Spain's economy minister says 'overtourism' challenges need to be addressed
MADRID — Spain could receive as many as 100 million tourists this year, according to some projections, which the country's economy minister said poses challenges for the country's residents that the government can no longer afford to ignore.
Last year, Spain received a record 94 million international visitors , making it one of the most visited countries in the world.
'It's important to understand that these record numbers in terms of tourism also pose challenges,' Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo said in an interview Tuesday with The Associated Press. 'And we need to deal with those challenges also for our own population.'
Tourism is a key sector for the Southern European nation's economy, which grew faster than any major advanced economy last year at 3.2%, and is projected to grow at 2.4% this year, according to the Bank of Spain, well ahead of the expected eurozone average of 0.9%.
But a stubborn housing crisis in which home and rental costs have skyrocketed in cities such as Madrid, Barcelona and elsewhere has led to growing frustration about one aspect tied to tourism in particular: the proliferation of short-term rental apartments in city centers.
The country has seen several large protests that have drawn tens of thousands of people to demand more government action on housing. Signs at demonstrations with slogans such as 'Get Airbnb out of our neighborhoods' point to the growing anger.
In response, the government recently announced it was cracking down on Airbnb listings that it said were operating in the country illegally, a decision that the company is appealing.
'We are a 49 million-inhabitants country,' Cuerpo said. The record numbers of tourists illustrate the 'attractiveness of our country, but also of the challenge that we have in terms of dealing and providing for a good experience for tourists, but at the same time avoiding overcharging (for) our own services and our own housing,' he said.
The Bank of Spain recently said the country has a deficit of 450,000 homes. Building more public housing is critical to solve the problem, Cuerpo said. Spain has a lower stock of public housing than many other major European Union countries.
'This is the key challenge for this term,' the minister said of the country's housing woes.
On the possibility of more U.S. tariffs on EU goods, the top economic policymaker for the eurozone's fourth-largest economy said he believed the EU still wanted to reinforce economic ties with the U.S.
'From the EU side, we are constructive but we are not naive,' Cuerpo said, adding that the bloc would pursue 'other routes protecting our firms and industries' if no agreement with the Trump administration can be reached.
A 90-day pause on tariffs announced by the EU and the U.S. is slated to end on July 14. About halfway through that grace period, U.S. President Donald Trump announced 50% tariffs on steel imports. The U.S. has also enacted a 25% tariff on vehicles and 10% so-called reciprocal tariffs on most other goods.
On how Spain's current housing woes got here, the minister said a steep drop in construction in Spain following the 2008 financial crisis played a role. So did population growth due to immigration , Cuerpo said, and pressures from an increase in the number of tourists.
While building more housing is key, the minister advocated for an all-of-the-above approach, including regulating Spain's housing market and short-term rental platforms.
'For us, there's no silver bullet,' he said.

This compact razor is the perfect addition to toss into your suitcase. And the 4-in-1 Alleyoop Pen Pal, so you're not lugging around a packed bag full of makeup — this one lil' pen has eyeliner, brow liner, lip liner, and a highlighter all in one. Just toss it into your fanny pack so you can make a quick touchup while onboard the plane. A makeup-removing cloth that you can easily carry instead of lugging around a huge pack of disposable wipes. This simple washcloth can safely go through TSA (since your regular full-size bottle of liquid certainly cannot), and all it needs is some water to wipe your face clean. An in-flight foot hammock you can hang on the arms of your tray table so you can start your relaxing vacation while thousands of miles in the sky. Reduce your chance of swelling by sitting back and elevating those feet. A fold-up duffel because, let's be honest, you're sooo gonna end up bringing back a lot more than you came with — don't you just love shopping sprees?? Pack this on your trip, folded up, and bring this duffel back on the plane filled with all your new things as your personal item. A garment and travel bag set you can use when you want to keep your fancy-schmancy outfit wrinkle-free. This bag is water-resistant and comes with a separate shoe compartment! You can use this as your carry-on so your all-important outfit stays safe from airport security. Banana Republic linen pants so lightweight and airy, you're bound to wear them on the plane, on your entire vacation, in literally every picture you take. Honestly, the only problem you'll have is choosing which color to get. And definitely make sure you snag the matching button-up, too.

Colombian president accuses US of plotting coup
Colombia's leftist President Gustavo Petro accused the United States and "right-wing extremists" on Wednesday of plotting to overthrow him as the country reeled from a wave of violence. He echoed remarks by Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro, who has accused US Secretary of State Marco Rubio of leading a coup attempt against Petro in order to "fill all of Colombia with criminal gangs." "A neighboring president is saying that Marco Rubio is plotting a coup against me," Petro told a rally in Cali, the country's third-largest city. The Colombian leader, who took office in August 2022, posted online earlier that "right-wing extremists in Colombia and the United States" were in regular contact to discuss ousting him. He claimed a far-right "leader" had spoken to Rubio, without providing further details. Colombia is in the throes of its biggest security crisis in a decade ahead of next year's presidential elections. The Latin American country was rocked by a string of coordinated bomb and gun attacks on Tuesday that killed at least seven people in and around Cali. The attacks came days after right-wing opposition Senator Miguel Uribe, a presidential candidate, was shot in the head while campaigning in the capital Bogota in a brazen assassination attempt that has put Colombia on edge. Rubio said in a scathing attack on Petro that the shooting was "the result of the violent leftist rhetoric coming from the highest levels of the Colombian government". Colombia was until recently one of the United States' closest partners in Latin America. But Petro's crossing swords with his US counterpart Donald Trump over issues such as deportation flights and trade with China has put relations on ice. als/arm/cms/pbt

Multiverse Computing raises $215M for tech that could radically slim AI costs
On Thursday, Spanish startup Multiverse Computing announced that it raised an enormous Series B round of €189 million (about $215 million) on the strength of a technology it calls 'CompactifAI.' CompactifAI is a quantum-computing inspired compression technology that is capable of reducing the size of LLMs by up to 95% without impacting model performance, the company says. Specifically, Multiverse offers compressed versions of well-known open source LLMs – primarily small models – such as Llama 4 Scout, Llama 3.3 70B, Llama 3.1 8B, Mistral Small 3.1. However, it will soon release a version of DeepSeek R1, with more open source and reasoning models coming soon. Proprietary models from OpenAI and others are not supported. It's 'slim' models, as the company calls them, are available on Amazon Web Services or can be licensed for on-premises uses. The company says its models are 4x-12x faster than the comparable not-compressed versions, which translates to 50%-80% reduction in inference costs. For instance, Multiverse says that its Lama 4 Scout Slim costs 10 cents per million tokens on AWS compared to Lama 4 Scout's 14 cents. The company says that some of its models can be made so small and energy efficient they could be run on PCs, phones, cars, drones and even the DIY-enthusiast's favorite tiny PC, Raspberry PI. (We are suddenly imagining those fantastical Raspberry PI Christmas-light houses upgraded with LLM-powered interactive talking Santas.) Multiverse has some technical might behind it. It was co-founded by CTO Román Orús, a professor at the Donostia International Physics Center in San Sebastián, Spain. Orús is known for his pioneering work on tensor networks (not to be confused with all AI-related things named Tensor at Google). Tensor networks are computational tools that mimic quantum computers but run on classic computers. One of their primary uses these days is compression of deep learning models.
