Six arrested in immigration raid on Glasgow restaurants and takeaways
Four men and two women were arrested in a crackdown in illegal working. Businesses were also issued with civil penalty referral notices.
Six people have been arrested by immigration enforcement officers as part of a crackdown on illegal working in the Glasgow area.
Officers from Scotland's Immigration, Compliance and Enforcement (ICE) Team acting on intelligence visited five restaurants and fast food premises in an operation on Thursday evening.
The Home Office said four men and two women were arrested for allegedly having no right to work in the UK and overstaying their visas.
Five of those arrested have been placed on strict immigration bail and are required to report regularly to the Home Office, while one has been detained pending their removal from the UK, it said.
Those arrested included Indian, Iraqi, Colombian, Spanish and Portuguese nationals.
All five premises were issued with civil penalty referral notices and the employers could face a fine if found liable, the Home Office said.
Lynne Davidson, HM Inspector, Scotland ICE Team, said: 'There is no excuse for ignoring employment and immigration rules and those who do should be in no doubt that they will face the full consequences.
'Businesses have a legal requirement to carry out right to work checks on employees and we will continue to pursue unscrupulous employers and those who break immigration laws.'
The Home Office said that in many cases people travelling to the UK are lied to by smuggling gangs who say they will be able to live and work freely when in reality they often have to work inhumane hours, and endure squalid living conditions and minimal pay.

'That's why we are clamping down on those who abuse our system and going after organised criminals who sell false promises to migrants about their ability to live and work in the UK.
'This operation is just one example of the continuous targeted action we're taking right across the UK to hold rogue employers accountable and finally restore fairness and integrity to our immigration system.'

Mike Rydings died after he was brutally attacked in a bar in Benidorm, with his family now pleading for any answers that can help them finally get some closure A beloved dad died after he was viciously assaulted during a lads "trip of a lifetime" to Benidorm, with his family still scrambling to find answers. Mike Rydings, then 47, travelled to the Spanish resort town of Benidorm for a lads holiday and had been watching the 2018 World Cup when he was attacked by a group of five or six men in the early hours of June 23. The builder from Wythenshawe suffered a broken nose and fell to the ground, hitting his head and sustained horrific injuries. He spent a month unconscious in hospital with his daughter and sister Nicola flying to be with him as he was hooked up to ventilator machines and fighting for his life. After he returned to the UK, Mike was taken to Salford Royal Hospital and spent a year of his life in a vegetative state. He required around the clock care and was unable to move or speak before his death in August 2019, aged just 48. Mike's killers have never been found. There are no witness accounts and police enquiries turned up no suspects. Speaking on what would have been Mike's 54th birthday, his daughter Hayley said the family spent years "unable to have closure without answers" as they issued another desperate appeal for information. "You can't ever really move on, because you don't have any answers," Hayley told Manchester Evening News. "It's been years and we haven't been told anything. "At the time, there were so many different witness stories. At one point we were told it was a stag party and someone in camouflage clothing. Then we were told it was a bouncer. "One stated that, the night he was attacked, my dad had a drink and was seen backing off with his hands in the air when he was punched to the nose, which broke, and then he fell backwards onto his head. They said they have never been able to get the sound of him hitting the ground out of their head." Mike had been with a group of friends in Benidorm when the lifelong Manchester United fan became separated in the Hippodrome Bar. He then became involved in a dispute with another group which ended with him being knocked to the ground and suffering catastrophic head injuries. Spanish police concluded their investigation without prosecuting anyone. As part of the investigations carried out by Greater Manchester Police, detectives interviewed more than 15 English tourists who were out on the night of the attack. Detectives were able to establish the man suspected of assaulting Mike was a white man aged in his 20s or 30s with a larger than average build, about 5ft 7ins to 6ft tall, who was possibly wearing camouflage clothing. Hayley, 36, added: "My dad's partner at the time got the call from one of his friends to tell her what had happened. When you hear that, you still never think it will be as bad as what we walked into. "When I first saw him in the hospital and he was lying there with tubes everywhere it was so painful I had to walk back out. "I was pregnant with one of my daughters, and I flew out the next day with my partner. Between me and Nicola his sister we kept going back and forth to make sure he was never on his own. It was so hard on us all. I had a young child at the time too, so it was really difficult." Chilling new Madeleine McCann theory puts UK man at centre amid drink drive claims
The newspaper said the British sister of the unnamed man at the centre of the new theory tipped off police in the UK in 2018. Following fresh searches in Portugal for Madeleine McCann, a British man is now at the centre of a new theory after being reportedly overheard saying five chilling words by a witness the day after the tot went missing. It was revealed on June 6 that German prosecutors refused to investigate a couple who claimed to have hit Madeleine in a drink-driving accident. The tot vanished on holiday in Portugal on May 3, 2007. According to Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manhã, Portuguese authorities demanded action after receiving a chilling tip-off from a British woman who believed her own brother and his German wife may be hiding the truth about Madeleine's disappearance, reports the Mirror. Investigators in Portugal asked German officials for permission to deploy an undercover officer with a fake identity to get close to the wife - suspected of being behind the wheel of the car that allegedly struck Madeleine, but German authorities reportedly shut the request down. The newspaper said the British sister of the unnamed man at the centre of the new theory tipped off police in the UK in 2018. 'German prosecutors were asked to authorise a covert police operation with someone posing as a friend of the woman's and trying to get her to confess, but the courts refused,' it added. 'It was decided to continue solely with the investigation into suspect Christian Brueckner, rejecting other possibilities.' Describing the mystery couple as 'alcoholics' and placing the British man's wife in a café near the Ocean Club where she had been 'drinking' the night Madeleine went missing from the Algarve resort. Correio da Manha also reported another witness described as the couple's neighbour told police separately she heard the couple rowing the day after the three-year-old disappeared. She said she heard the man repeatedly yelling: 'Why did you bring her?' Portuguese police claim they were shut down by the Germans after urging them to look more closely into the possibility the woman had driven home 'drunk' with Madeleine after hitting her. She said her brother was an alcoholic and since the day Madeleine vanished had appeared to hide a painful secret. 'When British police exchanged information with the PJ, a coincidence was discovered. On May 4 2007 a woman told police she had heard her neighbours arguing. They were both alcoholics, he was English and she was German, and she heard the man shouting repeatedly: 'Why did you bring her?' 'The neighbour discovered afterwards it was the man whose sister had reported him to police and was married to the woman who had been drinking in a café next to the Ocean Club where little Madeleine was staying with her parents and twin siblings. 'Another report the police had indicated that in an identical car to the one the woman was then using, around the time of Madeleine's disappearance, a female and little girl had been seen inside. The PJ concluded she could have run Madeleine over and panicked.' The newspaper also claimed the mystery British man had always 'refused to tell his sister if he had been involved in Madeleine's death' before she alerted the authorities. Portuguese police are yet to respond to the Correio da Manha newspaper report. German police yesterday wrapped up a three-day search on the ground near prime suspect Christian Brueckner's old cottage home close to Praia da Luz where Madeleine disappeared on May 3, 2007.

