Kids at Cole Harbour hockey camp get surprise visit from NHL superstar

Yahoo5 days ago
When Nathan MacKinnon returned to his old stomping grounds at Cole Harbour Place on Friday to speak to kids attending a hockey camp in his hometown, he received a hero's welcome.
"It was fun and exciting," says 10-year-old camper Rosie Tanner, who plays hockey for the Metro East Inferno during the school year. "He told us about hockey and how he played for the Colorado Avalanche."
For her and the other boys and girls — all ages 5-12 — enrolled at the fifth annual Cole Harbour Hockey School, the 29-year-old MacKinnon needed no introduction.
In the last two decades, Cole Harbour, a suburban community in the Halifax Regional Municipality, has developed a reputation as a hockey haven. It's home to MacKinnon and Sidney Crosby, two of the brightest stars on Team Canada and in the NHL.
The kids at camp, the oldest born in 2013, have never known a world where that wasn't the case.
To them, both players are proof that you can grow up in Cole Harbour and go on to be one of the best hockey players in the world.
"I think it's great motivation for the young kids in our community that everyone wants to be the next one … but it's always hard," said Jon Greenwood, the camp's director and lead instructor. "We'll be lucky if we ever have another one."
Greenwood, who also grew up in Cole Harbour, coached MacKinnon in peewees, around the same age as the oldest kids at the camp.
"It's hard to say at that age, 'Oh this is going to be an NHL superstar,' but we certainly knew the tools were there, and most importantly … the drive and competitiveness were there to continue," said Greenwood. "He's never stopped surprising us."
The camp launched with 94 players in 2021 and has since grown to accommodate 160 kids. It now regularly fills up when registration launches each year, said Greenwood.
For campers, it's a week to learn new skills and meet friends, on and off the ice.
Tanner, who plays defence, and likes "stopping people from scoring or going on breakaways," said she enjoyed getting to train on dry land, work on her shooting, and practise her shooting skills.
Her favourite things about the week were "learning new things about hockey and making new friends."
But her mother admits the camp can set a high bar for others to follow.
"When she went the very first time, the week after she had Mitch's Soccer Camp, and she goes … 'Do you think Messi is going to be there?'" said Hanneke Tanner-van Gelderen.
You don't, after all, get to meet your heroes at every summer camp.
Greenwood said MacKinnon will usually drop by the school if he's in town, but there's no guarantees.
If he does make it, as he did this year, it's a nice surprise.
"Everybody left with a nice group picture and an autographed picture of him," he said. "It's a pretty exciting finish for the week."

Mark Casse-Trained Quintet Seek Classic Glory In Woodbine Oaks

Mark Casse-Trained Quintet Seek Classic Glory In Woodbine Oaks originally appeared on Paulick Report. Twelve fillies, including five Mark Casse trainees, will vie for top prize in the $500,000 Woodbine Oaks Presented by Stella Artois, one of four stakes on Sunday's 10-race card at Woodbine. Inaugurated in 1956, the filly classic, for Canadian-foaled 3-year-old fillies carrying 121 pounds over 1 ⅛ miles on the main track, will go postward at 5:20 p.m. ET, and will be broadcast live, along with the Plate Trial, on Sportsnet One from 4:30-5:30 p.m. ET. The winning connections will receive $300,000. Sunday's card also features the $150,000 Plate Trial Stakes, a key race ahead of The King's Plate (Aug. 16), the $200,000 Canadian Stakes Presented by Japan Racing Association (G2T), and the $175,000 bet365 Connaught Cup (G2T).Dual Hall of Fame trainer Mark Casse will send out the quintet of Ella It Is, No Time, Shifty, War Signal, and It Is, 2-2-0 from eight starts ($86,298 in purse earnings), will make her fifth career stakes appearance when she goes postward on Sunday. The daughter of Point of Entry out of the Silent Name (JPN) mare Our Ella finished second in both the Victorian Queen and South Ocean last year, and was seventh, albeit just 3 ½ lengths behind the winner, in the 2024 running of the Princess Elizabeth It Is debuted last July and finished seventh but rebounded with a smart two-length score in a 6 ½-furlong main track race, also at the Toronto oval, that was originally scheduled for the bay, who notched a sharp 3 ¾-length win at 1 1/16 miles on the Woodbine main track on June 1, heads into the Oaks off a seventh in the Selene Stakes (G3) on June 28.'She has shown she can run well,' said Casse. 