Bird flu is back and the failure to limit its spread has led to concerning outbreaks among dairy cows and forced farmers to slaughter hundreds of millions of chickens — and egg prices are surging again because of it. In some parts of the country, customers are paying double the average price, with organic and free-range varieties becoming even more expensive. Others are walking into grocers to find the egg fridges barren, with some stores going as far as to place limits on how many customers can buy at once. To make matters worse, an end to the shortage is not in sight. The Agriculture Department expects prices to surge another 20% this year, and restaurants are responding — including Anthony Bourdain's favorite 24-hour dining spot, Waffle House.
Customers of the popular, southern breakfast chain were met with signs posted on the doors announcing a temporary, $.50 surcharge per egg due to the nation-wide rise in cost. "The continuing egg shortage caused by HPAI (bird flu) has caused a dramatic increase in egg prices," Waffle House said in a statement to CNN. "Customers and restaurants are being forced to make difficult decisions." According to its website, eggs are Waffle House's most ordered item — surpassing hash browns and waffles to serve its customers a total of 272 million per year. Waffle House added that it'd continue to monitor egg prices and "adjust or remove the surcharge as market conditions allow."

Waffle House's signature breakfast special, popularly known as the All-Star Special, includes an order of grits, toast, bacon, and, of course, a must order restaurant waffle, with eggs served your way. It has built an established reputation as a favorite among customers for its balance in taste and value — but, at $11.30, some people already found the price difficult to justify. However, given the chain's recent egg surcharge implementation, those who frequented for a quick, cheap, or late night meal might find themselves thinking twice. Especially given the inflation they're already experiencing on the food they purchase at grocery stores.
Most of the classic breakfast items at Waffle House, including the All-Star Special and the breakfast hashbrown bowls, come with a standard order of two eggs. Accounting for the temporary, $.50 surcharge per egg the breakfast chain recently implemented, that would bring your total to an entire $1 more. But, as mentioned in its statement to CNN, Waffle House claims it will continue to monitor egg prices and adjust that surcharge as the market allows. While that could mean they will eventually remove it, it also means that it could change — and given that the Agriculture Department expects the prices on eggs to increase more in 2025, that charge is most likely going to get more expensive before that happens.

However, sentiment soured quickly over two main sticking points: China's control over so-called rare earth minerals and its access to semiconductor technology originating from the US. Lutnick said that China's restrictions on exports of rare earth minerals and magnets to the US will be resolved as a 'fundamental' part of the framework agreement, according to Reuters. 'Also, there were a number of measures the United States of America put on when those rare earths were not coming,' Lutnick said. With Jaxson Hayes potentially on the way out in free agency, the Lakers have effectively depleted their resources of centers. To make matters worse, the team has also been torn about their position on forward Rui Hachimura. With the likelihood of Hachimura being included in trade packages, the team may very well be devoid of frontcourt depth. The factors in the Lakers' favor are that they still have the non-taxpayer MLE available to them, allowing them to potentially sign players like Clint Capela. Additionally, they also possess limited but relevant assets, giving them more flexibility with signing centers. But the larger concern now is their lack of frontcourt depth, i.e, the wings. Their interest in De'Anthony Melton could be of some benefit in this regard. But instead, we take a look at a trade proposal by Bleacher Report's Greg Swartz to help the Purple and Gold sign Utah Jazz star Lauri Markkanen. With another proposal on the horizon, we examine how the trade impacts each team. The Lakers Acquire A Bona Fide All-Star The acquisition of Lauri Markkanen could potentially reset the roster situation for the Lakers. At 7'0", Markkanen is a legitimate big man. Although he isn't a center by any means, he is a gifted forward, capable of spacing the floor and creating shots for himself. Advertisement Markkanen showed a lot of potential for developing into a star-caliber player during his early years in Chicago. This became a reality during the 2022-23 season with the Jazz when he earned his first All-Star nomination. He averaged 25.6 points and 8.6 rebounds that season while shooting 49.9% from the field and 39.1% from beyond the arc. Although the 28-year-old has been an inconsistent presence on the floor since, owing to injuries, he remains a capable player. Last season, even after playing only 47 games, he recorded an average of 19.0 points and 5.9 rebounds. On the Lakers, Markkanen would be a natural fit next to Luka Doncic and LeBron James. As mentioned, he doesn't slot in as a center, hence the need for a lob threat will still need to be addressed. However, acquiring a third star would give the Purple and Gold a massive offensive boost. In a system where he isn't the primary focus for defenders, Markkanen is capable of producing in a significant capacity. This move is also beneficial as he effectively becomes the replacement