Port Lincoln locals react to shock discovery of human skull in Tamika Chesser case

News.com.au3 days ago
Port Lincoln locals Katie and her friend were walking up Slipway Rd on Thursday afternoon.
Just moments earlier, police had announced they had discovered a human skull in the walking trails and scrubland between Slipway Rd and Hindmarsh Rd on the eastern edge of the popular fishing town.
The discovery marked another grisly twist in the Tamika Chesser case, which has sent shockwaves through the small and close-knit Eyre Peninsula community.
'I'm relieved for the family, it's a bit of closure for them,' Katie said.
'But I feel devastated for the person that found it.'
Tyson McCallum was also walking in the area when his dog Benji the Beaglier found what police believe is a human head.
'I just went in a bit closer and kind of made the connection pretty quickly as to what I thought it was,' he told 9News.
'(It was) pretty surreal to be honest,' he added.
'I was kind of like 'No way, it's not what I think it is, surely not'. But it was too coincidental.'
Ms Chesser, a former Beauty and the Geek contestant, is accused of murdering her boyfriend Julian Story at the pair's Port Lincoln unit around midnight on June 17.
Police allege she also dismembered Mr Story's body, removing his head.
Ms Chesser was then allegedly captured on CCTV in the hours afterwards walking with a bag, dogs and dressed in heavy clothing.
She was arrested on June 19 and charged with murder and destroy human remains.
South Australian Police and SES volunteers fanned out across the town to search for Mr Story's missing remains in the days and weeks following the alleged murder, but the search was suspended last week.
But in a shock development, police announced on Thursday afternoon they believed they had found Mr Story's head.
A resident walking their dog found the skull and reported it to the authorities, police said.
'Preliminary investigations and phone calls to forensic science centre (indicate) the remains are most likely human, and I believe they are the remains of Julian Story,' Detective Superintendent Darren Fielke said.
'To confirm this, those remains will be subject to further testing over the coming days.
Mr Story's family have been contacted and updated on next steps, the Superintendent said.
Katie's friend, who did not wish to be named, said she was no longer worried she would 'stumble across it'.
Katie said the discovery would likely reignite interest among locals in the case, which has gripped the town over the past few weeks.
'It's going to go mental,' Katie said.
Ms Chesser's case has generated widespread interest because of her glamorous former life and the brutal nature of the alleged killing.
Greg, who has lived in Port Lincoln since the 1970s, said locals discussed the case regularly.
'It was a gruesome bloody incident,' he said, speaking before Thursday's discovery.
'This town, we've never had anything like that before.'
Harley Hozer, who lives across the road from the unit complex where Ms Chesser and Mr Story lived, said the allegations had 'shook the town'.
'It shook the town a little bit,' she told NewsWire.
'We've dealt with some crime before but nothing like this.
'It shocked me, that's for sure.'
Police cars and cops patrolled the entry points to the scrubland across Thursday, with police line closing off the area.
Detectives could be seen walking into the trails.
That same day, Ms Chesser appeared at Port Lincoln Magistrates Court at 9.30am on three separate matters.
Police allege she behaved in a disorderly manner at a tobacco store on Port Lincoln's Liverpool St and at the Port Lincoln Police station, both on February 14, 2025,
It is further alleged she assaulted a woman on November 1 last year.
It is listed as a summary offence, meaning it is considered a low level of offending.
She is also alleged to have assaulted a police officer on June 20 this year, one day after she was arrested for the alleged killing of Mr Story.
The 34-year-old woman appeared via AVL from James Nash House, a psychiatric facility, where she greeted the magistrate and answered questions for the first time in court.
She sported a shaved head and wore a blue sweater and greeted Magistrate Patrick Hill with a 'hello'.
Justin Slater, a solicitor with the Aboriginal Legal Rights Movement, represented her in court.
He told Mr Hill he had ordered 'reports' into the charges.
'We are doing our own reports in relation to these matters,' he said.
He asked Mr Hill to adjourn matters until a charge determination had been made for Ms Chesser's more serious allegations and Mr Hill agreed to the request, setting December 18 at Port Lincoln for the next hearing.