'She has to step up her game now. This will be a test for her. She is really only one of my fillies in this race who can settle.'René and Darlene Hunderup (Heste Sport Inc.) bred and own Ella It Is. Working out of their home base, Norse Ridge Farms, in King, Ontario, northeast of Woodbine, the couple has enjoyed great success over the years as breeders and owners of Thoroughbreds and Quarter Parris is the groom. No Time, a daughter of Not This Time out of the Red Ransom mare Count to Three, arrives at the Oaks off a fourth in the Selene (G3).One race prior, on June 1 at Woodbine, the dark bay ran unfettered on the lead as the 5-2 choice in a 1 1/16-mile main track race and crossed the wire four lengths clear of her nearest rival in 1:44.24.'I think No Time is a sleeper,' said Casse, of the filly who has amassed $105,473 in purse earnings. 'I think she has a very good pedigree – both her and Shifty have very nice pedigrees. She is not easy to ride. She is another one that if she is happy, she is going to be tough. Johnny Velazquez is going to ride her for us.'Steadied sharply in her career bow last August when she was eighth, No Time won next time out in a 1 1/16-mile turf race on September brings a record of 2-0-1 from seven starts into her fourth stakes (fourth, elevated to third, in the Cup & Saucer, eighth in the Mazarine (G3), both last year) by James Everatt, Janeane Everatt, and Arika Everatt-Meeuse, No Time was a $250,000 purchase at the 2023 Fasig-Tipton New York Saratoga Select Yearling Parris is the groom. Shifty, owned by D.J. Stable LLC, debuted on the E.P. Taylor on July 4, 2024, and showed late energy to finish fifth in a field of seven after breaking seven career starts, she sports a 2-0-2 mark ($152,037 in purse earnings), highlighted by an impressive 3 ¼-length win in the 2024 Catch A Glimpse Stakes. Sent off at 11-1, the bay filly drew off with authority to secure her first stakes winning her 3-year-old debut on May 11, Shifty was third in the seven-furlong Fury Stakes, for 3-year-old fillies foaled in Canada, on June 7.'Shifty is probably the most talented [of the group],' said Casse. 'She has her quirks. If she can settle and get into a good rhythm, she will be tough. She's very talented.'By Medaglia d'Oro out of the Elusive Quality mare Elusive Luci, Shifty was bred by Anderson Farm Ontario Inc. and sold for $350,000 at the 2023 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky sale. Bred and owned by Gary Barber, War Signal is 2-0-1 from six starts, accompanied by $98,527 in purse earnings. Fourth in her debut last May, she finished third in the Shady Well Stakes on November broke her maiden in her third start, a dominant 4 ¼-length victory at one mile and 70 yards over the Woodbine main track on December Signal made it two straight winner's circle trips when she posted a 2 ¼-length victory in her 3-year-old debut. Sent on her way as the 6-5 choice, she covered 1 mile and 70 yards over the Gulfstream all-weather surface in 1: bay was seventh in the seven-furlong Ruling Angel Stakes on May 1 at Woodbine and sixth, just two lengths behind the winner Mansetti, when she took on the boys in the 1 1/16-mile Marine Stakes (G3) on June 28.'She ran well in the Marine,' said Casse. 'It was against colts, and I thought she hung in there. She is a horse who I would have said this winter was our best chance to win the Oaks. She disappointed me a little bit in the Ruling Angel, but her race in the Marine was pretty good. She is another one who likes to be up close to the lead.' After a fifth in the Star Shoot Stakes on April 26 to start her sophomore season, Winterberry was back on the winning track courtesy of a strong showing in the had a winning debut last August, a 5 ½-length victory at 6 ½ furlongs over the Woodbine main track. Next time out, she was sixth in the G1 Summer, at 1 mile on the E.P. Taylor dark bay rebounded with a three-quarter length score in the seven-furlong Glorious Song Stakes on October 13 and closed out her rookie campaign with a fifth in the six-furlong Shady Well Stakes on November a daughter of Frosted out of the Bellamy Road mare Dreams Are Free, brings a record of 3-0-0 from six starts into the Oaks.'She is interesting in that we thought all along that she was a sprinter,' said Casse, of the filly with $168,030 in purse earnings. 