2 scenic Wisconsin escapes land among the 'best weekend getaways' in the country

Yahoo27-03-2025

Condé Nast Traveler has assembled what it considers to be the "best weekend getaways in the U.S." and a pair of picturesque escapes in Wisconsin.
The piece was constructed by taking five major U.S. cities and picking out four weekend treks from that city. With Chicago listed as one of the hubs, a pair of eastern Wisconsin locales are in the mix.
The first is Lakeshore State Park, right in Milwaukee. It's home to 22 acres of scenic trails and vistas on Lake Michigan. Plus, you're in Milwaukee, so you can grab an absurdly large Bloody Mary while you're at it.
"Whether you're itching to go on a scenic walk through the Oak Leaf state trail, or you're more of an angler chasing the thrill of the catch, consider this not-too-far escape from the city," Condé Nast Traveler writes.
Its second pick for a weekend getaway is a familiar one: Door County.
Wisconsin's thumb offers cherries, grassy roofs, and beaches. "Come to Door County to amble around its galleries, or hike around the 14 miles of trails quilting its eastern tip in Whitefish Dunes," suggests Conde Nast Traveler.
While Milwaukee and Door County are a bit of a jog from Minnesota compared to Chicago, they're still a nice reprieve from daily routines, no matter how long you're planning to stay.

These Wisconsin lakes named some of the best vacation spots in the US

As temperatures begin to rise, going swimming in a lake might be one of the best ways to cool off. Wisconsin has over 15,000 lakes, including three that were recognized as among the best lake vacation spots in the nation by Travel + Leisure magazine. Lake Superior (No. 1), Lake Winnebago (No. 8) and Lake Michigan (No. 12) made the list of the top 25 locations. Here's more about what Travel + Leisure said: Travel + Leisure notes that Lake Winnebago is perfect for Wisconsin windsurfers in the summer: "Steady wind and easy launch make Winnebago the lake of choice for Wisconsin windsurfers and kite surfers — especially in summer, when the shallow, sandy bottom creates water temperatures that are downright tropical (75 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit). In winter, the lake converts to a natural rink for sail-powered ice racing." While Lake Michigan runs through three states, the experiences in each state can differ. "The pastoral shores of Wisconsin's Door Peninsula offer totally different sun-and-sand experiences on the same lake," Travel + Leisure said. Last year, Lake Michigan and Milwaukee were also recognized in a New York Times article about great but not-so-obvious beaches to visit. Like Lake Michigan, Lake Superior runs through several states. As the largest Great Lake, it's vast enough that it could easily hold the water from all of the other Great Lakes. "There's plenty of room for fish to thrive: salmon, trout, walleye, smelt, whitefish, herring, northern pike, smallmouth bass and many other game species can be caught in abundance in along the lake's tristate shores," Travel + Leisure said. Bayfield was named as one of the "charter hubs" for fishing. The Apostle Islands, located along the shores of Lake Superior, were also named one of the 50 Most Beautiful Places in America by Conde Nast Traveler. Lake Superior: Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin Walden Pond: Massachusetts Lake Havasu: Arizona Lady Bird Lake: Texas Lake Chelan: Washington Lake Champlain: New York and Vermont Crater Lake: Oregon Lake Winnebago: Wisconsin Lake Kabetogama: Minnesota Lake Clark: Alaska Lake Tahoe: California and Nevada Lake Michigan: Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana and Illinois Finger Lakes: New York Lake Powell: Utah and Arizona Moosehead Lake: Maine Yellowstone Lake: Wyoming Table Rock Lake: Missouri Caddo Lake: Texas, Louisiana Lake Charles: Louisiana Lake Washington; Washington Flathead Lake: Montana Lake Oconee: Georgia Lake Erie: Ohio Lake Coeur d'Alene: Idaho Lake of the Ozarks: Missouri This article originally appeared on Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: Lake Superior, Lake Winnebago, Lake Michigan in best lake vacations

