Man extradited from Dubai charged with murder
A man who was extradited to the Republic of Ireland from the United Arab Emirates has been charged with murder and other charges relating to directing the activities of a criminal organisation.
Sean McGovern, 39, appeared before the Special Criminal Court in Dublin amid high security on Friday.
Appearing before three judges, Mr McGovern was charged with five offences, Irish broadcaster RTÉ has reported.
He was charged with the murder of Noel Kirwan, who was shot in Dublin in December 2016 as part of the feud between the Hutch and Kinahan criminal gangs.
He was further charged that between 20 October and 22 December 2016 he had directed activity that led to the murder of Mr Kirwan.
And a charge relating to the participation in a criminal organisation contrary to section 72 of the Criminal Justice Act.
He was also charged with two other offences, of directing the activities of a criminal organisation in relation to monitoring the activity of James Gately, and another charge of facilitating a conspiracy to murder Mr Gately.
A lawyer for Mr McGovern said he had spoken to his client about the schedule of charges and told the court that they were reserving their position in relation to the lawfulness of the arrest and the jurisdiction of the court.
Mr McGovern was arrested in the United Arab Emirates last October after an Interpol red notice was issued.
Shortly after his arrest, the Republic of Ireland finalised an agreement on an extradition treaty with the United Arab Emirates.
Mr McGovern was handed over to gardaí (Irish police) in Dubai on Wednesday.
He was transported back to Ireland in an Irish military plane on Thursday and formally arrested by police investigating the activities of the Kinahan crime gang when the aircraft landed at Casement Aerodrome in Baldonnel.
He was remanded in custody and is to appear in court next week.

Man dead and girl injured following shooting incident at Carlow shopping centre
A man has died following a shooting incident at a shopping centre in Co Carlow. The PA news agency understands that it appears that the dead man's wounds were self-inflicted. A young girl was also injured in the incident but did not require hospital care. Gardai have identified the dead man as a white Irish male. Ireland's Justice Minister Jim O'Callaghan has described it as a 'really shocking incident'. One local councillor told how people ran terrified from the shopping centre in Carlow town as shots were fired. The body of the man remains at the scene and will not be removed until the area has been declared safe. The shopping centre has been evacuated and emergency services remain at the scene, but gardai said there is no further concern for public safety. A Garda spokesperson said they were alerted to reports of a firearm discharge at Fairgreen Shopping Centre shortly after 6.15pm. The spokesperson said: 'An Garda Siochana are currently at the scene, with the shopping centre and car park cordoned off. 'The cordon will remain in place overnight. 'A white Irish adult male is deceased at the scene. 'The Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team has been requested to attend.' The spokesperson added: 'A female juvenile received treatment from paramedics following the incident but did not require hospital care. 'It's undetermined at this time as to how those injuries were sustained.' Gardai have asked that anyone who may have recorded footage of the incident not share it on social media platforms or messaging apps, but instead provide it to Carlow Garda Station. Anyone with information is asked to contact Carlow Garda Station at 059-9136620 or the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111. Investigations are ongoing. Ireland's deputy premier, Simon Harris, said he was 'deeply concerned' to hear about the incident and was being kept briefed. Mr Harris said: 'I understand a young child has been hurt and I join with people across our country in thinking of them and their family tonight. 'I am also thinking of all those who witnessed this situation and the awful shock and upset it must have caused them. 'I know their families and communities will rally to support them. 'I am grateful to our emergency services for their work and response.' The Tanaiste added: 'This is a live Garda Investigation with the support of members of the Army Bomb Disposal Unit. 'I have been in touch with the chief of staff of the Defence Forces, Lieutenant General Rossa Mulcahy, in relation to this incident and the assistance our Defence Forces are providing. 'It's important now that our Gardai can carry out this investigation thoroughly.' Mr O'Callaghan said: 'This was a really shocking incident. 'My thoughts are with everyone affected by the shooting and the community and families impacted, including those working at the scene. 'I would appeal to anyone who has any information to speak to the gardai and help with their investigations in any way that they can.' He added: 'This is something we never want or expect to happen in our communities. 'Gun violence is very rare in Ireland, and I am determined that will remain the case. 'The area in Carlow is safe. 'We must now allow An Garda Siochana to investigate this incident fully.' Local Fine Gael councillor Fergal Browne said people in the town had been left terrified He said: 'I think it is all under control now, it seems the worst is over. 'People were obviously terrified, a bank holiday Sunday, going into town to do their shopping. 'People ran from the centre crying and upset. 'There was a bunch of foreign students in the area, who could not believe they were caught up in the middle of all of it. 'It's a busy spot. We launched a photographic exhibition there on Friday night in the shopping centre.' Mr Browne added: 'There is lots of activity in the centre between people shopping and people working there, exhibitions. 'You could not make it up. It's very upsetting for everyone who was involved in it or who witnessed it. 'I was down there in the last hour and it seems to have calmed down a good bit now.' Mr Browne said he wanted to thank all of the emergency services who had attended the scene.

