Bikram Majithia's arrest is vendetta, says Harsimrat

The state government is resorting to 'vendetta' politics, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal said after tying rakhi (sacred thread) to her brother Bikram Singh Majithia on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan in Nabha jail on Saturday. Harsimrat Kaur also alleged that the jail administration initially stopped her at the outer gate of the jail and made her wait for hours. (HT Photo) Kaur also alleged that the jail administration initially stopped her at the outer gate of the jail and made her wait for hours. 'When no response came from officials, I attempted to walk inside holding a box of sweets. After that the jail administration allowed the meeting,' she claimed. Speaking to the reporters after the interaction, Kaur said, 'The present government has been indulging in such (vendetta) politics for a long time. People will give them a befitting reply in the upcoming assembly elections.' Notably, the Mohali district court had on July 6 sent Majithia, the former cabinet minister, to 14 days of judicial custody in a disproportionate asset (DA) case relating to alleged laundering of ₹540 crore in 'drug money'. Majithia was arrested by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau from his residence in Green Avenue, Amritsar, on June 25 this year. Responding to the questions about the charges, she claimed that Majithia had been continuously speaking out against the state government, which was why action was taken against him. 'Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann is diverting attention from the real issues by putting Majithia behind the bars. The CM has failed to fulfil his party's pre-poll promises. Therefore they are making efforts to divert attention from the issues concerning Punjab,' said the MP. When asked about Majithia's health, she said, 'My brother is in high spirits. He is doing well. He is concerned about the issues concerning Punjab, including the land pooling scheme.'

Noida: A former human resources head of a private news channel and a head constable were arrested for allegedly breaching UP Police's crime tracking network and selling confidential information. The accused, Lalit Pandit of Greater Noida and head constable Prashant Solanki of Baghpat, were detained on Friday and arrested on Saturday. Police say Solanki provided Pandit with login credentials for the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) — a centralised database of case files, criminal histories, confidential FIRs and other sensitive information — which Pandit then used to monitor police activities and leak data for money. "The head constable also received a share of the proceeds. We have identified at least two transactions of Rs 10,000 each between them," SHO Sector 63 Avdesh Pratap Singh said. Currently, he is posted at Khair police station in Aligarh. He is suspected of sharing his CCTNS credentials with Pandit while posted at Kasna police station earlier this year. The breach came to light after Pandit allegedly posted sensitive Pocso case data on social media—an offence that prompted his detention. Police said they were now examining the duration and extent of the breach, as well as identifying the possible buyers of the leaked information. Both men have been booked under relevant provisions of the BNS and the Official Secrets Act. On Saturday, a local court remanded them in judicial custody. CCTNS is a 'mission mode project' under the national e-Governance plan of govt of India aimed at creating a comprehensive and integrated system for enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of policing. IndiGo penalised, ordered to pay 1.75L for ‘dirty seats'

New Delhi: The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, New Delhi, recently held IndiGo Airlines liable for deficiency in service due to unhygienic and stained seats on a flight, directing a compensation of Rs 1.75 lakh. The bench, comprising president Poonam Chaudhry and members Bariq Ahmed and and Shekhar Chandra, observed on July 18 that dirty seating arrangements constituted a direct violation of consumer expectations and the airline's contractual obligations. Holding the airline guilty of deficiency in service, the commission denied the refund plea as the complainant had travelled from Baku to Delhi. However, the commission granted the compensation of Rs 1.5 lakh for mental agony, physical pain and harassment of the complainant and Rs 25,000 as litigation expenses. On Jan 2, 2025, she boarded the IndiGo flight and found that the seats were dirty and unhygienic. When the issue was reported to an air hostess, she expressed her helplessness to provide clean seats. As an alternative, the air hostess offered the complainant an isolated seat in the 14th row. She also offered a sincere apology. On Jan 13, Pinki sent a legal notice to the airline. After not receiving any satisfactory response, she approached the district commission, praying for appropriate compensation. She submitted that the harassment and emotional distress throughout the duration of the flight caused her considerable mental anguish. She further alleged that the poor quality and detrimental service extended to the customers in the international sector amounted to misconduct and reflected the sub-standard nature of services. The airline submitted that the issue of the unhygienic seat was immediately resolved by the cabin crew and the complainant was accommodated in a different seat. The bench, however, observed that dirty seating arrangements constituted a direct violation of consumer expectations and the airline's contractual obligations. The commission also said that as per the civil aviation requirements, any airline registered in India is required to provide a responsive and functional grievance redressal mechanism along with a dedicated helpline number, which are in line with the Consumer Protection Act 2019.
