CF Montréal vows to ‘undertake a rebuild' in letter to fans amid dreadful season

Club de Foot Montreal
In the midst of a disastrous season where the team sits last overall in the MLS standings, CF Montréal has promised to 'undertake a rebuild' in a letter addressed to fans on Wednesday.
In a note signed by president and CEO Gabriel Gervais, along with team owner Joey Saputo's sons Luca and Simone, the soccer club acknowledged it has 'not met the standards we set for ourselves.'

After 24 games, CF Montréal has a 3-6-15 record and is tied for last overall in the league with only 20 goals scored.
'We share your dissatisfaction with the Club's results, and it is our responsibility to build a winning team that we can all be proud of.
'That is why we have decided to undertake a rebuild and launch a new chapter of CF Montréal. A chapter based on ambition and pride. A new era with victory at the heart of our sporting ambitions, while also honouring our rich history and the connection with you, our 12th player.'
The team also promised to take 'concrete steps' during the coming transfer window aimed at 'rebuilding, together, a club that deserves your loyalty.'
In a restructuring last year, Luca Saputo was named managing director (recruitment and sporting methodology) while Simone became managing director (academy strategy and roster management). Gervais has been president and CEO since 2022.
The team made headlines this month when Inter Miami forward and soccer legend Lionel Messi scored twice in a stellar performance to lead his club to a 4-1 victory at Saputo Stadium.
Days later, CF Montréal was eliminated by Canadian Premier League club Forge FC from the Canadian Championship for the second consecutive year.

Newcastle signs Jacob Ramsey from Aston Villa for reported $53M

NEWCASTLE, England (AP) — Newcastle bolstered its midfield options ahead of a return to the Champions League by signing midfielder Jacob Ramsey from Aston Villa for a reported $53 million on Sunday. The 24-year-old Ramsey, who came through Villa's academy and made 167 appearances for the club, is Newcastle's fourth signing of a transfer window where most of the focus has been on its star striker, Alexander Isak. Isak has been linked with a move to Liverpool. Newcastle has already signed winger Anthony Elanga, goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale and defender Malick Thiaw. 'This is a big move for me,' Ramsey said, 'but as soon as I knew the gaffer (manager Eddie Howe) was interested and really liked me, it didn't take much time to decide. His track record of developing players, especially those who have gone on to become internationals here, speaks for itself.' Howe said Ramsey's 'qualities will bring us something different on the pitch.' 'He fits the profile of being young and hungry to develop, but also with a wealth of Premier League football under his belt,' Howe said. 'Jacob offers versatility and his directness in attack.' ___ AP soccer:

Chelsea held 0-0 by Palace as Forest opens with a win in the Premier League

Chelsea was held to a 0-0 draw by Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Sunday in the team's first competitive match as the club world champion. A month after stunning Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup final, Chelsea toiled in its league opener at Stamford Bridge after a short preseason because of its exertions in the United States. Nottingham Forest, meanwhile, hit the ground running with a 3-1 win over Brentford, with striker Chris Wood — the team's top scorer last season with 20 goals — netting twice in the first half either side of a goal on debut by Dan Ndoye. Later, Manchester United hosts Arsenal in the marquee match of the opening round, which has already seen wins for likely title contenders Liverpool and Manchester City. Eze's farewell? Eberechi Eze has been heavily linked with a move to Tottenham so the England midfielder might have been making his final appearance for Palace. He almost marked it with a goal. In the 13th minute, Eze smashed a direct free kick past Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez from the edge of the area but the goal was ruled out after a video review spotted an infringement by Palace captain Marc Guehi as he attempted to push aside Chelsea's Moises Caicedo in the defensive wall. The Premier League confirmed Guehi was standing less than one meter (yard) from the wall as the shot was taken, which is not allowed. Joao Pedro and Cole Palmer, stars for Chelsea in the Club World Cup were quiet. The hosts lacked intensity because they've only been back in training for a couple of weeks, while Palace has had a long preseason and was coming off beating Liverpool on penalties in the Community Shield last weekend. Hot Wood Chris Wood started quickly last season in the best goalscoring top-flight campaign of his career, and he needed just five minutes to open his account this time round, making the most of a poor clearance at a corner to give Forest the lead against Brentford. Ndoye headed in a second in the 42nd minute and Wood rounded the goalkeeper in first-half stoppage time to stroke in a third. Igor Thiago converted a late penalty for a consolation for Brentford, which has sold star forward Bryan Mbeumo to Manchester United and didn't play Yoane Wissa — a striker linked with a move to Newcastle. Goalkeeper Donnarumma left out of PSG squad again, days after saying he wants to leave

PARIS (AP) — Goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma was left out of the Paris Saint-Germain squad for its Ligue 1 game at Nantes on Sunday, days after being dropped for the UEFA Super Cup final. Donnarumma already said he wants to leave PSG amid speculation he will soon join Premier League giant Manchester City. The Italy No. 1 was arguably PSG's best player last season, helping it win the Champions League for the first time with a string of decisive performances in the knockout stages. But PSG coach Luis Enrique signed goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier from Lille during the offseason, reportedly because of his superior passing ability from the back, in a move that reportedly displeased Donnarumma. ___ AP soccer:
