Introduction: Cristian Chivu will take charge of Inter Milan for the first time against Monterrey at the Club World Cup (AP)
The Cristian Chivu era officially begins at Inter Milan tonight as they kick off their Club World Cup campaign against Monterrey in California.
The former long-serving Nerazzurri defender has returned to the San Siro as the replacement for Simone Inzaghi, who left his post just days after the 5-0 Champions League final thrashing by Paris Saint-Germain in Munich last month in order to become the new manager of Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal, who are also at this tournament.

Chivu had built up extensive coaching experience with Inter at youth level before a short-lived spell in charge at Serie A rivals Parma, with the ex-Romania international hired to return in the top job only last week after a failed pursuit of Cesc Fabregas at Como and links to the likes of Genoa's Patrick Vieira.
The 44-year-old must immediately lift spirits at Inter after their Champions League final drubbing followed hot on the heels of relinquishing the Serie A title to former head coach Antonio Conte and Napoli on a dramatic final day in addition to being beaten by arch-rivals AC Milan in both the Coppa Italia semi-finals and Supercoppa Italiana final.
Inter are in Group E at the Club World Cup, where Argentine giants River Plate are the early pacesetters after beating Japanese side Urawa Red Diamonds 3-1 in Seattle earlier on Tuesday.
Monterrey qualified for the inaugural expanded 32-team summer tournament in the United States as winners of the CONCACAF Champions League in 2021, joining Pachuca as one of only two Mexican clubs competing after Club Leon were removed and Club America lost a resulting play-off tie against Los Angeles FC.

They are captained by Sergio Ramos and coached by former Pep Guardiola assistant Domenec Torrent, who, like Chivu, is also new to the job, having been hired last month to succeed the sacked Martin Demichelis following Monterrey's loss to Toluca in the quarter-finals of the Clausura 2025.

Caitlin Clark Talks Trash After Multiple Heated Altercations

Caitlin Clark Talks Trash After Multiple Heated Altercations originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Caitlin Clark was fired up on Tuesday during the fourth quarter of the Indiana Fever's game against the Connecticut Sun. With less than four minutes left, Clark hit a step-back 3-pointer over her longtime rival, Jacy Sheldon. Following that, she had some words for the Sun's bench. The sequence led to a timeout from Connecticut, and the Fever star was pumped up. Advertisement In the second quarter of the game, things got chippy between Clark and Sheldon. There was some shoving from the two players, and veteran guard Marina Mabrey also got involved. In the third quarter, there was another altercation involving the star guard. Sheldon accidentally hit the former Iowa star in the face. The point guards for both teams got into a shoving match, but Mabrey's push caused Clark to fall to the ground. The two teams had to be separated, and the officials gave a technical foul to Clark, Mabrey and Tina Charles. Sheldon, on the other hand, was given a flagrant 1 foul. Trevor Ruszkowski-Imagn Images In the fourth quarter, Clark took the chance to increase the Fever's lead to 20 points. The fan favorite shot a step-back 3-pointer over her rival and started talking trash to Connecticut's bench. On the other end, the opposing team called a timeout and Indiana's superstar energized the crowd. In a very heated contest between the two teams, Clark and the Fever had the last laugh. They secured an 88-71 win over the Sun behind the 20 points, six assists, one rebound and two steals from their best player. Advertisement With the win, the Fever avenged their loss against Connecticut. Earlier in the 2025 WNBA season, the Sun had their first win of the season against Clark's team with an 85-83 victory. Due to the way things transpired between the two franchises, their next matchup is set to be heated. Fans will see both teams in action against each other on July 15. Gabriel Arias and Guardians spoil Rafael Devers' Giants debut with 3-2 win

SAN FRANCISCO — Gabriel Arias hit a go-ahead homer in the sixth inning and doubled in the ninth on a night when San Francisco celebrated new slugger Rafael Devers at every chance, and the Cleveland Guardians spoiled the fun by beating the Giants 3-2 on Tuesday. Jung Hoo Lee singled to start the bottom of the ninth against Emmanuel Clase, and Devers singled one out later before Heliot Ramos walked to load the bases for Dominic Smith. He flied out and Casey Schmitt struck out to end it as Clase earned his 15th save. Devers went 2 for 5 with two strikeouts in his Giants debut after being acquired in a trade from the Boston Red Sox on Sunday. He hit a go-ahead double in the third inning only for the Guardians to answer on Carlos Santana's RBI single in the fourth. Devers struck out in the first and fifth. Schmitt and Mike Yastrzemski hit consecutive singles to start the eighth against Hunter Gaddis, then Wilmer Flores entered as a pinch hitter. Flores lined out to left fielder Steven Kwan, who fired to second to get Schmitt for the double play. Arias connected for his fifth homer off lefty Robbie Ray (8-2), who struck out five and walked two, allowing three runs on five hits over six innings. Austin Hedges had a sacrifice fly in the third for Cleveland. Slade Cecconi (2-3) struck out six over five innings for the Guardians, who were coming off a sweep by the Mariners in Seattle and had lost five of six overall. Aside from Ramos' rocket throw home from left field to save a run with a double play to end the top of the ninth, for the Giants the best part of the day began long before first pitch when many of Devers' new teammates took time ahead of their pregame routines to attend his introductory news conference. The Giants came in with a .667 winning percentage (16-8) all-time vs. Cleveland, their best against any opponent. Cleveland LHP Logan Allen (4-4, 4.28 ERA) faces Giants RHP Justin Verlander (0-3, 4.33), who returns from the injured list to make his 11th start this season. ___ AP MLB:

Caitlin Clark Gets Strong Words From Colin Cowherd Amid Fever Season

Caitlin Clark Gets Strong Words From Colin Cowherd Amid Fever Season originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark missed over two weeks of action due to a quad strain. But she returned on Saturday and put on an absolute show. Advertisement Against Sabrina Ionescu and the defending WNBA champions New York Liberty, she had one of her best games as a pro. She nailed 11 of her 20 shot attempts and went 7-of-14 from 3-point range to score 32 points, and she also had nine assists, eight rebounds and two blocks in a 102-88 Indiana victory. Fox Sports 1 personality Colin Cowherd had some monumental praise for Clark by calling that performance "the greatest moment in league history," and he even compared it to NBA legend Kobe Bryant's 81-point game back in 2006. According to Cowherd, WNBA ratings plummeted 55% while Clark was out. Indeed, she has single-handedly elevated the league and all of women's basketball dating back to the spring of 2024. Advertisement Women's basketball had long been a punchline and was considered vastly inferior to the men's iteration of the sport. But when Clark blazed through her final season at Iowa and became the NCAA's all-time scoring leader among both women and men, the nation couldn't help but take notice and love what they saw from her. Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark hoists a shot while New York Liberty forward Kennedy Burke Ruszkowski-Imagn Images Thanks largely to her, WNBA ratings and attendance spiked last year, and over the last couple of years, she has formed a rivalry with Angel Reese of the Chicago Sky. Some have even compared it to the rivalry between Magic Johnson and Larry Bird that made the NBA a legitimate pro sports league in the 1980s. The Fever now have a 5-5 record and are hoping to heat up now that their franchise player is back. They will face the Connecticut Sun in Commissioner's Cup play on Tuesday.