Killer battered female prison guard after being dropped as goalie for jail football team
A murderer kicked off behind bars after he was banned from playing goalkeeper in a prison team. Samuel Petto, 45, claimed he attacked guard Tara Jackson after being red-carded from his role in the closed doors kick-about. He lunged towards Miss Jackson who had gone to his cell with nurses amid fears he had taken illicit substances. Petto appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court and admitted targeting her at maximum security HMP Shotts, Lanarkshire. Fellow killers Mohamud Mohamud, 41, and Paul Watson, 39, also appeared to admit assaulting staff at the prison between May and October last year. Depute fiscal Jack Muir told the court Petto had become volatile in his cell. He said: "Prison officers attended at the cell of the accused along with NHS staff to check on the accused who was believed to be under the influence. "The complainer Jackson and another officer entered the cell and he became aggressive towards them and lunged towards the complainer and grabbed her by the belt and shirt. "The accused thereafter began to punch the prison officer on her face and head area and then pulled her to the ground which caused other staff to enter which allowed the complainer to leave the cell. "She suffered bruising on her left eye and the back of her head, pain and limpness to the right knee, cuts to her head and neck area and swelling to her right hand and wrist." Petto, who represented himself in court, claimed he had become angry after being told he was not allowed to play football. He said: "I'd organised the football and they were getting people for football but said I wasn't going. So I started shouting trying to get my door open so I could go and play because I'm the goalie. "They came back with nurses saying I was under the influence but I wasn't taking drugs. I just wanted to get to the football and then they all grabbed me and were trying to pull me by the head and that was when the other screws came in and this melee happened. Watson lashed out at Miss Jackson in a separate incident while Mohamud assaulted guard Michael Corrigan during a trip to University Hospital Wishaw. Lorna Clark, defending Mohamud and Watson, said they had struggled with addiction behind bars and had no recollection of the incidents. Sheriff Louise Gallacher handed Petto a year while Mohamud and Watson were given six months. All were told the sentences would run alongside their current terms for murder. Petto murdered a woman in an explosion which he caused to cover up the killing of a flatmate in March 2003 and was jailed for a minimum of 18 years. Machine gun killer Mohamud, who previously boasted about having two X-Boxes in his cell, was jailed for 25 years after killing a drug gang rival in Edinburgh in 2013. Watson was jailed for 20 years after being convicted of murdering a man with a pitchfork and knife in 2014.
