fake tan are because I generally don't like the smell of it, and I also hate the risk of the product transferring onto your clothes and bedsheets while it is marinating, which is why this luminous cream is so only does it not have that horrible biscuit smell, in fact, it's basically fragrance free, you get instant results, and your skin is dry in less than 60 worth noting that you can apply this Loving Tan product over your tan for a luminous finish, however, it also works just as well on its own to deepen your natural skin tone and seamlessly airbrush your body by enhancing, illuminating, and smoothing your skin. The subtle bronze shimmer delivers a healthy glow, and the formula is enriched with aloe vera, coffee, and pomegranate extracts to leave you feeling silky smooth and looking radiant. ESPA's Optimal Skin Nutrients Mist, £26 This Optimal Skin Nutrients Mist from ESPA was another lifesaving product in the recent heatwave, with the hydrating and refreshing formula working to wake up your skin throughout the it is so much more than just a mist, with this product also combining the benefits of a toner and serum, which means that it can be included as part of your skincare routine as well as applied over makeup for a mid-day pick-me-up. This Works In Transit No Traces 80 Pads, £20 I have also been away from home a lot more than usual in recent weeks, and these In Transit No Traces make-up remover pads from This Works have come in incredibly handy when I don't want to pack up my cleansers, flannel, and wrist wash bands. In addition to their cleansing properties, the pads contain natural amino acids, which help to illuminate and purify your somebody who normally has a pretty regimented cleansing routine at the end of each day, I was really impressed by the efficiency of these pads, and they're definitely going to be something that I make sure I always have to hand in the future. Plenaire Violet Paste Overnight Blemish Solution, £20 Another game-changing product that I have discovered this month is Plenaire's Violet Paste Overnight Blemish Solution, which is actually inspired by a 70-year-old French beauty recipe, which seems pretty timely considering how viral French pharmacies are going on TikTok at the moment. The paste dried really quickly on my skin, and I was absolutely thrilled to see that it didn't transfer onto my pillow as I importantly, it also did the job, with my spots dramatically reduced by morning every single time I used this product. Aromatherapy Associates Heritage Collection, £75 Finally, there are a couple of sets that were released in June that I think really deserve your attention, starting strong with Aromatherapy Associates' Heritage Collection, which is worth £197 but available to buy for just £75.I've made no secret of how much I love Aromatherapy Associates over the months, and I truly believe that all of their products elevate your day-to-day living to luxury and indulgence, and this set brings together four of their most iconic products to create the ultimate aromatherapy experience. But while the sleep mist is my hero product, I am just as obsessed with the other three items in this collection: the De-Stress Muscle Gel can be used to recover sore muscles or even your feet after a long day, the De-Stress Mind Bath & Shower Oil turns your bath or shower into a spa-worthy experience with notes of frankincense, petitgrain, and camomile, and the Revive Body Oil is formulated with an invigorating blend of grapefruit, juniper berry, and rosemary to leave you feeling energized while nourishing and deeply moisturizing your I'm being entirely transparent, to me, £75 is an absolute bargain for these four full-sized products, and the set would make the perfect gift for a loved one this summer, or a treat for yourself! LookFantastic's KIKO Milano Edit, £35 If makeup is more your thing, then LookFantastic's beach-inspired KIKO Milano limited edition box is probably the one for you, with seven full-size products that you'd normally pay more than £90 for available for just £ edit basically contains a complete makeup look for you to try out this summer, starting with the KIKO Milano Hydra Pro Glow, which is an incredibly lightweight moisturizing cream that locks in hydration while giving your skin a subtle glow. The box also contains, in no particular order: KIKO Milano's Unlimited Blush in shade 10, which is a buildable product that can be used for either a subtle touch of pink or bright burst of color, Lip Volume in TuTu Rose, which is both a lip plumping volumizer and hydrating oil that will leave your lips feeling nourished, KIKO Milano's Long Lasting Eye Shadow Stick in Golden Beige, a super versatile metallic color that is easy to blend thanks to its creamy formula, and KIKO Milano's Creamy Colour Comfort Lip Liner, which is waterproof and I mention that all of this costs just £35? Because that's a steal! Boots Minis Bag Get Holiday Ready, £32 But if you would prefer a little bit of everything, then I am seriously impressed by Boots' Get Holiday Ready Minis Bag, which is worth £124.50 but costs just £32. In addition to the perfume and body oil, you will find a lip and cheek stain from Milk, MAC's Stack Elevated Mascara Mini, Bobbi Brown's Vitamin Enriched Face Base, which is a cult product in itself, Laneige's super hydrating Water Bank Blue Hyaluronic Cream Moisturiser, and Cheirosa 62 from Sol De Janeiro, which has notes of pistachio, salted caramel and if that wasn't enough, the products come in a super cute reusable zip pouch, which can also be used for your trip away!

