Tian Chua gives ‘Turun Anwar' rally a miss

Tian Chua said he will not attend today's rally but respects the people's right to assemble.
PETALING JAYA : Former PKR vice-president Tian Chua will not be attending the anti-Anwar Ibrahim rally at Dataran Merdeka, despite his name being included in the programme.
According to the programme shared by an opposition leader, the former Batu MP was scheduled to arrive at 3.15pm.
Tian Chua told FMT the organisers invited him to attend the rally on Thursday or Friday.
'But I told them I couldn't attend because I won't be in town. Maybe, by that time, they may have already printed the programme,' he said.
He also said he told the organisers he respected their right to assemble.
Tian Chua, a staunch supporter of Anwar Ibrahim after Anwar was sacked as deputy prime minister in 1998, was sacked from the party in 2023.
The decision came after he contested the Batu parliamentary seat as an independent candidate in the 15th general election.
According to the programme for the rally, former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and PN chairman Muhyiddin Yassin will be present at the event, aimed at calling for Anwar's resignation as the prime minister.

PUTRAJAYA: (Bernama) Malaysia will host the Asean Day Celebration in conjunction with the 58th anniversary of the founding of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) Friday (Aug 8). In a statement on Thursday (Aug 7), the Foreign Ministry said the celebration, themed "Towards an Inclusive and Sustainable Asean Future', aligns with and reinforces Malaysia's Asean Chairmanship theme of "Inclusivity and Sustainability'. The event will be held at the Cyber Event Hall in Cyberjaya and is expected to gather over 700 guests from across the Asean community. "This year's celebration provides a timely opportunity to showcase Asean's progress and unity, while highlighting Malaysia's leadership in promoting a people-centred and forward-looking regional agenda,' the ministry said. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is scheduled to officiate the celebration. Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan will also be in attendance. The celebration will feature cultural performances by the National Department of Culture and Arts (Permata Seni), showcasing traditional folk dances and choir performances that reflect the region's cultural diversity. Asean Member States will also showcase their traditional arts, handicrafts and merchandise through national exhibition booths. The ministry said the celebration symbolises Asean's collective commitment to regional cooperation, solidarity and peace, and affirms Malaysia's commitment, as Asean Chair, to bring Asean closer to the people and to lead the region towards a more inclusive and sustainable future. - Bernama

MCMC to record Muhyiddin's statement over RON95 subsidy claim

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission said the probe did not include claims or allegations levelled against former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission says it has contacted former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin to record his statement in its probe into a claim on the RON95 subsidy. In a statement MCMC said that Muhyiddin would be questioned as a witness. 'The focus of the probe is to confirm the context of the content that was uploaded. 'The probe does not include any claims or allegations levelled against him.' MCMC also said it would be contacting the relevant individuals to complete its probe. Yesterday, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim ordered MCMC to look into his claim that Muhyiddin had defended the distribution of government subsidies to foreigners. In a statement, the Prime Minister's Office said it acknowledged the Perikatan Nasional chairman's denial of ever making such a statement involving targeted RON95 petrol subsidy. On Tuesday, Sinar Harian quoted Anwar as saying that Muhyiddin, who is also the Bersatu president, had questioned the government for burdening foreigners when they have also made significant contributions to the country. Anwar said the government had decided on targeted subsidies for electricity and RON95 petrol so that it could continue helping Malaysians while reducing the nation's fiscal deficit. Muhyiddin later denied having made such a statement and urged Anwar to furnish proof of his claim. The former prime minister said Anwar's claim was slanderous and that his stand from the beginning was that government subsidies should be for Malaysians, not foreigners.