When asked if she understood her hearing would be adjourned, Ms Chesser replied: 'Yep'.
Mr Slater declined to comment on the charges or Ms Chesser's condition after the hearing.
Thursday's hearing marked the second time Ms Chesser had fronted court following her first appearance at Adelaide Magistrates Court last month on the murder and destroy human remains charges.
Those matters are listed to be heard in Adelaide on December 12.
Mr Story was a Port Lincoln local, while Ms Chesser had only recently moved to the area from Queensland.
She starred in the second series of the hit reality TV show Beauty and the Geek in 2010, finishing in second place.
She has also worked as a model for a range of brands including Target and appeared in men's magazines including Ralph and FHM, a profile for her on Star Now states.
Her Instagram and Facebook social media profiles are filled with racy and glamorous images.
A funeral service for Mr Story is expected next week.

Man accused of murdering underworld figure Bilal Hamze allegedly owed $270k for alleged killing

A man accused of killing an underworld figure and conspiring to murder his brother was allegedly owed more than $200,000 for the jobs and 'bragged' about how well he'd driven a stolen getaway car away from the murder scene, a court has heard. Samuel Rokomaqisa, 35, is standing trial accused of the alleged murder of Bilal Hamze and conspiring to murder Bilal's brother, Ibrahem. He's also accused of the aggravated assault of an elderly man. The prosecution delivered their opening submissions on Monday afternoon, where Crown prosecutor Kate Ratcliffe alleged Mr Rokomaqisa was involved in an enterprise with others to murder Ibrahem Hamze 'as an act of retaliation' by the Alameddine family — an organised criminal network — over a three-week period between July and August in 2021. He was also allegedly in the car in which 10 shots were fired at Bilal Hamze in June 2021. The court was told how Bilal had been dining at the Kid Kyoto restaurant in the heart of Sydney's CBD with a sex worker on the evening of June 17, 2021. A black Audi with imitation plates was spotted circling the area, with Bilal and the sex worker passing by the car after they left the restaurant. A total of 10 shots were fired at Bilal after the pair walked behind the car, with CCTV to show he and the sex worker 'running for their lives', Crown prosecutor Kate Ratcliffe told the court. Dashcam footage from a taxi, shown to the court, appeared to capture a pistol hanging out the front passenger side of the Audi as the events unfolded. '(The sex worker) screamed for help, she called an ambulance … but she soon hung up, being too distressed to talk,' Ms Ratcliffe told the court. Bilal later died in hospital, while the stolen car was found burned out in Northwood. Mr Rokomisqa has entered not guilty pleas to all charges and has denied any involvement in the crimes and to having any links with the Alameddine family. 'That was me, that is what we do': Alleged crim's bragging Mr Rokomaqisa allegedly showed a man, who can only be known as Witness A, news footage of Bilal's murder in the aftermath. 'Witness A will tell you … that when (Mr Rokomaqisa) showed him this news footage … he said to Witness A 'That was me, that is what we do with the cars',' Ms Ratcliffe said. 'Witness A, I anticipate, will also tell you that the accused … because of what he had done for the Alameddine family, he was accepted by them.' Ms Ratcliffe argued the words 'that was me' related to Mr Rokomisqa's alleged involvement in Bilal's murder, while the reference to cars related to the use of cars in criminal offences including murder. The court was told the stolen car was allegedly apart of a criminal scheme across Sydney to affix cars with imitation plates, move the vehicles around between garages, and burn them out when they're done using them. Mr Rokomisqa had also allegedly played a news clip about Bilal's murder to another witness, telling him he was the driver. 'Witness C recalled the accused bragged about being a good driver and how he got away,' Ms Ratcliffe said. ' … The accused said to him he was on a payroll and was paid to be the driver of hits.' Mr Rokomisqa was allegedly heard saying he was linked to 'the shooting and s**t' after a TV segment about the news in prison, and that he was in there together with 'all the Alameddine boys', Ms Ratcliffe told the court. '(I'm) f**king set here lad, they full transferred all the boys…all the Alameddine boys, we're all here together,' Mr Rokomisqa allegedly said while in prison. He also allegedly said he was 'the king now' while in jail, and that he'd been asked whether he was the one 'who knocked Bilal Hamze'. 