These Wisconsin lakes named some of the best vacation spots in the US
As temperatures begin to rise, going swimming in a lake might be one of the best ways to cool off. Wisconsin has over 15,000 lakes, including three that were recognized as among the best lake vacation spots in the nation by Travel + Leisure magazine. Lake Superior (No. 1), Lake Winnebago (No. 8) and Lake Michigan (No. 12) made the list of the top 25 locations. Here's more about what Travel + Leisure said: Travel + Leisure notes that Lake Winnebago is perfect for Wisconsin windsurfers in the summer: "Steady wind and easy launch make Winnebago the lake of choice for Wisconsin windsurfers and kite surfers — especially in summer, when the shallow, sandy bottom creates water temperatures that are downright tropical (75 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit). In winter, the lake converts to a natural rink for sail-powered ice racing." While Lake Michigan runs through three states, the experiences in each state can differ. "The pastoral shores of Wisconsin's Door Peninsula offer totally different sun-and-sand experiences on the same lake," Travel + Leisure said. Last year, Lake Michigan and Milwaukee were also recognized in a New York Times article about great but not-so-obvious beaches to visit. Like Lake Michigan, Lake Superior runs through several states. As the largest Great Lake, it's vast enough that it could easily hold the water from all of the other Great Lakes. "There's plenty of room for fish to thrive: salmon, trout, walleye, smelt, whitefish, herring, northern pike, smallmouth bass and many other game species can be caught in abundance in along the lake's tristate shores," Travel + Leisure said. Bayfield was named as one of the "charter hubs" for fishing. The Apostle Islands, located along the shores of Lake Superior, were also named one of the 50 Most Beautiful Places in America by Conde Nast Traveler. Lake Superior: Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin Walden Pond: Massachusetts Lake Havasu: Arizona Lady Bird Lake: Texas Lake Chelan: Washington Lake Champlain: New York and Vermont Crater Lake: Oregon Lake Winnebago: Wisconsin Lake Kabetogama: Minnesota Lake Clark: Alaska Lake Tahoe: California and Nevada Lake Michigan: Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana and Illinois Finger Lakes: New York Lake Powell: Utah and Arizona Moosehead Lake: Maine Yellowstone Lake: Wyoming Table Rock Lake: Missouri Caddo Lake: Texas, Louisiana Lake Charles: Louisiana Lake Washington; Washington Flathead Lake: Montana Lake Oconee: Georgia Lake Erie: Ohio Lake Coeur d'Alene: Idaho Lake of the Ozarks: Missouri This article originally appeared on Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: Lake Superior, Lake Winnebago, Lake Michigan in best lake vacations

Four new NY hotels named among world's best by Esquire. See the list
Four new New York hotels have been named some of the best in the world in 2025, according to Esquire. Esquire editors and contributors compiled the list by visiting the places themselves, handpicking 23 U.S. spots, including one hotel in the Catskills, two in the heart of New York City and one in the Hamptons. "Great hotels don't just cater to your daily needs. They're oases of comfort in foreign lands and gateways to dazzling new cultures," the magazine said. "The very best hotels won't just make your vacation. They can change the way you see the world." Here's which new hotels in the Empire State made the list and why. Food was a major highlight for the Esquire reviewer of this Greene County hotel tucked within the Catskill Mountains as breakfast at The Henson consists of homemade pop tarts and local butter and a meal or two at the establishment's restaurant, Matilda, is a must, according to the review. "There is really no need to venture into the outside world once you're in the Henson's cocoon," according to Esquire. "Grab a cocktail and your book, kick your shoes off and park yourself on the couch, just like you would in your own living room." Man reveals toll of living on cruise ships for 25 years
A man named Mario Salcedo who has lived on cruise ships for the past 25 years revealed a bizarre health effect that he's developed from being at sea for so long. 'I've lost my land legs. I'm swaying so much I can't walk in a straight line,' the Cuban-born businessman told Conde Nast Traveler in a recent interview. 'I'm so used to being on ships that it feels more comfortable to me than being on land,' he added. Salcedo, who is nicknamed 'Super Mario' in cruise circles, recently did his 1000th voyage with Royal Caribbean. The 11-night voyage was on the 3286-passenger Explorer of the Sea which left Miami on January 5 and traveled to Panama and the southern Caribbean. MORE: Couple sell home to live on 15-year cruise Salcedo said he spends around $101,000 on cruises per year and only works about five hours a day, devoting the rest of his time to relaxing and having fun on the ship. Slacedo is ahead of his time when it comes to living at sea, having arguable helped start the trend that is seeing more and more retirees sell their homes and cars for life on a ship. Elaine Warren, the founder and CEO of The Family Cruise Companion, spoke to the Daily Mail about Salcedo losing his 'land legs' — a condition known as Mal de débarquement syndrome. 'Spending extended time on a cruise ship sounds like a dream for many families. The convenience, entertainment, and all-inclusive nature of the experience make it an attractive idea,' said Warren. MORE: True cost of living on a cruise ship revealed 'But when you shift from a vacation mindset to actually living at sea, a lot of unexpected things happen — especially to your body. 'I've spent years helping families plan cruise vacations, and while short-term trips are one thing, staying on board long-term is a different experience entirely. 'The first adjustment is to constant motion. The body adapts to the ship's movement over time, but that doesn't always mean in a good way.' Warren went on, 'many long-term cruisers find that they develop 'sea legs,' where they get so used to the ship's slight sway that walking on land feels strange. I've spoken to people who lived at sea for months, and they say that stepping back onto solid ground can be disorienting — almost like the land itself is moving.' According to the Cleveland Clinic, Mal de débarquement syndrome (MdDS) is a rare vestibular disorder that makes you feel like you're moving even when you're not. MdDS symptoms go away within 24 hours, but in some cases, they can linger for months or even years. Salcedo previously told Conde Naste Traveler that he went on his first cruise in 1997 and fell in love with life at sea. 'Nothing could lure me away from them, because I get treated like royalty,' he said about his journeys with Royal Caribbean. 'The captains all know me.'

2 scenic Wisconsin escapes land among the 'best weekend getaways' in the country
Condé Nast Traveler has assembled what it considers to be the "best weekend getaways in the U.S." and a pair of picturesque escapes in Wisconsin. The piece was constructed by taking five major U.S. cities and picking out four weekend treks from that city. With Chicago listed as one of the hubs, a pair of eastern Wisconsin locales are in the mix. The first is Lakeshore State Park, right in Milwaukee. It's home to 22 acres of scenic trails and vistas on Lake Michigan. Plus, you're in Milwaukee, so you can grab an absurdly large Bloody Mary while you're at it. "Whether you're itching to go on a scenic walk through the Oak Leaf state trail, or you're more of an angler chasing the thrill of the catch, consider this not-too-far escape from the city," Condé Nast Traveler writes. Its second pick for a weekend getaway is a familiar one: Door County. Wisconsin's thumb offers cherries, grassy roofs, and beaches. "Come to Door County to amble around its galleries, or hike around the 14 miles of trails quilting its eastern tip in Whitefish Dunes," suggests Conde Nast Traveler. While Milwaukee and Door County are a bit of a jog from Minnesota compared to Chicago, they're still a nice reprieve from daily routines, no matter how long you're planning to stay.
