Bitcoin Tops $111,000. Why President Trump's Bill Is Moving Crypto.

Globe and Mail25-05-2025

Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) set a new all-time high today, topping $111,000 for the first time ever. After reaching a previous all-time high in December 2024, Bitcoin declined roughly 30%, leading many to believe the bull run that saw it nearly double from September through December was over. However, in the last month, Bitcoin is up nearly 50%.
As is common, many altcoins have followed suit, with Ethereum (CRYPTO: ETH) up more than 68% in a month and Dogecoin (CRYPTO: DOGE) up nearly 50% since April.

This growth has been largely fueled by easing trade tensions with China, and more recently, a downgrade of U.S. debt and the advancement of the crypto-friendly GENIUS Act. Today's move is directly related to the U.S. House of Representatives vote to advance President Trump's tax bill and "driven by a mix of positive momentum, growing optimism around U.S. crypto regulation, and continued interest from institutional buyers," as James Butterfill, head of research for crypto-focused asset manager CoinShares, told CNBC.
GENIUS Act passes the Senate
The Senate advanced the GENIUS Act on a bipartisan 66-32 vote Monday. The bill would establish the first regulatory framework for stablecoins -- crypto tokens pegged to fiat currencies like the U.S. dollar, which could greatly advance their adoption in mainstream finance. The move was big news across crypto markets, but Ethereum saw a particular boost, as many of the most prominent stablecoins operate on its blockchain.
The fact that the bill passed with bipartisan support -- 16 Democrats joined the majority of Republicans -- was taken as an especially positive sign that more crypto-friendly bills could be coming.
Institutional buy-in is growing
Jamie Dimon, CEO of JPMorgan Chase and a longtime crypto skeptic, announced earlier this week that the asset management firm will allow clients to purchase Bitcoin. While the company won't hold it itself, it marks a major milestone, given JPMorgan's influence and Dimon's years of opposition to Bitcoin.
This comes as Bitcoin ETFs have seen consistent inflows and steady growth. So far in May, only two days have seen more money flow out of them than in. Often using these ETFs, public companies have greatly expanded their Bitcoin ownership this year: Ownership of the cryptocurrency by public companies is up 31% this year alone.
Economic fears are driving investment
Today's move in particular appears driven by the advancement of Trump's "Big Beautiful Bill." The House voted to advance the massive bill that would see a significant increase in the federal government's revenue shortfall. While there are spending cuts, the massive tax cuts will amount to a $3.8 trillion addition to the national debt, according to the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO). This has spooked Wall Street and sent bond yields higher, with the 30-year Treasury yield at its highest level since October 2023. Bond yields rise as faith in the health of the economy falls.
Bitcoin has long been held by its proponents to be a "safe haven," an alternative to the U.S. dollar and more traditional assets that are tied to the health of the economy. This hasn't always borne out. However, that is exactly what appears to be happening today. Investors are moving money from traditional assets into Bitcoin as a hedge, believing that if the broader economy worsens, Bitcoin will not move down with it.
I think both Bitcoin and Ethereum are solid investments that can help diversify your portfolio and make it more resilient during downturns. However, they are still relatively speculative and carry a decent amount of risk. Dogecoin is a meme coin, and I would caution investors to stay away from it.

Nintendo fans stoked for Switch 2 ‘mega launch'

People play on the new Nintendo Switch 2 video gaming console at a media preview event in New York on Wednesday, April 2, 2025. (AP Photo/Ted Shaffrey) With shops planning midnight launch parties after a run on pre-orders, Nintendo releases the Switch 2 on Thursday, hoping to score record early sales for the games console. But the Japanese company has its work cut out to match the overall success of the Switch, which became a must-have during the pandemic with hit games such as 'Animal Crossing'. Featuring a bigger screen and more processing power, the Switch 2 is an upgrade to its predecessor, which has sold 152 million units since it came out in 2017 -- making it the third best-selling console of all time. Serkan Toto from Tokyo consultancy Kantan Games said he 'would not be surprised to see Switch 2 breaking sales records in the next weeks and months'. In Japan, Nintendo's online store had 2.2 million pre-order applications for the Switch 2 -- an 'insane number the industry has never seen before', Toto told AFP. 'We are looking at some sort of mega launch,' he added. Challenges for Nintendo include uncertainty over US trade tariffs and whether it can convince enough people to pay the high price for its new device. The Switch 2 costs US$449.99 in the United States, more than Switch's launch price of $299.99. Both are hybrid consoles which can connect to a TV or be played on the go. New Switch 2 games such as 'Donkey Kong Bananza' and 'Mario Kart World' -- which allow players to go exploring off-grid -- are also more expensive than existing Switch titles. 'After playing it, I think it's worth the price,' 24-year-old aspiring filmmaker Steven Paterno told AFP at a Nintendo launch event in New York City. 'I loved the original Switch, but I had to admit the Switch 2 really tops it.' Pre-order cancellations Retailers in the United States, Europe and other major markets are gearing up for a rush of excited fans, with some stores opening at midnight to welcome them. 'I'm very excited to pick it up at midnight,' 22-year-old recent college graduate Angel Caceres said at the New York launch event. 'I'm going to be very tired after that.' Supply pressures have forced retailers to cancel orders, with Britain's Game saying it is 'working hard to reinstate as many affected pre-orders as possible'. 'It seems that retailers in the US were especially confident in their ability to ship pre-orders and now need to deal with some serious backlash from customers,' Toto said. He expects 'it will be hard to get a Switch 2 not only at launch but for weeks and months after, possibly through the entire year,' as was the case for months with the Switch. Nintendo forecasts it will ship 15 million Switch 2 consoles in the current financial year, roughly equal to the original console in the same period after its release. The Switch 2 'is priced relatively high' compared to its predecessor, so it 'will not be easy' to keep initial momentum going, the company's president Shuntaro Furukawa said at a financial results briefing in May. 'Super excited' The Switch 2 has eight times the memory of the first Switch, and its controllers, which attach with magnets, can also be used like a desktop computer mouse. New functions allowing users to chat as they play online and temporarily share games with friends could also be a big draw for young audiences used to watching game streamers. 'People were a bit shocked by the price of 'Mario Kart World', the first $80 game that we've ever seen,' said Krysta Yang of the Nintendo-focused Kit & Krysta Podcast. But while the company is 'going to have to do some work' to convince more casual gamers that it's worth upgrading, Nintendo fans are 'super excited', she told AFP. In the United States, Nintendo delayed pre-orders for the Switch 2 by two weeks as it assessed the impact from President Donald Trump's aggressive duties on trading partners around the world. But tariff uncertainty could in fact push consumers to buy a Switch 2 sooner, because they are worried that the price could go up, according to Yang. And the stakes are high for Nintendo. While the 'Super Mario' maker is diversifying into theme parks and hit movies, around 90 percent of its revenue still comes from the Switch business, analysts say.