for Hachimura. While he may not be able to contribute in the same capacity on defense, he brings a very legitimate upside on the offensive front. The Utah Jazz Continue Their Rebuild The Utah Jazz were the worst team in the West last season. While this may have been a part of their strategy to tank, Utah is in no position to compete as currently constructed. Advertisement A trade of this nature simply helps the Jazz acquire necessary draft capital, with the 2031 first-round pick, and expiring contracts to facilitate moves in the following season. The likes of Maxi Kleber, Gabe Vincent, and Hachimura all fit the bill in this regard. There is a greater likelihood that the Jazz may simply trade Hachimura again to another team in the offseason. Having put an average of 13.1 points and 5.0 rebounds on 50.9% FG and 41.3% from beyond the arc, the forward would demand decent value. Trading him would allow Utah to build its reserves and potentially add young players as well. A key addition to the Jazz, however, would be young Lakers sharpshooter Dalton Knecht. The 24-year-old guard showcased a lot of potential for developing into a legitimate perimeter threat. He averaged 9.1 points and 2.8 rebounds on shooting splits of 46.1% from the field and 37.6% from beyond the arc. Given the Jazz's roster construction, Knecht may find himself in a position to play significant minutes, either as a starter or as the first choice off the bench behind Jordan Clarkson. Advertisement Potentially paired with Collin Sexton and Keyonte George, Knecht would find himself amidst Utah's project that could become relevant if nurtured. With good veteran leadership as well, the team could certainly look to improve upon last season's record. Lakers Gain Flexibility With Austin Reaves This trade proposal has its benefits for both teams, but it is quite evident that the Lakers are the real winners. While Markkanen's contributions are certainly an added advantage, it is important to address that the Purple and Gold would manage to acquire him without trading Austin Reaves in this deal. Reaves' contract has been a point of concern for the team. However, given the kind of interest he has garnered, he could help facilitate a move for a superstar. With Markkanen on the team, the Lakers gain the flexibility to reassess their approach and restructure their plans. The three cable news networks can feel good about their respective performances, especially during primetime. Fox News, MSNBC, and CNN all experienced week-to-week gains in total viewers and the Adults 25-54 demo. MSNBC and CNN recorded double-digit gains in primetime in both measured categories and had across-the-board gains during total day. President Donald Trump's feud with Elon Musk clearly played well for these two networks as they captured additional viewers during a relatively slow news period. Meanwhile, Fox News finished the week as the only network with a week-to-week decline in either of the dayparts. However, FNC still finished ahead of its cable rivals as well as the NBC and CBS broadcast networks in weekday primetime total viewers. NETWORKS: According to Nielsen Live Plus, same-day data, FNC averaged 2.378 million total viewers and 256,000 A25-54 viewers during primetime. The network saw a +4% rise in total viewers and a +7% rise in the demo compared to the week prior. Fox News averaged 1.460 million total viewers and 177,000 A25-54 viewers in total day viewing. Week-to-week it was down -1% in the former category, but up +1% in the latter. FNC moved back to first place in total primetime viewers and climbed from fourth to third in the primetime demo among all basic cable networks. In total day, it remained No. 1 in total viewers and climbed from No. 3 to No. 2 the demo demo. MSNBC's primetime lineup averaged 965,000 total viewers and 92,000 viewers in the A25-54 demo for respective gains of +34% and +42% in both measured categories. During total day, MSNBC averaged 584,000 total viewers and 57,000 demo viewers for respective gains of +16% and +21% relative to the prior week. Among all basic cable networks, MSNBC jumped from fifth to third in total primetime viewers and climbed from No. 24 to No. 16 in the demo. During total day, it landed in second place in total viewers and 12th place in the demo. CNN averaged 619,000 total viewers and 108,000 A25-54 viewers during primetime for gains of +66% in the former category and +77% in the latter. The network's live airing of George Clooney's Tony-nominated play Good Night, and Good Luck on June 7 provided a boost, bringing in 2.011 million total viewers and 223,000 demo viewers. In total day, the network averaged 391,000 total viewers and 66,000 demo viewers for respective gains of +27% and +35% in those measured categories. In relation to all the cable networks, CNN climbed from 14th to fifth place, and jumped from No. 27 to No. 9 in the demo. It moved sixth to fifth place during total day, and leaped from No. 16 to No. 8 in the demo. When looking at these networks' performance during the same period a year ago (the week of June 3): During primetime, Fox News increased +11% in total viewers and +19% in the demo. During total day, the network saw gains of +12% in total viewers and +21% in the demo. MSNBC dropped by -17% in total viewers and -19% in the demo. During total day, the network was down -23% in total viewers and -27% in the demo. In primetime, CNN jumped by +28% in total viewers and +23% in the demo. PROGRAMMING: Fox News held 14 out of the Top 15 spots of the most-watched cable news shows of the week in total viewers, with The Five (3.432 million viewers at 5 p.m. ET) leading the way.
