Wildcats try out for NFL on Northwestern Pro Day
Northwestern football held its Pro Day Tuesday, and Head Coach David Braun was on hand for the occasion.
Ryan Hilinski and former Lincoln-Way East star A.J. Henning were among the 10 seniro and graduate student Wildcats trying to catch the eye of a dozen-plus NFL scouts at Ryan Fieldhouse.
Whether they get drafted or sign as free agents, pro 'Cat hopefuls like defensive lineman Jaylen Pate are out to prove they can make the jump to the NFL.
"I think it did for me what I needed it to as far as, you know, getting my foot in the door and getting me the chance. I know once I get there and the real football starts again, you know, I'll handle what I need to and take care of business."
Hilinski was pleased with the day.
"I felt great out there today," he said. "It felt like we trained. We prepared. I was trained with Coco [Azema], Ben [Wrather], and Jaylen [Pate], and those guys came in and put in the work day in and day out. We just wanted to leave with no regrets."
Henning said he was satisfied with his own performance and excited to cheer on his teammates.
"It was exciting, you know, rooting for your guys who you took the field with. For me, two years, and seeing them chasing, pursuing their dreams and playing at the next level altogether, I mean, it was great," he said. "This is the first time I've really gotten to get eyes on me and work out in this kind of type of setting, so I feel like I laid it all on the line today."
Xander Mueller said he was trying to top expectations.
"I was focused on everything. I just wanted to show that I could move in space and move better than a lot of them would think I could move, so I did that today in all the drills," he said.
Azema, Wrather, Thomas Gordon, Marshall Lang, Sean McLaughlin, and R.J. Pearson also took part in Pro Day.

Shemar Stewart, Bengals' first-round draft pick, leaves minicamp over unsigned contract: Source
Cincinnati Bengals first-round pick Shemar Stewart left the team's mandatory minicamp while he remains unsigned to his rookie contract, a league source said. Stewart departed camp so he wouldn't distract his teammates while negotiating his contract, according to the source. Cincinnati drafted the defensive end with the 17th pick out of Texas A&M in April. Stewart did not hold back when asked Tuesday about being unsigned. Advertisement 'I'm 100 percent right,' Stewart said.'I'm not asking for nothing y'all have never done before. But in y'all case, y'all just want to win an argument instead of winning more games.' He also said that his teammates supported his stance, with some telling him, 'You're doing the right things.' Stewart is one of four first-round draftees who have yet to sign their rookie contracts. The Jacksonville Jaguars' No. 2 pick Travis Hunter, the Denver Broncos' No. 20 pick Jahdae Barron and the Buffalo Bills' No. 30 pick Maxwell Hairston remain unsigned. Earlier this week, the Philadelphia Eagles' Jihaad Campbell (No. 31 pick) was among that group, but the team announced he signed his contract Wednesday. The duration and dollar amounts of NFL rookie contracts are fixed and based on the player's draft position. The Bengals are dealing with another contract saga at minicamp with star edge rusher Trey Hendrickson not in attendance amid a contract extension standoff. His absence continues a contentious offseason while he waits to potentially reach a new deal. Hendrickson is in the final year of a contract extension he signed in 2023, with one year and $16 million remaining and a cap hit of $18.3 million. ESPN was first to report on Stewart leaving the Bengals' minicamp. Adam Schefter was ‘essentially banned' from Pat McAfee's ESPN show — until now
You'd be hard pressed to find an NFL insider with more scoops than Adam Schefter, but that hasn't mattered for Pat McAfee and his show. According to The Athletic's Andrew Marchand, Schefter was 'essentially banned' from 'The Pat McAfee Show' back in March after the insider failed to make an appearance on the show at McAfee's request. The apparent dispute arose at the start of NFL free agency when McAfee wanted Schefter to come on the show, but the latter was busy with a free agency special that was airing on ESPN2. 3 Pat McAfee's self-titled show has been an ESPN staple for the past several years. AP 3 Adam Schefter is one of the NFL's top insiders. AP Schefter hasn't been seen on the former All-Pro punter's show since, and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport has instead made numerous appearances, including one as the guest host. But the apparent squabble seems to have reached its end, as Marchand reported that Schefter is expected to appear on Thursday's 'Pat McAfee Show,' where viewers could find out furtther details of Schefter possibly having been 'banished' from the show for the past several months. ESPN president of content Burke Magnus didn't seem too concerned about the rumored feud as he spoke on McAfee's successes and relationship with the rest of the network. 'Pat and his show are thriving on ESPN,' the statement reads, per Marchand. 'We are very pleased with the partnership.' 3 Adam Schefter making an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show in January. Pat McAfee Show/X Magnus also downplayed the idea that McAfee banned Schefter. 'In the nearly three years since Pat has brought his show to our platforms, we've continuously seen those out there that are seemingly obsessed with wanting to see Pat fail on ESPN,' he said. 'This rumor is just the latest example of that. Pat and his show continue to break the mold and reach new audiences, and we look forward to the continued success together.'

Drake Maye talks about comfortability in New England's offense ahead of second NFL season
Drake Maye talks about comfortability in New England's offense ahead of second NFL season Will Drake Maye take a "Sophomore Leap" in his second NFL season? During his two seasons as the North Carolina Tar Heels' starting quarterback, Drake Maye showcased why he'd be an NFL star for years to come. Maye burst onto the scene in 2022, earning ACC Player and Rookie of the Year Honors. When Maye's UNC career ended, he amassed 8,018 passing yards and 63 passing touchdowns, while also running for over 1,200 yards and 16 touchdowns. The New England Patriots, in desperate need of a franchise quarterback since Brady's retirement, chose Maye with the third overall pick of 2024's NFL Draft. While New England struggled to its third-consecutive losing season last year, Maye showed glimpses of being "the guy." On Monday afternoon, after one of the Patriots' final spring practices, Maye spoke to the media about his comfortability – in his team's offense – entering the fall. "I think we're catching the stride; I think I'm starting to find a stride," Maye told ESPN's Mike Reiss. "I'm bummed out we're about to leave (for the summer), but it's fun. I feel like I've done a good job of trying to keep the football in our hands, and that's one of our key focuses. It's good for us to install plays, get a feel for what I like. Coach (Josh) McDaniels has been awesome about asking what I like and what he expects from me on certain plays. So it's been good to be able to get that outside and on the field." Maye ended his rookie NFL season with 2,276 passing yards, 15 touchdown and 10 interceptions, plus 421 rushing yards and two additional scores. Your first chance to see Maye in a New England uniform this coming season comes August 8, when the Washington Commanders come to Gillette Stadium for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff, as part of NFL preseason action.
