Progressive city removes ALL its speed cameras...but they'll soon be back in far greater numbers
Portland 's 32 speed cameras will be replaced with double the number of the newer models as city leaders emphasize their effectiveness in high-crash areas.
On Monday the Portland Police Bureau and the Bureau of Transportation announced a new contract with Novoa Global.
'The city has been working with a contract that's been problematic. They're getting a new contractor that's going to be good,' Portland City Councilor Steve Novick told KOIN.
'I talked to the head of Multnomah County Courts the other day and they said that there's ways that they can expand their capacity to handle more processing, more speeding and red light camera violations.'
The new contractor will be the only supplier and operator of speed cameras, with plans to have the replacements in place 2 by November 1, according to a press release.
'[Novoa Global's] comprehensive traffic safety solutions - including red light, speed, and school zone speed enforcement - offer turnkey programs to help combat the ongoing crisis of traffic-related injuries and fatalities,' the release said.
The city council has hopes to increase the number of speed cameras to 64 within the next few years, with three more locations in the coming months.
Novick is one of the supporting city council members pushing to increase the cameras monitoring red lights and speed.
'New York City has 3,000 of these things. Based on road miles, I think we should have 1,000,' Novick told Willamette Week, saying doubling the city's cameras in three years 'seems like a glacial pace.'
The council member emphasized the effectiveness of the cameras at reducing speed and curbing traffic related deaths.
Earlier this year the City Council's Transportation Committee passed a resolution that 'reaffirmed' their commitment to Vision Zero, which focuses on eliminating traffic injuries and deaths.
Council Vice President Tiffany Koyama Lane's resolution to create a Vision Zero Task Force intended to 'support the goal of zero traffic deaths and evaluate and report to council on advancement to those goals annually.'
'In the first six months of our city council there haven't been a lot of opportunities to work specifically... on projects such as fixed speed traffic cameras,' said Koyama Lane according to a report by WW.
'I have noticed many more installations and full support them as a cost-effective intervention that does indeed reduce crashes and the resulting injuries.'
Among Vision Zero's clauses was a proposition to 'change the design of streets to reduce speeds and protect people.'

ESPN-NFL deal faces regulatory hurdles
LOS ANGELES, Aug 7 (Reuters) - The National Football League's deal with Walt Disney (DIS.N), opens new tab in which it will gain an equity stake in ESPN in return for prime media assets is expected to face scrutiny from the U.S. Department of Justice, according to legal experts and industry sources. The agreement, announced late Tuesday, involves Disney's ESPN acquiring the NFL Network and other media properties in exchange for the league receiving a 10 percent stake in the sports network. Barlow, a partner at Doyle, Barlow & Mazard, said the transaction "surely raises competition concerns," because it could potentially give Disney greater control over televised sports carriage and reduce competition. "The deal could potentially result in higher costs for consumers, as Disney's dominance in sports media could limit options and drive up prices for streaming services or game access," Barlow said. The Justice Department is expected to conduct a substantive review of the new ESPN-NFL transaction, according to one source familiar with the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity. Another source said obtaining U.S. antitrust clearance could take up to 12 months. ESPN and the NFL declined comment. The expected review comes as the Justice Department's Antitrust Division is examining a separate deal Disney reached earlier this year to acquire a controlling stake in the sports streaming service Fubo TV. The division demanded further information from the companies in March to examine whether the deal would unduly concentrate the market for sports streaming. Meanwhile, the issue of rising costs for fans as games migrate to streaming services has reached the Senate, where the Commerce Committee held a hearing in May. "In an era of deep partisan division, sports might be the most powerful cultural unifier we have," said Republican Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, who chairs the committee, noting it brings together Americans whether they're watching from their couches or in the stands. "It was worked out in record time," said Barlow, adding that this time around, he expects the Justice Department "to take a close look before approving the deal." Targa Resources beats profit estimates on record gas volumes, boosts share buyback program

In April, the U.S. Energy Information Administration said U.S. power consumption will hit new record highs in 2025 and 2026, on the back of data centers dedicated to AI and cryptocurrency. The company's quarterly Permian natural gas inlet volumes rose about 11% to a record 6.28 billion cubic feet per day from a year earlier, while NGL pipeline transportation volumes surged about 23% also to a record 961,200 barrels per day. The Houston, Texas-based company's adjusted core profit rose 18% to $1.16 billion for the quarter ended June 30, from a year earlier, beating analysts' average estimate of $1.14 billion, according to LSEG data. Total revenue rose 20% to $4.26 billion, helped by higher NGL volumes and natural gas prices, though partially offset by lower NGL prices. Targa supplies natural gas and NGLs to key markets through its network of gathering and processing assets across the Permian Basin, Eagle Ford Shale, Bakken Shale and other major U.S. oil and gas regions. The company transports, processes and fractionates NGLs into component products like ethane, propane and butane.