Prediction: Tesla Stock Won't Recover in 2025 (And Insiders Seem to Agree)

Between Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) failing to meet the deadlines that Elon Musk sets and Musk's decision to split his time at Tesla with various other endeavors, many investors are losing confidence and questioning whether the stock can recover from its plunge in 2025. But the actions of Tesla insiders are providing a clear indication. Two insiders have sold company stock -- a development that represents a glaring yellow light for those with shares of Tesla parked in their portfolios. Where to invest $1,000 right now? Our analyst team just revealed what they believe are the 10 best stocks to buy right now. Continue » Some see Tesla stock powering ahead From Cathie Wood, who thinks Tesla stock will soar to $2,600 over the next five years, to analysts at Wedbush, which has a $500 price target, plenty see Tesla stock driving in the right direction. Some (like Wood) think the launch of Tesla's Robotaxi business, a fully autonomous ride-hailing network, will be a considerable boon for the company. Musk claims the company is making steady progress toward launching the service, providing some insight in a recent post on X: For the past several days, Tesla has been testing self-driving Model Y cars (no one in driver's seat) on Austin public streets with no incidents. A month ahead of schedule. Next month, first self-delivery from factory to customer. -- Elon Musk (@elonmusk) May 29, 2025 Others are encouraged by the news that Musk has chosen to refocus his attention on Tesla. Shares jumped on Thursday morning, for example, after investors learned that Musk had announced that he will be stepping back from his role in the Trump administration. Bulls see the road ahead through a rose-colored windshield At this point, I'm unconvinced of the bulls' viewpoint. The argument that the company's Robotaxi business will soon drive significant growth seems overblown. While the company has started testing driverless Robotaxis in Austin, there has been significant damage to the Tesla brand, and customers' eagerness to embrace Tesla's Robotaxi service doesn't seem as strong a possibility as it did just last year. Plus, there is stiff competition from companies providing their own self-driving taxi services. In addition to Alphabet 's (NASDAQ: GOOG)(NASDAQ: GOOGL) Waymo and General Motors ' (NYSE: GM) Cruise, Tesla faces competition from private companies like Wayve. Another pothole in Tesla's road to recovery is the company's declining deliveries. In Q1 2025, Tesla reported deliveries of 336,681 vehicles, representing a 13% year-over-year decline. While there have been court rulings deeming President Trump's tariffs unlawful, it's not clear what the future will bring. Also, customer demand may have been diverted by other electric car options. These insiders aren't convinced Tesla's charging forward either Investors look all over for insight, but one thing they're particularly sensitive to is the trading activity of company insiders. When insiders buy stock, for instance, it's a pretty clear indication that they expect shares to rise in the near future. On the other hand, when they sell stock, it may mean that they see shares dipping in the near future. Two prominent insiders have chosen to sell significant stakes of Tesla stock this week. Ira Ehrenpreis, who has served on the board of directors since 2007, sold 477,572 shares in a transaction valued at about $162,059,282, and Kimbal Musk, Elon's brother and one of the largest individual Tesla shareholders, sold 91,588 shares, totaling about $31,079,472. Neither Ehrenpreis nor Kimbal Musk has offered an explanation, but it's possible the Robotaxi service isn't in such good shape as Elon suggests. Is it a good time to hitch a ride with Tesla stock? For some, there's not much more reading of tea leaves needed. Tesla's falling sales, the uncertainty around its Robotaxi service, and the recent insider transactions are all the material they need to decide it's best to watch Tesla stock from the side of the road. For those still on the fence, there's also the stock's price tag. Shares are changing hands at 185 times forward earnings, a steep premium to the five-year average P/E of seems clear that it's best to keep Tesla stock at arm's length for the time being. Don't miss this second chance at a potentially lucrative opportunity Ever feel like you missed the boat in buying the most successful stocks? Then you'll want to hear this. On rare occasions, our expert team of analysts issues a 'Double Down' stock recommendation for companies that they think are about to pop. And the numbers speak for themselves: Nvidia: if you invested $1,000 when we doubled down in 2009, you'd have $366,219!* Apple: if you invested $1,000 when we doubled down in 2008, you'd have $38,589!* Netflix: if you invested $1,000 when we doubled down in 2004, you'd have $656,825!* Right now, we're issuing 'Double Down' alerts for three incredible companies, available when you join Stock Advisor, and there may not be another chance like this anytime soon.