Stunning amber fossil reveals ‘Last of Us'-type fungus likely lived alongside dinosaurs

A glob of 99 million-year-old amber has preserved an ancient fly in horror show fashion: with the mushroom-like fruiting body of zombie fungus bursting forth from its head. The insect, along with a second specimen of a young ant infected with a similar fungus, are two of the oldest examples of a bizarre natural phenomenon that involves fungal parasites hijacking the bodies of their hosts before ultimately killing them. 'Amber gives us this opportunity to visualize the ancient ecological relationships preserved in fossils,' said Yuhui Zhuang, a doctoral student at the Institute of Paleontology at Yunnan University in southwestern China. 'Overall, these two fossils are very rare, at least among the tens of thousands of amber specimens we've seen, and only a few have preserved the symbiotic relationship between fungi and insects,' added Zhuang, the lead author of a study on the fossils published June 11 in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences. Zhuang and his colleagues named two previously unknown species of ancient fungi of the genus Ophiocordyceps from their research on the amber, which involved using optical microscopes to study the tiny pieces of amber and micro-computed tomography to make 3D images of the fungi-infected insects. They found the first, named Paleoophiocordyceps gerontoformicae, on the ant and the second, Paleoophiocordyceps ironomyiae, on the fly. Some Ophiocordyceps species that prey on ant species today are known as 'zombie-ant fungi' because the fungal parasite can manipulate the behavior of its hosts for its own benefit. The phenomenon inspired the video game behind the HBO TV show 'The Last of Us.' HBO shares a parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery, with CNN. 'The discovery of these two fossils suggests that terrestrial ecosystems were already very complex, and that Ophiocordyceps, in particular, may have begun to act as 'predators' of insects in the Cretaceous period, regulating the populations of certain groups,' Zhuang said via email. Today, parasitic fungi, also known as entomopathogenic fungi, infect a wide range of insect groups, including ants, flies, spiders, cicadas and beetles, according to London's Natural History Museum. In the case of carpenter ants, the spore of the Ophiocordyceps fungus lands on the head of an ant, enters its brain through a weak area in the insect's exoskeleton and takes control of the ant to facilitate its spread, said Conrad Labandeira, senior scientist and curator of fossil arthropods at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC, who wasn't involved in the study. Paleoophiocordyceps likely zombified its hosts in similar ways, according to Labandeira. 'It appears that ants, for some reason, were targeted early for zombification, and currently are the major recipients of this parasitoid fungus,' Labandeira said. He added that flies are only rarely affected by these parasitic fungi today, making a fossilized example particularly interesting. The species of fungus that infected the prehistoric ant may be an ancestor of zombie-ant fungi, and thus likely controlled its host's body in similar ways, said study coauthor João Araújo, mycology curator and assistant professor at the Danish Natural History Museum. Very few specimens of ancient parasitic fungi have been discovered, so little is known about their evolution. The two insects were likely killed by the fungi before getting trapped in the sticky tree resin that ultimately forms amber, said Araújo, noting that most entomopathogenic fungi kill their hosts to produce the fruiting body. This lost parasite diversity had a significant role in shaping the planet we live on today, said Phil Barden, an associate professor at New Jersey Institute of Technology's department of biological sciences, who has worked on amber fossils. 'Even as we find a remarkable diversity of organisms entombed in amber, it's important to remember that we really do only capture the smallest glimpse. For any given fossil ant or beetle, we can imagine all of the parasites, fungus, and bacteria that such insects support,' Barden, who wasn't involved in the new study, said via email. It was 'fascinating to see some of the strangeness of the natural world that we see today was also present at the height of the age of the dinosaurs,' said study coauthor Edmund Jarzembowski, a professor and associate scientist at London's Natural History Museum. The fossil is the latest to emerge from Myanmar's rich amber fields. While amber fossils have been some of paleontology's most exciting finds in recent years, ethical concerns about the provenance of amber from the civil war-torn region have emerged. Zhuang said the fossils were sourced from Myanmar's amber markets. The study noted that the specimens were acquired before 2017 and, to the authors' knowledge, were not involved in armed conflict or ethnic strife.

The internet has a wild obsession with Sydney Sweeney's body. So she got in on the joke.

What's more shocking: That an A-list celebrity made soap with her bathwater, or that the soap is now re-selling for thousands of dollars online? The internet is divided over a recent marketing gimmick involving Sydney Sweeney, who, in collaboration with the men's personal care company Dr. Squatch, authorized the creation and sale of bars of soap containing, among other things, her bathwater. Yes, this is real. In fact, the actress told E! News at the "Echo Valley" premiere earlier this month it was actually her idea. "I think that's it's more fun to see everybody else talk about it," Sweeney said, when asked for her reaction to the soap. Dr. Squatch made 5,000 bars of the soap − dubbed Sydney's Bathwater Bliss − and sold them online for $8 each. They quickly sold out, and now those bars are getting re-sold for much, much more on eBay. Some are priced as high as $1,600. The soap clearly has its fans, but not everyone's amused by it. "Sad day for humanity," one person wrote on Instagram. "Everyone who bought this is an absolute vile form of human," wrote another. Sweeney clearly wanted to get people talking with her soap, and she's obviously succeeded. But could she also be making a point that her critics are missing? Sweeney has been open before about society's rampant sexualization of her and the challenges this has brought to her life. By selling soap made with her bathwater, could she be calling attention to a deeper issue? "Our culture polices women's sexuality, profits off it at the same time and shames them for profiting from it themselves − especially when it comes to young, beautiful, talented stars like Sydney Sweeney," Shira Tarrant, a women's, gender and sexuality studies professor and the author of "The Pornography Industry: What Everyone Needs to Know." In short: Sweeney's soap is a statement in more ways than one, intentional or not. Sweeney said she got the idea for the soap after seeing the internet's reaction to an advertisement she did with Dr. Squatch last year. That ad, which showed a nearly nude Sweeney sitting in a bathtub, got over 1.7 million likes on Instagram, along with plenty of comments inquiring about how to buy the actress' bathwater from the commercial shoot. What health & wellness means for you: Sign up for USA TODAY's Keeping It Together newsletter Sweeney said she and Dr. Squatch decided to give the people what they want. 'When your fans start asking for your bathwater, you can either ignore it, or turn it into a bar of Dr. Squatch soap,' the actress said in a press release. It seems that, no matter what she does, Sweeney can't escape scrutiny over her body. More recently, the actress stirred buzz for gaining 30 pounds to play boxer Christy Martin in an upcoming biopic. Some have noted that Sweeney's soap stunt seems especially odd, given what the actress has said before about being objectified. Sweeney opened up about the scrutiny surrounding her body last year in an interview with Variety. "I see it, and I just can't allow myself to have a reaction," she told the outlet. "I don't know how to explain it — I'm still trying to figure it out myself. People feel connected and free to be able to speak about me in whatever way they want, because they believe that I've signed my life away. That I'm not on a human level anymore, because I'm an actor. That these characters are for everybody else, but then me as Sydney is not for me anymore. It's this weird relationship that people have with me that I have no control or say over." More: Sydney Sweeney promotes her own bathwater in new soap collab. The internet has thoughts. It's not just Sweeney who's come under fire recently either. Last week, Sabrina Carpenter received similar backlash when she unveiled the cover of her upcoming album 'Man's Best Friend.' The cover shows the pop star on her knees as a man off-camera holds her by the hair. Some defended the cover, while others called it degrading. "It's always so funny to me when people complain. They're like, 'All she does is sing about this.' But those are the songs that you've made popular," Carpenter told Rolling Stone about the controversy. "Clearly you love sex. You're obsessed with it." According to gender and sexuality experts, there are many ways to interpret Sweeney's intentions. On the one hand, it's possible she's acquiescing to society's mistreatment of her. If this is the case, it's something that, unfortunately, many women can relate to, says Leora Tanenbaum, author of the book "Sexy Selfie Nation: Standing Up for Yourself in Today's Toxic, Sexist Culture." "I heard the narrative so many times of 'I may as well monetize my sexuality because everyone else is already exploiting and objectifying me'," Tanenbaum says. On the other hand, it's also possible that Sweeney may be leaning into parody and satire in order to call out this objectification. Unless she states her intentions, we can't know for sure. "Sydney Sweeney just found a brilliant way to literally package her own reputation — and sell it," Tarrant says. "Is this simply a money-making publicity stunt or a provocative statement about larger issues? The answer is both." Perhaps the bigger question isn't what Sweeney is trying to say with her soap, but rather what her soap says about us. Tanenbaum says the soap's popularity raises more questions about the people buying it than it does about Sweeney. Degrading or empowering? Why people can't stop talking about Bianca Censori's naked dress. The conversation around Sweeney's soap presents an opportunity for reflection. What does sexual empowerment really look like? There's nothing wrong with wanting to feel sexy − but it's important to know where this desire is coming from and why. "I don't believe it's a good idea to engage in sexual behavior just to fulfill a script that's handed to you, or to prove a point to other people," Tanenbaum says. "When you take ownership over your sexuality to meet the expectations of other people, you actually lose your autonomy because it's about other people, not you."
