Kremlin says Putin and Zelenskyy can only meet as final step to peace deal
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that it was unlikely that such a meeting could occur by the end of August, as Ukraine has proposed.
"A summit meeting can and should put the final point on a settlement and cement the modalities and agreements worked out by experts. It is impossible to do it the other way round," Peskov told reporters.
"Is it possible to go through such a complex process in 30 days? Well, obviously, it is unlikely."
A Ukrainian delegate said after the latest brief round of peace talks between the two countries on Wednesday that Kyiv had proposed a Putin-Zelenskyy meeting in August because that would fall within the 50-day deadline that US President Donald Trump had set last week for a deal.
Trump has threatened new sanctions on Russia and buyers of its exports unless an agreement is reached by early September.
Peskov once again described the two sides' negotiating positions as "diametrically opposed".

A notorious Russian hacking group is impersonating a prominent cyber security firm and using the country's internet providers to spy on foreign embassies, according to a report published on July 31 by Microsoft. The attackers, a group known as Turla or Secret Blizzard, engaged in a 'large scale' cyber-espionage campaign in which they used Russian internet service providers, or ISPs, to conduct their hacks, according to Microsoft. Turla hackers also disguised their malware to impersonate cybersecurity software from the Russian cybersecurity company Kaspersky. Kaspersky did not immediately respond to a request for comment. With access to those Russian ISPs, the hackers then targeted foreign embassies in Moscow, redirecting victims' internet traffic and delivering malware as part of the apparent intelligence-gathering operation, the report said. Microsoft declined to name specific targets. The malware, known as ApolloShadow, strips away targets' encryption, thereby converting the hacking targets' internet activity into clearly readable data, including browsing and sensitive credentials, according to Microsoft. This particular hacking group has been active for over 25 years. The US government said the group, widely considered one of the most sophisticated and persistent in the world, is part of the Russian Federal Security Service. The Department of Justice in 2023 said it dismantled a sprawling network of computers that Turla used to target victims around the world on behalf of the government in Moscow. This hacking campaign occurs during a moment of substantial tension between Russia and the international community. Russia's war in Ukraine has vastly increased enmity between Russia, Europe and the Trump administration. Russian President Vladimir Putin also is tightening his grip on the country's domestic internet by sponsoring a sprawling super app and threatening to ban secure competitors like WhatsApp. Russia's domestic interception systems, such as the System for Operative Investigative Activities, or Sorm, likely play a key role in enabling these large scale operations, according to Microsoft. Germany to start deliveries of two Patriot systems to Ukraine

BERLIN - Germany said on Aug 1 that it will soon start delivering two more US-made Patriot air defence systems to Ukraine, as Kyiv faces a growing number of Russian drone and missile attacks. After reaching an agreement with the United States, the German military will deliver additional Patriot launchers in the coming days, and will supply further components in the next two to three months, the defence ministry said in a statement. In return, Germany has agreed with the US Defense Department that it will be the 'first country' to receive expedited delivery of new-generation Patriot systems. Berlin currently has nine Patriot systems, having delivered three to Ukraine since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022. Two of Germany's systems are currently stationed in southeast Poland to protect Rzeszow airport, a transit point for weapons deliveries to Ukraine, with another being used to train Ukrainian soldiers. Germany has been Ukraine's second-largest supplier of aid after the United States. An AFP analysis showed on Aug 1 that Russia fired 6,297 long-range drones into Ukraine in July, more than at any time since the invasion began in February 2022. On Aug 1 , Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said 31 people had been killed and 159 had been wounded in a Russian air strike in Kyiv the previous day. Thanks to the U.S. commitment, "Germany can initially support Ukraine with launchers and then with additional Patriot system components," said German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius in a statement. The Bundeswehr army will initially deliver additional Patriot launchers to Ukraine in the coming days, followed by additional system components to be handed over in two or three months. In return, Berlin will receive new Patriot systems, for which it is providing the funding, from the United States at an accelerated pace. Ukraine's needs for air defence have grown more urgent as Russia has intensified its nationwide aerial attacks this summer, and the Patriot systems have proven effective at destroying Russian ballistic missiles.
