East Las Vegas valley salon scrambling to get funds to replace stolen AC
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Employees of an east Las Vegas valley hair salon say they are on the brink of closing after their air conditioning was stolen and are scrambling to get funds together as they can't afford a new one.
As patrons entered the Fiesta Hair Salon they were met with ceiling fans swirling around. Normally, staff would adjust the thermostat but for the past couple of months, their AC unit has been busted. Owner Margaret Smith said it was the work of at least one thief.
'I called somebody out and they said that the air unit was stolen,' Smith said.
Now, she needs it replaced. Property management explained that Smith's lease agreement makes it her responsibility to pay for the replacement. She said her insurance won't cover it.
The salon is trying to raise thousands of dollars to pay for an AC unit.
It costs $22 for a haircut at Fiesta Hair Salon and $18 for seniors. A majority of the salon's clientele comes in on Saturdays.
Customers have been coming to Fiesta Hair Salon for around 20 years, however, with the Las Vegas heat approaching and the threat of shutting down, they fear they'll need to find somewhere else to go.
'They don't want me to close. They want me to find a solution,' Smith said. 'Asking for help, that's the only thing that's left now.'
She's created a GoFundMe, with signs notifying customers about it when they walk in. Some clients threw in some extra money with their haircuts. She's hoping to get the money soon, before the summer heat forces closure.
'Unless we can find something at Home Depot that will keep it cool, It'll probably be in 30 to 60 days,' she said.
Smith said her air conditioning was also stolen four years ago, and her insurance covered its replacement.
