Endurance athletes that carry Neanderthal genes could be held back from reaching their peak

Scientists have uncovered a genetic variant, inherited from Neanderthals, that may limit athletic performance.
The mutation is thought to affect roughly 8% of modern-day Europeans and influences the activity of a key enzyme in the production of energy in skeletal muscle.
In a study published July 10 in the journal Nature Communications, researchers analyzed more than 2,700 individuals, which revealed that those who carried the Neanderthal gene variant were half as likely to become top athletes as those without the variant.
The variant was found in up to 8% of present-day Europeans, 3% of Native Americans and 2% of South Asians, while it was absent in Africans, East Asians and African-Americans. "Since modern humans mixed with Neanderthals around 50,000 years ago, particularly in Europe and Western Asia, non-African populations today carry about 1–2% Neanderthal DNA," Dominik Macak, the study's first author and Doctoral Student at Max-Planck-Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, told Live Science in an email.
While the Neanderthal variant is not linked with any major health issues, its impact on the body's ability to produce energy during intense exercise could lead to reduced athletic performance in endurance and power sports, the researchers say.
During exercise, cells gain energy by breaking down a molecule called adenosine triphosphate (ATP), often described as our body's "batteries". One way that our body creates ATP, particularly during intense exercise, is by turning two molecules of adenosine diphosphate (ADP) into one molecule of ATP and one of adenosine monophosphate (AMP).
The ATP produced by this reaction is used to power energetic processes in our cells, while the AMP byproduct is removed by an enzyme called AMPD1. It's this enzyme that is impaired in those with the Neanderthal gene variant, the researchers found.
To test the impacts of this gene variant, scientists recreated the Neanderthal version of the AMPD1 enzyme in the lab. They found that it was 25% less active than the enzyme produced in humans with other variants of the gene. Next, they genetically engineered mice to express the altered AMPD1 and found that the enzyme was up to 80% less active than the non-Neanderthal variant.

The researchers then analyzed the prevalence of the gene among elite athletes and non-athletes. They found that 4% to 14% of athletes carried this genetic variant, while 9% to 19% of non-athletes had the variant. Carrying just one copy of the Neanderthal gene (out of the two copies inherited from parents) led to a 50% lower probability of achieving elite athletic status, the data suggested.
Those that carry the Neanderthal gene may struggle with more extreme exercise because the impaired enzyme will allow AMP to build up in their muscles, making it harder for them to produce ATP as fast as their cells need. However, having the Neanderthal gene variant is unlikely to affect most people's daily activities, where energy is obtained by other means. It is only during endurance sports or in exercises that demand muscular power that carriers might be at a slight disadvantage, the researchers said.
But how might this variant have impacted the Neanderthals themselves? "It's very unlikely that this single genetic variant played a role in the extinction of the Neanderthals," Macak said. "We find it in both early and later Neanderthal individuals, suggesting it was stably present over thousands of years. Additionally, some modern humans today carry mutations that disrupt the AMPD1 protein entirely, often without any major health issues. So, while the gene affects muscle metabolism, it likely wasn't a decisive factor in their ability to survive."