Bring Scott Clark's Pre-Surf Fire Cider To The Beach This Weekend

Scott Clark knows a little about being on the coast. His restaurant, Dad's Luncheonette, is a train caboose parked on the Pacific Coast Highway in Half Moon Bay. This casual destination, which serves simple but thoughtfully prepared sandwiches, bowls of soup, and slices and pie, overlooks the Pacific Ocean. 'That's the water I'm in every day of my life, fishing and kayaking, foraging and surfing,' Clark writes in his recent cookbook Coastal: 130 Recipes from a California Road Trip. It is a decidedly different life than the one he was leading as chef de cuisine of Saison in San Francisco, a restaurant with three Michelin stars and ranked 27 on the list of the World's 50 Best Restaurants while he was there. The grueling workload of fine dining doesn't leave much time for surfing in the Pacific Ocean or, as the name of his train caboose restaurant suggests, being a parent. The recipes in Coastal illustrate Clark's decision to leave behind fine dining in 2017 and embrace a more casual lifestyle with his family, without forgetting the knowledge and skills that made him a great chef. (MORE: Kick Off The First Days Of Summer With A Tomato Sandwich) This recipe, which Clark calls 'Pre-Surf Fire Cider' shows both sides of his personality. It's the perfect companion to an early-morning beach trip, when you need a sip of something to warm you up and get you ready to dive into the cold waters of the Pacific Ocean. It's also a sophisticated, cheffy spin on the health-conscious fire cider trend, which leans on insights from folk medicine to boost the immune system. 'This is a digestive, immune-boosting ripper. I go nuts for it. I chug a hefty pour before surfing because it gets me loose,' Clark writes. 'You can also slam it into cold water, pour it over ice, make a tea with it, whisk it into salad dressing, or if you're feeling real frisky, blend it into a Bloody Mary. But beware: It's not the easy sipper you're looking for; it's a shot of nature's high-octane fuel.' Pre-Surf Fire Cider Ingredients 2 cups unfiltered raw apple cider vinegar ½ cup unpeeled, chopped fresh ginger ½ cup peeled, chopped fresh horseradish root ½ cup garlic cloves, peeled and smashed ¼ cup peeled, chopped turmeric 3 Tbsp honey, plus more as needed 2 serrano chiles, halved lengthwise Peel of 1 lemon, preferably Meyer, pith removed Peel of 1 navel orange, pith removed Peel of 1 grapefruit, pith removed ½ tsp black peppercorns ½ tsp pink peppercorns ¼ tsp fine salt, such as Maldon Instructions In a large mason jar, combine all the ingredients. Use a wooden spoon to push the solids down to submerge them in the vinegar. Crank a lid on the jar, give it a good shake, and store it somewhere dark and cool for 4 weeks. Pour the cider through a fine-mesh strainer lined with cheesecloth into a clean mason jar. Discard the solids. Taste the cider and add more honey, as needed, 1 teaspoon at a time, until it's perfect for you. The cider keeps, in the fridge, for a few months. Mount Etna Eruption in Sicily: What Travelers Should Know

Mount Etna tours have resumed following the Sicilian volcano's eruption on Monday, June 2, that sent hikers fleeing from its large plumes of smoke and ash. The scene, while dramatic, is not an unusual occurrence for the Italian island, and no injuries or fatalities have been reported. The June 2 eruption was the largest in four years, but posed no danger to visitors or the local population, according to officials. 'As every Sicilian knows, since the dawn of time, Mount Etna does erupt few times a year, resulting mainly in ashfall,' Condé Nast Traveler travel specialist Marcello Giancoli, who specializes in planning trips to Italy, says. 'This means that the volcano activity is a regular part of local life, that, with safety measures in place, is a natural hazard as well as a wonderful attraction to experience.' If you have an upcoming trip planned to Sicily, here's everything you need to know about the recent eruption. Monday's eruption lasted several hours and produced lava fountains, bursts of gas, and ash clouds visible across much of eastern Sicily, according to the Italian Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology. This was the volcano's fourteenth eruption since mid-March. Volcanic activity at Mount Etna is 'predominantly effusive, characterized mainly by the emission of lava flows that do not impact surrounding populations,' Ernesto Fucci, a trip designer for Sicily and Puglia at Butterfield&Robinson, tells Condé Nast Traveler. 'Eruptions characterized by lava flows, which are harmless, are frequent and occur at regular periods, and also represent a remarkable attraction." 'There is no major impact on a day-to-day life in the surrounding cities, but when explosive activity happens there could be inconvenience due to ash accumulation,' he adds. An aviation warning was put in place at Catania Airport on Monday, the Associated Press reported, but the airport did not close and flights were not significantly disrupted. In the past, ash from the volcano has occasionally shut down flights to Sicily for several hours or days. 'The alert level has soon dropped to yellow and will drop to normal in the coming days,' Fucci says." There has been a slight impact on flights to and from Catania airport, but it lasted only a few hours, and the situation is completely back to normal now." Scientists have developed automatic alert tools that predict Mount Etna's eruptions 'hours to days in advance by monitoring gas emissions, earthquakes, and ground changes,' Giancoli says. As of Wednesday, June 4, the Italian government has the alert level for Mount Etna listed as 'yellow,' which means signs of volcanic activity are slightly above normal ('orange' means there are significant signs of an imminent eruption, and 'red' indicates an ongoing eruption). 'Etna's volcanic activity is highly monitored by Civil Protection Department and the Italian Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology,' Fucci says. 'The latter is the most important authority on the matter, and it constantly issues information and updates regarding the volcanic activities.' Mount Etna, whose stunning peak rises 11,014 feet tall and slopes toward the Ionian Sea, is a popular attraction for both hikers and tourists. Video footage obtained by CNN shows a tour group running downhill away from the explosion on June 2; Italian officials have confirmed that all hikers were evacuated safely. Hikers have since returned to the volcano's slopes following the eruption, but officials are advising tourists to check for warnings before venturing towards the summit, Reuters reports. Trekkers are required to be accompanied by an authorized guide in order to hike Mount Etna above 2500m (8202 feet). 'There are many activities that can be organized, always in safety, on Mt. Etna, from helicopter tours to guided jeep excursions, from mountain biking to very immersive hiking in the company of experienced volcanologists,' says Fucci, who notes there are also several winery visits and tastings offered in the area. This is a developing news story and will be updated with information as it becomes available.
