East Las Vegas valley salon scrambling to get funds to replace stolen AC

Yahoo02-03-2025

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Employees of an east Las Vegas valley hair salon say they are on the brink of closing after their air conditioning was stolen and are scrambling to get funds together as they can't afford a new one.
As patrons entered the Fiesta Hair Salon they were met with ceiling fans swirling around. Normally, staff would adjust the thermostat but for the past couple of months, their AC unit has been busted. Owner Margaret Smith said it was the work of at least one thief.
'I called somebody out and they said that the air unit was stolen,' Smith said.
Now, she needs it replaced. Property management explained that Smith's lease agreement makes it her responsibility to pay for the replacement. She said her insurance won't cover it.
The salon is trying to raise thousands of dollars to pay for an AC unit.
It costs $22 for a haircut at Fiesta Hair Salon and $18 for seniors. A majority of the salon's clientele comes in on Saturdays.
Customers have been coming to Fiesta Hair Salon for around 20 years, however, with the Las Vegas heat approaching and the threat of shutting down, they fear they'll need to find somewhere else to go.
'They don't want me to close. They want me to find a solution,' Smith said. 'Asking for help, that's the only thing that's left now.'
She's created a GoFundMe, with signs notifying customers about it when they walk in. Some clients threw in some extra money with their haircuts. She's hoping to get the money soon, before the summer heat forces closure.
'Unless we can find something at Home Depot that will keep it cool, It'll probably be in 30 to 60 days,' she said.
Smith said her air conditioning was also stolen four years ago, and her insurance covered its replacement.

Home Depot holding opening ceremony Wednesday at South Hill store

Jun. 10—Officials from Home Depot will host a grand opening Wednesday at the hardware giant's new store on the South Hill. The 134,000-square foot store was built following the demolition of the 100,000-square-foot Shopko building at 4515 S. Regal St. The new store is located directly across the street from Ruggiero's Ace Hardware, owned by Austin and Josh Ruggiero, the third generation of the family to own the business. To commemorate the opening of Home Depot, company officials will host a community night celebration that starts at 4:30 on Wednesday. It will feature remarks from Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown, City Council President Betsy Wilkerson and Alisha Benson, CEO of Greater Spokane Incorporated. Following the event, the store will open for business at 6 a.m. on Thursday. Home Depot purchased the 13-acre property in May for $10 million, according to county property records. Building plans submitted to the city show about 28,000 square feet of the new building will include a garden center, and another 100,000 square feet will consist of retail space. A lumber canopy also is slated for the location. The store could eventually employ 175 workers, according to the project description submitted to the city. Josh Ruggiero said last year that his hardware store could suffer from the new Home Depot. "I fear we will no longer exist if this Home Depot goes in across the street," he said. But two weeks ago, the Ruggieros announced plans to highlight the differences that their store offers customers. The plan to hold a neighborhood party on Saturday at the Ace Hardware store at 44th and Regal which will include in-store promotions and family activities. "While this change presents challenges for our family-owned business, we are embracing the moment with optimism and a renewed commitment to our neighbors," Ruggiero said in a news release.

Jim Cramer on Home Depot (HD): 'I Think We're in Good Shape'

We recently published a list of . In this article, we are going to take a look at where The Home Depot, Inc. (NYSE:HD) stands against other stocks that Jim Cramer discusses. A caller asked how Cramer thinks The Home Depot, Inc. (NYSE:HD) would perform in the long term. He replied: 'Oh man, I was making calls on Home Depot today because it's starting to roll, and then wouldn't you know it, it pulled back right at the end. I think we're in good shape. I think when rates just stay stable, we'll be fine. I think that the gardening season's coming along fine, but let me just say, people just look at housing starts and they say, let's sell Home Depot. Don't be constrained by that. I think they're going to have a great year. Let's think seven years, not seven days. Thank you, Larry Fink for that. I love that. It was in the FT yesterday.' Home Depot (NYSE:HD) is a retailer specializing in home improvement products, including building materials, home décor, and garden supplies. The company provides installation services for home projects and rents out tools and equipment. Earlier in May, Cramer said: 'Now, not that long ago, we dropped in on a monster Home Depot store management meeting in Vegas where we heard about some great ideas for spring gardening season, which by the way, kicks into overdrive this weekend. Unfortunately, these big weeks for lawn and garden have been overshadowed by stubbornly high interest rates and no rate cuts from the Fed, not to mention tariff worries. Now I've watched this stock since it came public, and there are plenty of times that Home Depot doesn't actually march to the tune of interest rates, but instead is levered to repair and renovation. An insurance broker discussing policy options with a homeowner. As so many people are stuck in their homes, I'm willing to trade up because that would force them to give up that low mortgage rate that they may have gotten during the COVID period. Now we own the despot for the Charitable Trust, and while I'm not expecting a blowout by any means, I have to tell you I like it long term, and it's down 2% for the year, well, off its highs… Home Depot stock is a great one to own because, like Walmart, these guys have the scale to cope with the tariffs that are going to be put on so many foreign-made goods that they sell at Home Depot. The little guys we know, they don't have that kind of flexibility.' Overall, HD ranks 10th on our list of stocks that Jim Cramer discusses. While we acknowledge the potential of HD as an investment, our conviction lies in the belief that some AI stocks hold greater promise for delivering higher returns and have limited downside risk. FAFSA deadline nears: Las Vegas students urged to seek aid now

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — An important deadline is quickly approaching for Las Vegas valley students heading to college this fall. The FAFSA, or Free Application for Federal Student Aid, must be submitted by the end of the month. The application is the first step to accessing billions of dollars in financial aid. 'FAFSA unlocks federal grants, loans, and work-study as well as many state and college programs aid on a first-come come-first first-served basis,' Shaan Patel, Founder and CEO of an online college prep service, said. The entire application can be completed online. 'Make sure you have all your necessary documents… so you get the maximum financial aid possible for college this fall,' Patel said. Dr. Rhea Watson, also known as The Scholarship Doctor and CEO of Scholarship Solutions, warns that skipping the FAFSA could cost you thousands of dollars. She emphasizes that it's a mistake to assume you won't qualify for financial aid. 'If you don't have a FAFSA application on file, it is nearly impossible, very difficult for your scholarship applications and even those financial aid packages you want to receive from a college,' Watson said. Roughly $3 billion in aid goes unclaimed every year, Watson said. 'Don't leave money on the table… it just goes and recycles through the government versus going to students who can use it to go to school and go without debt,' Watson said. The FAFSA only takes a few hours to complete if one is prepared. Once submitted, one can expect the financial aid award letter within 2 to 3 weeks. However, keep in mind that state and school-specific aid can run out quickly, so it's best to apply as early as possible. Documents needed for filling out the FAFSA include: Social Security number Parents' Social Security numbers (if you are a dependent student) Tax returns Records of child support received Current balances of cash, savings, and checking accounts Social Security card, driver's license, and/or alien registration card (if not a US citizen) Federal income tax returns, W-2s, and other records of money earned For more information on what students need to know before they fill out the FAFSA form, click here.