Squatting with or without weights requires solid technique and form to prevent injury and maximize your performance (and gains). You might still build strength and muscle with poor form, but at what cost? Squats build lower-body strength and core stability; depending on the squat variation you prefer, you might see more engagement in the upper body, or more emphasis on the front or back of your body. For example, front squats hit the quads harder because of the front-rack placement of the weights; back squats hit the posterior chain harder because the weight is rear-loaded. But squat benefits aside, if you want to strengthen, build, or sculpt muscular legs using the squat exercise, there are two under-represented tweaks I'd make to your form (and common mistakes to avoid) to help you get there. These are them. What two mistakes should you avoid? These are two areas that you might not know about, but should. 1. Butt winking Yes, butt winks really are a thing, and they're very common, too. Butt winking means the slight rounding of the lumbar spine that occurs at the bottom of the squat. It happens when the pelvis slightly tucks under, creating a soft c-shape. The good news is that if you're a butt winker, you don't have to be. This isn't high school, and you're not stuck with the name for life. It can be fixed, and to avoid lower back injury, it should be. The heavier you lift, the stronger you get, but fixing your butt winks matters even more. All that load on your body will take its toll if you don't keep your lower back safe. There are a few reasons butt winks occur, including a lack of mobility in the hips, knees, ankles, or thoracic spine, strength, or incorrect stance (more on that in a moment), and all of these are fixable. Here are the 7 best ways to fix 'butt winks' during squats. 2. Unstable foot positioning Stance is crucial to stability and form during squats and can be the difference between you executing a successful lift or not. There have been many times in the past when my stance has sent my bar tumbling to the floor behind me or sent me careening forward. When I refer to foot positioning or stance, I'm not talking about how wide or narrow your feet are. A narrower stance may suit those with greater lower-body mobility and is more quad-dominant than a wider stance; the latter can suit beginners or those who need a little more space, although make sure your knees don't turn in to compensate. Wide stances used for the likes of sumo squats also emphasize the glutes, specifically the outer glutes, more than a narrow stance. The good news is that if you're a butt winker, you don't have to be. This isn't high school, and you're not stuck with the name for life. Traditionally, personal trainers teach you to drive through the heels — the words 'Keep the weight in your heels or 'Push through your heels as you stand' left my mouth often when I first started teaching, but it's not what I teach now with more experience behind me. The weight should never be in the balls of your feet, as this sends your bodyweight forward, so sending the weight to your heels isn't 'bad,' and will help you drive heavy weights more successfully and with more stability. However, I use a tripod foot position, which means distributing the weight between your little and big toes and your heels, giving you three strong points of contact. It provides a wider base for stability and will improve your foot-ground connection so that you can drive through the feet better. While that sounds like a long time, it's just a blip in the 13.8 billion-year story of the universe. And one day, the solar system will cease to exist. But when will the solar system end? And how will it die out? The answers to those questions depend on how we define the death of the solar system. The solar system consists of eight planets, several dwarf planets, hundreds of moons, and billions of asteroids, comets and meteoroids. The exact boundaries of the solar system are subject to debate, but there are three main candidates: the Kuiper Belt, a region of icy objects beyond Neptune; the heliopause, where the sun's magnetic field ends; and the Oort cloud, a theoretical icy cloud lying beyond both the Kuiper Belt and the heliosphere. And, of course, at the center of it all, the sun is keeping it all together with its immense gravity. Like all stars, the sun will eventually die. Right now, it creates heat and light by transforming hydrogen into helium in its core through a process called nuclear fusion. The sun will continue to burn hydrogen for approximately another 5 billion years, said Fred Adams, a theoretical astrophysicist at the University of Michigan. But once that hydrogen fuel runs out, the sun will become more and more unstable. Its core will collapse, its surface will expand, and it will transform into a cool, bloated red giant that will engulf Mercury and then Venus. While our planet might be at the border of the red giant's surface, Adams said, chances are, it will get sucked into the red giant, too. By this point, though, humans will have been long gone. Mars will likely survive the red giant, and the outer planets are all safely outside of the red giant's reach. About a billion years later, the sun will shrink to the size of Earth and transform into a white dwarf — a dim, extremely dense core of its former self. The solar system will become a freezing, desolate place. "From a habitability standpoint, that's kind of the end of the solar system," Alan Stern, a planetary scientist and principal investigator of NASA's New Horizons mission, told Live Science. Although the sun's death marks the end of the solar system as we know it, it doesn't necessarily mean its total demise. "A strict, nerdy answer is that the solar system will never end due to the sun's evolution" or the death of the sun, Stern said. Even when the sun is a burnt out cinder, he said, many objects — including giant planets like Jupiter — will continue to orbit it. Even further into the future, Adams said, the likelihood of rare events increases. Without the sun's gravitational force, the solar system will become increasingly chaotic as the gravitational balance of the solar system shifts. The risk of collisions, passing stars or supernovas coming too close to the solar system and then tearing apart its celestial bodies and space rocks will also be magnified. "We're not just waiting until the universe is twice as old. We're waiting till it's a billion times older, a trillion times older, and a quadrillion times older," he explained. "If you wait, those enormous time scales and rare events start to add up. It's like, it's rare for you to win the lottery, but if you play a billion times, your chances will go up." Even if the solar system is spared a catastrophic collision, it won't last forever. Some scientists also think the protons that make up our universe will decay. The phenomenon has never been observed, but theoretical experiments have placed the proton's lifetime past 1034 years, and that number might be pushed back even further as experiments into their longevity keep running. Luckily, there are plenty of other ways you can get your cardio-fix that require no jumping or throwing yourself around on the floor – like this 15-minute workout from Sweat Trainer Britany Williams. It features dynamic, multi-joint movements that engage multiple muscle groups at once. As these exercises require more energy to perform, they elevate your heart rate and help you burn more calories. To take it up a notch – and give your metabolism an extra boost – Britany also incorporates two light dumbbells, challenging your body to work even harder. You've got three supersets that you'll work through for this workout, each of which contains two exercises.
