Kids at Cole Harbour hockey camp get surprise visit from NHL superstar
"It was fun and exciting," says 10-year-old camper Rosie Tanner, who plays hockey for the Metro East Inferno during the school year. "He told us about hockey and how he played for the Colorado Avalanche."
For her and the other boys and girls — all ages 5-12 — enrolled at the fifth annual Cole Harbour Hockey School, the 29-year-old MacKinnon needed no introduction.
In the last two decades, Cole Harbour, a suburban community in the Halifax Regional Municipality, has developed a reputation as a hockey haven. It's home to MacKinnon and Sidney Crosby, two of the brightest stars on Team Canada and in the NHL.
The kids at camp, the oldest born in 2013, have never known a world where that wasn't the case.
To them, both players are proof that you can grow up in Cole Harbour and go on to be one of the best hockey players in the world.
"I think it's great motivation for the young kids in our community that everyone wants to be the next one … but it's always hard," said Jon Greenwood, the camp's director and lead instructor. "We'll be lucky if we ever have another one."
Greenwood, who also grew up in Cole Harbour, coached MacKinnon in peewees, around the same age as the oldest kids at the camp.
"It's hard to say at that age, 'Oh this is going to be an NHL superstar,' but we certainly knew the tools were there, and most importantly … the drive and competitiveness were there to continue," said Greenwood. "He's never stopped surprising us."
The camp launched with 94 players in 2021 and has since grown to accommodate 160 kids. It now regularly fills up when registration launches each year, said Greenwood.
For campers, it's a week to learn new skills and meet friends, on and off the ice.
Tanner, who plays defence, and likes "stopping people from scoring or going on breakaways," said she enjoyed getting to train on dry land, work on her shooting, and practise her shooting skills.
Her favourite things about the week were "learning new things about hockey and making new friends."
But her mother admits the camp can set a high bar for others to follow.
"When she went the very first time, the week after she had Mitch's Soccer Camp, and she goes … 'Do you think Messi is going to be there?'" said Hanneke Tanner-van Gelderen.
You don't, after all, get to meet your heroes at every summer camp.
Greenwood said MacKinnon will usually drop by the school if he's in town, but there's no guarantees.
If he does make it, as he did this year, it's a nice surprise.
"Everybody left with a nice group picture and an autographed picture of him," he said. "It's a pretty exciting finish for the week."

Well-rested Winnipeg Blue Bombers to welcome Calgary Stampeders
WINNIPEG — The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have been waiting a long time for their chance to exact revenge after their worst loss of the season. After the Stampeders stomped them 37-16 two weeks ago in Calgary, the Bombers have had to stew over the lopsided defeat through their bye week. They will finally get the opportunity for vengeance Friday night. 'We've had a long time to think about our mistakes and what we want to do differently,' said Bombers defensive back Evan Holm. 'It was nice to get away from football, but we got to watch a lot of film and see what they wanted to do and have answers.' Winnipeg rush end Willie Jefferson relished the idea of playing the Stampeders again so soon after being dominated last time out. 'After a loss, you always say, 'I want to play them again,' and we have the opportunity to play them the next game,' he said. 'They were at home, they had their crowd into it. They had a nice environment. Now, they get to come to Winnipeg, to Princess Auto Stadium in front of 30,000-plus and play us. We play really (well) in front of our fans, so we need to get that swing.' The Bombers have had two weeks to study film of both that loss and Calgary's victory over the Saskatchewan Roughriders last weekend. 'They're playing really great football right now,' said Winnipeg offensive lineman Pat Neufeld. 'They're playing really confident football. We're going to have our hands full, but we're always up for a challenge, especially at home.' That challenge will be even tougher as the Bombers will be missing star receiver Dalton Schoen, who was placed on the six-game injury list, and perennial all-star offensive lineman Stanley Bryant. They will be replaced by speedy Kody Case at receiver and Micah Vanterpool on the O-line. They will also be up against what is currently the best defence in the CFL. 'It's a great challenge for us,' said Winnipeg quarterback Zach Collaros. 'They've played exceptionally well the entire season. They've given up five touchdowns throughout the entire year. Their scheme is sound. They play it very well.' Bombers head coach Mike O'Shea concurred. 'It seems like they're flying around,' he said. 'They're bringing a lot of energy, they're taking the ball away. Obviously, they took the ball away from us (two interceptions returned for touchdowns). When you see them put it all together as a 12-man unit, they seem to be getting after it pretty good.' Even Calgary head coach/GM Dave Dickenson seemed a little surprised that his defence has improved so quickly from last season. 'It's a completely different group,' he said. 'I actually thought it might take some time to jell. There was a little bit of the element of surprise because we knew what we were going to run and what kind of type of defence, and that certainly helped us. 'The turnovers are the biggest thing as far as helping our offence. I think we've had three pick-sixes and when you get the ball and score with it, that's pretty nice.' Calgary quarterback Vernon Adams, Jr., is expecting a battle. 'Of course, they're hungry,' he said. 'They're coming off a bye, a sold-out crowd. This is their home stadium … Winnipeg's going to come out with their best shot. It's going to be loud. It's going to be fun.' Maple Leafs And Dakota Joshua Reunite After Trade With Canucks
The Toronto Maple Leafs improved their forward depth by trading for left winger Dakota Joshua from the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday. In return, the Canucks got a fourth-round pick in the 2028 NHL draft. In 57 games this past season, Joshua recorded seven goals and seven assists for 14 points, along with 193 hits. He missed the beginning of the season recovering from a procedure that removed a tumor that was diagnosed as testicular cancer. In 2023-24, Joshua scored 18 goals, 14 assists and 32 points, all career highs. His 244 hits that season led the team and were the ninth-most in the NHL. The 29-year-old center carries a $3.25 million cap hit and is under contract for the next three seasons. Toronto now has $2.083 million in salary cap space, according to PuckPedia. This is a reunion for Joshua and the Maple Leafs. He was originally selected 128th overall by the organization in the 2014 NHL draft. Toronto traded him to the St. Louis Blues for future considerations in 2019 before Joshua played his first NHL game. Joshua has played parts of five NHL seasons, including two with the Blues and three with the Canucks. In 241 career games, he's scored 40 goals and 78 points. He also has some solid playoff numbers, including four goals and four helpers in 13 contests in 2023-24. He was tied for third on the Canucks in goals while averaging 15:49 of ice time in those playoffs, when they lost in Game 7 of the second round to the Edmonton Oilers. This marks the third top-nine forward Treliving has acquired in this off-season. The others include Matias Maccelli, who was acquired for a 2027 conditional third-round pick from the Utah Mammoth, and Nicolas Roy, who was the return from the Vegas Golden Knights for the signing rights of Mitch Marner. Joshua, Roy and Maccelli earn between $3 million and $3.5 million against the cap and spread out Toronto's forward depth following Marner's departure.