'Unexplained wealth' Mr Rokomisqa's 'unexplained wealth' is also set to be probed during the trial, with bank records to show unexplained transactions over the relevant period. 'The accused was not earning money through legitimate avenues, and any unexplained wealth was (related to) his involvement in criminal activities on behalf of the Alameddine organised crime network,' Ms Ratcliffe told the court. He had allegedly told his former partner he was owed some $270,000 for the alleged crimes. 'The accused sent her a message (in September) … saying I'm owed $70,000 from just four weeks back, plus another $200,000 for the other thing,' Ms Ratcliffe said. Ms Ratcliffe submitted the 'thing' referred to Bilal Hamze's murder, while the $70,000 was to do with acts relating to the conspiracy to murder his brother Ibrahem. The following day, Mr Rokomisqa was allegedly heard saying 'Bro didn't I prove something to everyone with that job in the city?', which the Crown argued was in reference to Bilal's murder. He had also allegedly told Witness B he was waiting for 'just some c*** to come out' when she asked why he 'kept disappearing' around August 2021. 'The Crown case is that this was a reference to the surveillance of Ibrahem Hamze's unit block, and them waiting in the various cars during their surveillance for Ibrahem Hamze to come out so they could complete the agreement to kill him,' Ms Ratcliffe told the court. Finally, Mr Rokomisqa is accused of using a gun to threaten an elderly man into giving he and another his car after they got a flat tire during a police chase on August 14, 2021. He had allegedly been surveilling Ibrahem Hamze's home before a police chase was launched, later telling his former partner he 'had copped a chase and that they had to dump a car that they had stolen from an old person'. Clareese is a Court Reporter at NewsWire. Lachlan Young: Hannah McGuire's killer allegedly intimidated witnesses

A young man who murdered his ex-girlfriend before burning her body is facing allegations of witness intimidation, charge sheets reveal. Lachlan Young appeared in the Ballarat Magistrates' Court on Monday morning for a brief administrative hearing on three counts of witness intimidation and three counts of witness harassment. He has not entered pleas on these charges. The new allegations were laid in October last year but can now be made public after his guilty plea over Hannah McGuire's murder. Lachlan Young pleaded guilty to murder mid-trial. Picture: Instagram The 23-year-old faced trial last month over the murder of Ms McGuire, a teacher's aide, in April last year. During the trial, jurors heard Young killed the 23-year-old at the home they once shared before driving her body to nearby bushland where he torched the vehicle. The killer then sent a fake suicide text from Ms McGuire's phone to her mother in an effort to cover up the murder. Young had pleaded not guilty, instead offering to admit to manslaughter, before abruptly changing his plea to guilty eight days into the trial on July 18. The case has now been set down for a three-day plea hearing to begin on October 27 in Ballarat. Hannah McGuire was found dead in bushland near Scarsdale. Picture: Facebook Young has remained in custody since his arrest in the days after Ms McGuire's body was discovered on April 5, 2024. Details of the alleged intimidation and harassment have not been aired in open court. But according to charge sheets, police allege Young wrote and sent letters containing menaces on or around July 23, 2024 knowing that person was taking part in a criminal proceeding as a witness. In court, defence lawyer Ryan Robertson requested the allegations be adjourned until early next year – after Young is sentenced for Ms McGuire's murder. Mr Robertson noted no summary had been read in court on the allegations and no plea had been entered. He unsuccessfully argued against the media's request for access to Young's charge sheets, submitting that it was 'somewhat premature'. Ms McGuire's family released a statement after the guilty plea, saying 'no other result would have been fitting'. Picture: NewsWire / Andrew Henshaw But magistrate Mike Wardell disagreed, noting there was public interest in reporting the allegations now that Young's murder case had been resolved. Young will next appear in the Ballarat Magistrates' Court on January 29 next year. After Young's plea, Ms McGuire's family shared a message online, writing: 'No other result would have been fitting. All for you Hannah, my sweet girl.' Liam Beatty Journalist Liam Beatty is a court reporter with NCA NewsWire. He has previously worked in newsrooms in Victoria and Western Australia. Liam Beatty
