Waymo expands US robotaxi operations, taps Avis for Dallas fleet management

Waymo currently operates ride services via its app in Phoenix, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, while also offering rides through Uber's app in Phoenix, Austin, and Atlanta. In Austin and Atlanta, Waymo's fleet operations are handled by Avomo, a company backed by Uber. In Miami, where Waymo is set to launch next year, the company will rely on infrastructure support from Moove, another Uber-affiliated fleet manager.
Dallas is expected to become a competitive market for autonomous ridesharing, with both Uber and Lyft planning their own driverless offerings. Uber is working with local startup Avride for a deployment later this year, while Lyft aims to roll out its service in collaboration with Mobileye, an Intel spin-off, in 2026.
Waymo has been steadily expanding its presence in recent months. The firm recently extended its operational area in Austin and has commenced testing in New York City. It has also announced plans to begin trials in Philadelphia, signalling continued growth amid mounting competition, particularly from Tesla, which is also pursuing autonomous ride services.

Asif tugs at his right cheek as he ponders how to navigate from Holloway Road Station to the Quality Chop House, two miles away on Farringdon Road. A dozen fellow students of the Knowledge of London, the gruelling qualification required to drive one of the capital's famous black taxis, watch him squirm under the instructor's classroom interrogation, with another dozen listening in via a video call. Eventually he concedes defeat and rejoins the onlooking semicircle. data-vars-page-type="story" data-vars-link-type="Manual" data-vars-anchor-text="London's">London's cabbies have had a hard few years. Ride-hailing platforms such as Uber upended the market, with satnav-equipped drivers who no longer needed to memorise routes. Tighter environmental standards pushed up the cost of vehicles. Councils blocked favourite cut-throughs. Over half of London's roads now have 20mph (32kph) speed limits. Since 2017 the number of black-cab drivers has fallen from about 25,000 to barely 16,500, according to Transport for London (TfL). All black-cab drivers must pass the Knowledge, a 160-year-old test that involves memorising more than 6,000 streets and points of interest within a six-mile radius of Charing Cross. He estimates that passing the Knowledge costs £10,000 ($13,300) over two to three years, including classes and renting a scooter, the favoured means of sussing out routes. Another threat to cabbies now looms in the rear-view mirror: taxis that don't require a driver at all. From next spring the government will allow pilot schemes for autonomous taxis to roam England's roads without human oversight. This brings the country into line with China and American states including California and Texas, where Tesla and Alphabet's Waymo division are operating robotaxis. A fleet of 15 autonomous Ford Mustangs (overseen by safety drivers for now) is already venturing onto London's roads from the King's Cross headquarters of Wayve, a British tech company that last year raised over $1bn from Japan's SoftBank and others. On a recent 15-minute demo ride, it drove with a mix of calm and authority, like the best taxi drivers. Wearing a crown of seven cameras, the car was unfazed by pedestrians dawdling near zebra crossings, impatient cyclists jumping red lights or road works blocking its path. For all these challenges, a new generation of drivers is in training: 1,166 are currently studying the Knowledge, an increase from the low of 759 students in 2022, according to TfL data. Unlike existing drivers, who tend to be white, this new cohort is more ethnically mixed. Many are Uber drivers seeking higher wages and freedom from the ride-hailing apps. Students complain that the apps can pay as little as £1 a mile; a typical black-cab fare might be five or six times that. 'We've seeing more and more communities realising what the earning potential is,' says Steve McNamara, general secretary of the Licensed Taxi Drivers' Association. At the Knowledge Point School on a Tuesday evening in July, Robleh Salah takes a break from studying the large laminated maps that line the walls to explain that his main motivation is independence. A former mechanic, he has been studying the Knowledge for three years and is close to finally passing. His schedule is 11am to midnight at the school, four days a week. He drives an Uber on the other three days. London's transport authorities seem unsure how to treat taxi drivers. The mayor has set a target that 80% of journeys should be made on foot, by bike or with public transport by 2041 (though that figure has never breached 64% since heannouncedthe goal in 2018).Are taxis to be nurtured as essential public infrastructure or punished like private cars? 'Anything on four wheels that isn't a bus falls into the 20%,' says Elly Baker, chair of the London Assembly's transport committee. 'Taxis, as shared transport (because I think that's how they should be categorised), I think they've got the crappy end of the stick.' Where to, guv? The future of London's cabbies isn't entirely black. In a recent simplification of the Knowledge, TfL limited the list of locations to be memorised. Ride-hailing apps have allowed their fares to rise—and they have also introduced new clients to the convenience of taxis. 'There's a whole generation of people, young people, who have never got a bus,' notes Mr McNamara. 'Uber did us a favour.' Nowadays passengers can even book a black-cab ride through Uber. Drivers are also sceptical that robotaxis will ever be able to navigate central London's roads, or that passengers will want them. 'It will take quite a while for your average Londoner to be comfortable with not having somebody actually there,' reckons Ms Baker. For now, however, the number of licensed cabbies keeps ticking lower.