'But she has really matured. She was scratched twice before she ever ran because of her antics. I talked to Patrick (jockey, Husbands) the other day after he worked her, and he told me that she is a different horse. I know that he is excited about her running.'Winterberry may keep going. She is coming into the Oaks better than ever. I am still not 100 percent sure she can get the mile and an eighth, but she is very talented.'Bred in Ontario by Anderson Farms Ont. Inc., Winterberry was a $210,000 purchase at the 2023 Keeneland Association September Yearling 'Billy' Forde is the groom. Casse has won the Oaks on four occasions, one shy of the record held by Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame inductee Jim Day.'With all our fillies, the question is the mile and an eighth,' said Casse, whose latest victory in the race came in 2023 with Elysian Field. 'It's going to be how they settle early. If any of them settle, they are going to run well – they are going to be tough.'Every rider is going to do their own thing. I am not giving any instructions. I think the break is going to be very important, and how each rider can get their horse to settle going into the first turn.'Aristella, last year's Princess Elizabeth Stakes winner, stakes placed Crystal Visions, maiden D'aurum, Innisfree Isle, who broke her maiden last time out, multiple stakes placed Nata Trouble, R Canadian Apple, third in her debut, and Reveler's Row, a first-time out winner, round out the field. The Woodbine Oaks is the first leg of the Canadian Triple Tiara, which continues at the Toronto oval with the 1 1/16-mile, $250,000 Bison City Stakes on August 9 and concludes with the $250,000 Wonder Where Stakes at 1 1/16 miles over the Woodbine inner turf on September 6. First post for Sunday is 1:05 p.m. The wagering menu for the Woodbine Oaks includes Rolling Double, Exacta, 0.20 Trifecta, 0.20 Superfecta, and $1 Swinger. Well-rested Winnipeg Blue Bombers to welcome Calgary Stampeders

WINNIPEG — The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have been waiting a long time for their chance to exact revenge after their worst loss of the season. After the Stampeders stomped them 37-16 two weeks ago in Calgary, the Bombers have had to stew over the lopsided defeat through their bye week. They will finally get the opportunity for vengeance Friday night. 'We've had a long time to think about our mistakes and what we want to do differently,' said Bombers defensive back Evan Holm. 'It was nice to get away from football, but we got to watch a lot of film and see what they wanted to do and have answers.' Winnipeg rush end Willie Jefferson relished the idea of playing the Stampeders again so soon after being dominated last time out. 'After a loss, you always say, 'I want to play them again,' and we have the opportunity to play them the next game,' he said. 'They were at home, they had their crowd into it. They had a nice environment. Now, they get to come to Winnipeg, to Princess Auto Stadium in front of 30,000-plus and play us. We play really (well) in front of our fans, so we need to get that swing.' The Bombers have had two weeks to study film of both that loss and Calgary's victory over the Saskatchewan Roughriders last weekend. 'They're playing really great football right now,' said Winnipeg offensive lineman Pat Neufeld. 'They're playing really confident football. We're going to have our hands full, but we're always up for a challenge, especially at home.' That challenge will be even tougher as the Bombers will be missing star receiver Dalton Schoen, who was placed on the six-game injury list, and perennial all-star offensive lineman Stanley Bryant. They will be replaced by speedy Kody Case at receiver and Micah Vanterpool on the O-line. They will also be up against what is currently the best defence in the CFL. 