The New Trailer for ‘Him' Brings Ritual Horror to the Gridiron

Gizmodoa day ago
Universal Pictures has just given us a new look at its upcoming sports horror film, Him, which points the spotlight squarely at the ritualistic hazing of sports bros.
Set to the horror-movie-trailer-ified sound of rapper Tupac's 'Hail Mary,' the new look at Him showcases how the fusion of its horror-meets-sports look will come to life in director Justin Tipping and producer Jordan Peele's new joint. In the new trailer, we see The Game's Cameron Cade play Tyriq Withers, a rising athlete navigating the media tour that comes with being football's next up-and-coming star. Under the tutelage of aging veteran Isaiah White, played by Marlon Wayans, the new trailer sees Cameron in a training camp that quickly goes awry.
In what was supposed to be a light affair of the athletes tossing the pigskin around a little, it quickly takes a turn when White asks Cade if he can handle the grind. After admonishing his colleagues for not being fast enough to catch, things take a turn for the worse when White has a player stand with his hands behind his back as a passing machine volleys footballs into his face, leaving him a bloody mess.
As if speaking for the viewers, Withers questions what the hell White is doing, going full frat bro with their nonchalant training camp session. But to no avail. White's retort is simply, 'In this game, violence is rewarded. So learn to enjoy it.' As a couple of cuts clue us in, Cade takes his lumps and gets stitches on his noggin before getting booped on the nose by his mentor. After which, Him's official trailer gives a bunch of surrealistic quick cuts of the film with more hazing and trippy ritualistic imagery as Cade does the only sensible thing: call his momma and tell her something isn't right.
It's not just a game. It's everything. #HimMovie is only in theaters September 19. pic.twitter.com/CD2m4WWdth
— HIM (@himmovie) August 6, 2025As we gleaned from the previous Him trailer, somewhere throughout the film, Withers has his momentum cut from underneath him when a fan attacks him and suffers from brain trauma that threatens to end his career before it starts. Regardless, we commend Monkeypaw Productions for the diabolical decision to release the trailer around the time football season starts up again. Needless to say, it is doubtful the NFL will cross-promote the film.
Seeing as how the film has more jacked-up things to show us as Withers pushes himself past mortal limits, destroying his body to pursue his dreams, Him will have more moves in its horror playbook to flourish when it releases in theaters. Alongside Wayans and Cade, Him also stars Julia Fox, Tim Heidecker, and Akeem Hayes.
Him releases on September 19.

Venus Williams falls at first hurdle in Cincinnati

Venus Williams rallied from 4-1 down in the first set but could not maintain momentum, the seven-time Grand Slam champion falling 6-4, 6-4 to Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in the first round of the ATP-WTA Cincinnati Open on Thursday. Williams, 45, was competing for the second time in three weeks after returning to the WTA tour in Washington in her first tournament in 16 months. Williams won her first-round match in Washington before bowing out to Magdalena Frech in straight sets. Bouzas Maneiro, ranked 51st, was thrilled by the sense of occasion on the opening day of the tournament, the last major tuneup prior to the August 25 start of the US Open. "It was not easy at all," the Spaniard said of taking on Williams. "She's a legend, it was a privilege to play against her." Bouzas Maneiro said her 87-minute win was "like a dream". "I never thought that I would ever play Venus," the 22-year-old said. "I was just lucky with that. "I tried to have a lot of intensity, but I had no rhythm. She hits so hard. I tried to focus. I had to be positive to win the points." Williams was playing Cincinnati for the 11th time. She reached the semi-finals in 2012 and in her most recent prior appearance had lost in the second round to China's Zheng qinwen in 2023. She said this week that after a serious health scare last year that involved surgery to remove uterine fibroids she is relishing her return to the courts. "I'm in a completely different space and I have a clean bill of health, thank God," she said. In results from the ATP Masters 1000 event draw, Brazil's Joao Fonseca began with a win over China's Bu Yunchaokete 4-6, 6-2, 7-5. Fonseca overcame 18 unforced errors and snapped a three-match losing streak in Masters 1000 events. "I was struggling a lot, missing a lot of shots, not feeling my best today," Fonseca admitted. "I was staying in the game, believing that I would find the opportunity, and I got it. I'm very happy with how I believed." Belgian Zizou Bergs defeated Britain's Jakob Fearnley 6-1, 6-4 while there were wins for Frenchmen Benjamin Bonzi and Arthur Rinderknech. str/bb
