Who is Kashish Chaudhary? 1st Hindu woman assistant commissioner in Balochistan

Hindustan Times14-05-2025

At just 25 years of age, Kashish Chaudhary became the first woman from the minority community of Pakistani Hindus in Balochistan to be appointed as the Assistant Commissioner in the restive province.
Chaudhary, a native of Chagai district's Noshki town, made history by achieving this feat. She cleared the Balochistan Public Service Commission (BPSC) examination, which is both a personal milestone and a symbol of hope for the nation's minority communities.
Speaking to SAMAA news, Chaudhary said that it took three years of consistent studies, at least eight hours a day devoted to preparation, which led her to achieve this success. "Discipline, hard work, and the desire to contribute to society have driven me throughout this journey," she added.
Kashish Chaudhary's father, Girdhari Lal, expressed his sense of pride over his daughter to the media. Lal, a mid-level trader, said, "It is a matter of great pride for me that my daughter has become an assistant commissioner due to her hard work and commitment."
He further added that Chaudhary always dreamt of studying and doing something for women.
Chaudhary and her father met Balochistan chief minister Sarfaraz Bugti in Quetta on Monday. She told the CM that she would work toward the empowerment of women and minorities, while also looking at the province's overall development.
CM Bugti also said it was a matter of pride for the nation when minority community members get to key positions due to their hard work and effort. "Kashish is a symbol of pride for the nation and Balochistan," he added.
Kashish Chaudhary has managed to make her mark and is being counted among the other women from the Hindu community who achieved notable success in male-dominated fields in Pakistan, news agency PTI reported. These women have fought and overcome many cultural, religious and social hurdles to get to such significant positions.
Manesh Ropeta, in 2022, became the first Hindu woman to be appointed as the Superintendent of Police in Karachi, where she is still posted.
A 35-year-old Pushpa Kumari Kohli is serving as a sub-inspector in Karachi and exuded confidence that Hindu women hold the tenacity and intelligence to reach the top.
'I also passed the Sindh police Public Services Examination. There are many more Hindu girls out there waiting to educate themselves and become something,' Kohli, who belongs to a scheduled caste, was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.
Suman Pawan Bodani, a native of Sindh province's Shahdadkot, was first appointed as a civil judge in her hometown in 2019.
Meanwhile, Ramesh Kumar Vankwani, a politician in Sindh, said he believes that young Hindu girls, with the backing of their families, have shown more leaning and initiative toward being educated and pursuing higher studies.
'Our young women are doing us proud. We have doctors, civil servants, police officers, etc in Sindh,' he said.

Tension at Durgadi Fort as rival Shiv Sena factions clash during Id-ul-Azha prayers

Tensions escalated in Maharashtra's Thane district on Saturday (June 7, 2025) after members of both the Eknath Shinde-led and Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray-led factions of the Shiv Sena attempted to reach Durgadi Fort while Id-ul-Azha prayers were being offered at its foothill. According to police officials, protestors from both factions tried to ascend to the Durga temple atop the hill during the course of the Id-ul-Azha prayers being held at the base, resulting in chaos in the area. Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC were in effect, and several protestors were subsequently detained for violating the restrictions. Leaders from both sides, including Shinde faction functionary Ravi Patil and Uddhav faction leader Vijay Salvi, led rallies demanding that 'Durgadi Fort should be freed'. Their convoys converged at Shivaji Chowk, near the Durgadi temple, where slogans were raised by supporters of both groups. 'Police took measures to prevent protestors from both factions from reaching the fort. The protestors attempted to breach the barricades, triggering scuffles and a standoff with the police. We detained several members in preventive custody so that it does not escalate,' Deputy Commissioner of Police Atul Zende said. Durgadi Fort has long been at the centre of a communal dispute regarding the control of a mosque located within its premises. Access to the Durga temple is typically restricted during Id-ul-Azha to facilitate prayers at the foothill. Members of the Shiv Sena have criticised the arrangement, alleging discrimination against Hindu devotees and calling for equal access to the site. The Idgah located at the fort has been under litigation since 1976, when the Majlish-e-Mushavreen Majjid Trust filed a suit seeking control. In 2024, the court ruled in favour of the State government.

Vice-President Dhankhar calls on corporates to share profits with farm sector

Bengaluru, Jun 7 (PTI) Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Saturday stressed the critical role played by the farm sector in the nation's growth trajectory and called on corporates to share their profits with them. Interacting with industry leaders and entrepreneurs here, he said, 'Time has come for corporates to share their profits with the farm sector. Your investment in research or farmland is not charity — it is a gainful investment." He also urged the political parties in the country to bring down the political temperature and said, 'The dialogue between political parties cannot be a confrontation–the dialogue has to be soothing. Democracy is defined, friends, by dialogue and discourse." According to him, India is a thriving federal society where there has to be sync between the Centre and the States. Dialogue between leaders and political parties is vital–absence of dialogue will not be good for our national mindset. 'Issues of national security, issues connected with our nationalism, and issues connected to our development must be viewed from a national prism, not a partisan one. I do not doubt the political sagacity of people across the spectrum–they are available in all political parties," he was quoted as saying in a statement issued by Vice President Secretariat. Invoking the Vedantic principle of freedom of expression, the Vice-President stated, 'Democratic values–cannot be described without freedom of expression and debate. If someone attacks, frustrates or regulates your right to expression, then there is a deficiency in democracy." He noted that people in industry, unlike politics, are satisfied by balance sheets. 'But greenfield projects are not emerging at the pace they should. Please think, converge in clusters to ensure equitable employment and growth," Dhankhar said.