'It's a great challenge for us,' said Winnipeg quarterback Zach Collaros. 'They've played exceptionally well the entire season. They've given up five touchdowns throughout the entire year. Their scheme is sound. They play it very well.' Bombers head coach Mike O'Shea concurred. 'It seems like they're flying around,' he said. 'They're bringing a lot of energy, they're taking the ball away. Obviously, they took the ball away from us (two interceptions returned for touchdowns). When you see them put it all together as a 12-man unit, they seem to be getting after it pretty good.' Even Calgary head coach/GM Dave Dickenson seemed a little surprised that his defence has improved so quickly from last season. 'It's a completely different group,' he said. 'I actually thought it might take some time to jell. There was a little bit of the element of surprise because we knew what we were going to run and what kind of type of defence, and that certainly helped us. 'The turnovers are the biggest thing as far as helping our offence. I think we've had three pick-sixes and when you get the ball and score with it, that's pretty nice.' Calgary quarterback Vernon Adams, Jr., is expecting a battle. 'Of course, they're hungry,' he said. 'They're coming off a bye, a sold-out crowd. This is their home stadium … Winnipeg's going to come out with their best shot. It's going to be loud. It's going to be fun.' CALGARY STAMPEDERS (4-1) at WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS (3-1) at Princess Auto Stadium, Friday, 8:30 p.m. ET HOMETOWN ADVANTAGE Winnipeg is 39-6 at home since 2019 … The Bombers are 12-0 coming off a bye week. ROAD WARRIORS The Stampeders have won three straight road games, all by at least 10 points. WELCOME BACK MILT Bombers legend Milt Stegall will return to the TSN panel Friday night after taking time off following the sudden death of his son, Chase. 'There are no words to even talk about what happened to him and his family and obviously, as Bombers, we put our hearts out to him,' Neufeld said. 'It takes a lot of courage to come back to work and get in front of a lot of people on TV and this crowd. Everyone here loves him, and we can't wait to see him.' Maple Leafs And Dakota Joshua Reunite After Trade With Canucks

The Toronto Maple Leafs improved their forward depth by trading for left winger Dakota Joshua from the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday. In return, the Canucks got a fourth-round pick in the 2028 NHL draft. In 57 games this past season, Joshua recorded seven goals and seven assists for 14 points, along with 193 hits. He missed the beginning of the season recovering from a procedure that removed a tumor that was diagnosed as testicular cancer. In 2023-24, Joshua scored 18 goals, 14 assists and 32 points, all career highs. His 244 hits that season led the team and were the ninth-most in the NHL. The 29-year-old center carries a $3.25 million cap hit and is under contract for the next three seasons. Toronto now has $2.083 million in salary cap space, according to PuckPedia. This is a reunion for Joshua and the Maple Leafs. He was originally selected 128th overall by the organization in the 2014 NHL draft. Toronto traded him to the St. Louis Blues for future considerations in 2019 before Joshua played his first NHL game. Joshua has played parts of five NHL seasons, including two with the Blues and three with the Canucks. In 241 career games, he's scored 40 goals and 78 points. He also has some solid playoff numbers, including four goals and four helpers in 13 contests in 2023-24. He was tied for third on the Canucks in goals while averaging 15:49 of ice time in those playoffs, when they lost in Game 7 of the second round to the Edmonton Oilers. This marks the third top-nine forward Treliving has acquired in this off-season. The others include Matias Maccelli, who was acquired for a 2027 conditional third-round pick from the Utah Mammoth, and Nicolas Roy, who was the return from the Vegas Golden Knights for the signing rights of Mitch Marner. Joshua, Roy and Maccelli earn between $3 million and $3.5 million against the cap and spread out Toronto's forward depth following Marner's departure.
