India needs more telecom unicorns, says DoT secretary Neeraj Mittal

With the Union Cabinet approving the ₹1 lakh crore research, development, and innovation (RDI) scheme, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is hopeful that it will provide a much-needed boost to telecom startups in the country.Neeraj Mittal, secretary, DoT, told ET on the sidelines of an event in Bengaluru on Tuesday that the department looks forward to working closely with the scheme and startups. The scheme aims to scale up research, development, and innovation in sunrise domains and sectors critical to economic security, strategic interests, and self-reliance.'Deep tech is essential for the country's growth. The only difference between deep tech and tech is that you need patient capital, and telecom would fall in that category for various reasons,' Mittal said.During his address at the Matrix Global Summit 2025 on 6G technology , the DoT Secretary also noted that while telecom may not be an easy space to innovate in, the government is attempting to reduce the risk through the Telecom Technology Development Fund (TTDF), particularly in the early stages. He added that India needs several unicorns in the telecom space.With the department targeting at least 10% of global patents in 6G technology ahead of the World Radiocommunication Conference in 2027, Mittal said, 'There are more expectations from institutions that patents will come from them, from research faculties, IITs, NITs, and all these institutions which are participating. We have a call for proposals on 6G, and we hope that it will result in a lot of papers.'During a similar discussion, Reliance Jio 's senior vice president, Satish Jamadagni, underscored that despite building a homegrown 5G stack, true export viability hinges on domestic chip production. Simply having a cost advantage will not 'help in selling,' he said.'When we missed the 4G bandwagon and jumped straight to 5G, the projected technology isn't yet at its best. When we talk about exporting a 5G stack, if you don't make the chip in the country, it's not really selling,' he added.

The government is ready with another ₹47,000 crore capex plan to boost BSNL's network, the Department of Telecom said on social media platform X on Thursday. BSNL has spent ₹25,000 crore in the last year for installing 1 lakh towers for 4G mobile services. "We have another close to Rs 47,000 crore capex plan in place for BSNL. Meanwhile, BSNL has done its highest-ever capex of Rs 25,000 crore during last year," the DoT said, quoting Union Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia. IT firm TCS and a C-DoT-led consortium had bagged the majority of the ₹25,000 crore project for the supply of telecom gear to BSNL. Scindia has asked state-run telecom firm BSNL to add customers and grow its mobile service business by 50 per cent over the next year. During a review meeting with BSNL's circle and business unit heads last month, Scindia asked each unit to increase enterprise business by 25-30 per cent and fixed line business by a minimum of 15-20 per cent. The minister has asked BSNL to increase its Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) -- a key metric for a telecom company's growth -- by improving customer satisfaction and adding more subscribers. BSNL's APRU varies from circle to circle, ranging from around Rs 40 to over Rs 175 in others. Reliance Jio posted an ARPU of Rs 208, while Airtel posted an ARPU of Rs 250 for the June quarter.

Centre's approval of new chip plant in Andhra has Telangana seething—'baffling display of bias'

The manufactured products will be used in applications in mobile phones, set-top boxes, automobile applications and other electronic products, said a PIB statement following the cabinet nod. Hyderabad: The Narendra Modi-led Union Cabinet's approval of a semiconductor manufacturing facility in Andhra Pradesh under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) has not gone down well with the Congress government in neighbouring Telangana, which is accusing the Centre of 'blatant step-motherly treatment'. The Chandrababu Naidu-led Telugu Desam Party, in power in Andhra Pradesh, is also a major constituent of the National Democratic Alliance at the Centre. 'This selective approach defies logic, undermines fairness and sends a damaging signal to global investors about the Centre's priorities. 'With Quantum Computing Valley coming up fast in Amaravati, it is but natural that Andhra aspires for a semiconductor unit. Further, both the industrial nodes in Rayalaseema, Kopparthi in Kadapa and Orvakal in Kurnool are progressing well and are capable of accommodating any company. Besides Sri-City, lands at Electronic City, Tirupati, as envisaged by the previous TDP government, are also intact for the unit to be set up there too,' said Kumar. According to PIB, the four approved proposals are intended to set up semiconductor manufacturing facilities with a cumulative investment of around Rs 4,600 crore. They are expected to generate a cumulative employment for 2034 skilled professionals, which would catalyse the electronic manufacturing ecosystem, resulting in the creation of many indirect jobs. With the four new approvals Tuesday, the number of total approved projects under ISM has risen to 10, with cumulative investments of around Rs 1.6 lakh crore in six states.