Apple starts testing smarter Siri with third-party app integration: Report
Apple's next-gen Siri, now reportedly in trials with apps like WhatsApp and YouTube, will bring deeper voice control to iOS when it reportedly launches next year New Delhi Apple is reportedly testing a revamped version of Siri with select third-party apps, hinting at an on-track release of the new and better Apple Intelligence-powered Siri by next year. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the iPhone maker is conducting this experiment with applications like Uber, AllTrails, Threads, Temu, Amazon, YouTube, Facebook, WhatsApp, and a few games. He added that Apple is also continuing to test the new Siri with its own apps. As Apple finishes the development of the next version of Siri, more third-party apps will want to integrate with the new system with the help of the App Intents system. This system, in simpler words, lets apps integrate their actions and content with iOS features like Siri, Spotlight, Shortcuts, and widgets. With Apple Intelligence, Siri can suggest and perform these actions across apps, helping users access app functions more quickly and personally. As per MacRumors, Gurman said: 'Here's what the new App Intents will mean: With nothing but your voice, you'll be able to tell Siri to find a specific photo, edit it and send it off. Or comment on an Instagram post. Or scroll a shopping app and add something to your cart. Or log in to a service without touching the screen. Essentially, Siri could operate your apps like you would — with precision, inside their own interfaces.' Key Apple Intelligence-powered Siri upgrades delayed since 2024 Apple promised three main Siri upgrades at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024. The three key upgrades for Siri under the banner of Apple Intelligence are: Natural, context-aware conversations: Siri could understand follow-up questions without repeating context, maintain the thread of a conversation, and respond in a more human-like, conversational tone. On-screen awareness: Siri could see what was currently on your display and act accordingly, such as summarising an open email, drafting a reply, or pulling information from the app you're using. Multi-step in-app actions: Siri could carry out complex, chained requests across apps in a single command, like finding a set of photos, editing them, and sending them to a contact — without multiple prompts. These features were supposed to roll out during the iOS 18 update cycle, but have not been made available yet. At WWDC 2025, Apple's Senior Vice President of Global Marketing, Greg Joswiak, confirmed in an interview with The Wall Street Journal that the Siri upgrades will now arrive in 2026. He said the feature set did not meet Apple's quality standards in internal testing. Apple is reportedly working to revamp the internal framework of Siri, before it rolls out these features. When will the new Siri be released? Apple Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook recently said the company is making 'good progress' on a more personalised version of Siri, following an earlier delay to its rollout. He confirmed the update is still planned for next year, but gave no exact launch date, MacRumors reported. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the upgraded Siri could debut in the US in spring 2026, likely alongside iOS 26.4, iPadOS 26.4, macOS 26.4, and visionOS 26.4 in March or April. The rollout may be gradual, with availability in some regions coming later, similar to the staged release of Apple Intelligence. GPT-5 integration into Apple Intelligence In related news, Apple is set to bring OpenAI's GPT-5 model to Apple Intelligence on iPhones, iPads, and Macs. In a statement to 9to5Mac, the company said the upgrade will arrive with iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS Tahoe 26. The current version of Apple Intelligence uses OpenAI's GPT-4o model. The latest operating systems, including iOS 26, are already available in public and developer beta for testing. However, GPT-5 support within Apple Intelligence has not yet been enabled. With this in place, Apple Intelligence will become smarter, eventually leading to a further polished version of Siri.