Man United came close to signing Evan Ferguson in January
Manchester United launched a 'dramatic late approach' to sign Brighton & Hove Albion striker Evan Ferguson in the January transfer window, according to a report. Ferguson, 20, has endured a frustrating time at the Amex Stadium in recent years after bursting onto the scene as the Seagulls' third youngest debutant ever following his debut against Cardiff City in 2021. He has since gone on to become Brighton and the Republic of Ireland's youngest ever scorer. Advertisement The following season, as a then 18-year-old, Ferguson scored six goals and provided two assists in 19 appearances in the Premier League for Brighton – an impressive return for such a young striker. But the Irish international demonstrated a predatory instinct which belied his years, while retaining a physical frame which made the introduction to men's football a smooth one. United were linked with a move the following summer in 2023 after Old Trafford scouts returned glowing reports on Ferguson. But this interest was never followed up and the Red Devils instead opted to sign Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta in a deal worth £72 million. Ferguson's progress has halted since this point, however. As has the clamour for one of England's big clubs to sign the 20-year-old, though it is natural for a young striker's progress to not be linear. Advertisement In the first half of this season, Ferguson had played only a bit-part role for Brighton under Fabian Hurzeler, making 13 appearances with only one goal. Consequently, in the final week of January, with the winter window drawing to a close, the Seagulls 'made it clear…that their Republic of Ireland international would be available on loan,' according to The 42 – a reputable Irish sports outlet. West Ham emerged as the frontrunners for Ferguson with former Brighton manager Graham Potter, who handed the striker his debut at the Amex Stadium, now in charge of the Hammers. Bayer Leverkusen and Chelsea also expressed interest but it was the East London club who pulled ahead in negotiations, despite Ferguson preferring a move to Stamford Bridge. 'When Chelsea pulled out, other clubs are believed to have challenged West Ham even as the medical approached. Fulham wanted to do business, and it can be revealed that Manchester United made such firm advances late in the window to try and bring Ferguson to Old Trafford that he almost reneged on his commitment to West Ham, before ultimately sticking with the Hammers as it was so far down the line.' Ultimately, the Reds' dramatic move proved unsuccessful and the club were unable to sign a new forward for Ruben Amorim despite both Marcus Rashford and Antony leaving on loan. Advertisement United would finish the season in 15th in the league with unceremonious exits from both the FA Cup and, more crucially, the Europa League. It was the club's worst season in the Premier League era and they broke multiple records in terms of points, position, and losses. But it was also the lowest scoring campaign by a United season in the top division's history with just 44 goals across 38 games. Only four teams scored less than Amorim's side – Everton and the three relegated clubs, Ipswich Town, Leicester City and Southampton. The senior striking partnership of Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee combined for just seven league goals, despite totalling fees in excess of £100 million across the last two summers. Rashford and Antony scored the same number of league goals for their adopted sides combined across four months of football, comparison. The need for a new forward in January was urgent, and it's an indictment on the current options at Old Trafford that an out-of-form 20-year-old striker for Brighton would still have provided an upgrade on them. Aid ship aiming to break Israel's siege of Gaza sets sail from Italy
International nonprofit organisation Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC) says one of its vessels has left Sicily to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza, after a previous attempt failed due to a drone attack on a different ship in the Mediterranean. The 12-person crew, which includes Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, Irish actor Liam Cunningham and Franco-Palestinian MEP Rima Hassan, set sail on the Madleen from the port of Catania on Sunday, carrying barrels of relief supplies that the group called 'limited amounts, though symbolic'. The voyage comes after another vessel operated by the group, the Conscience, was hit by two drones just outside Maltese territorial waters in early May. While FFC said Israel was to blame for the incident, it has not responded to requests for comment. 'We are doing this because no matter what odds we are against, we have to keep trying, because the moment we stop trying is when we lose our humanity,' Thunberg told reporters at a news conference before the departure. The Swedish climate activist had been due to board the Conscience. She added that 'no matter how dangerous this mission is, it is nowhere near as dangerous as the silence of the entire world in the face of the lives being genocised'. The activists expect to take seven days to reach their destination, if they are not stopped. The FCC, launched in 2010, is a non-violent international movement supporting Palestinians, combining humanitarian aid with political protest against the blockade on Gaza. It said the trip 'is not charity. This is a non-violent, direct action to challenge Israel's illegal siege and escalating war crimes'. United Nations agencies and major aid groups say Israeli restrictions, the breakdown of law and order, and widespread looting make it extremely difficult to deliver aid to Gaza's roughly two million inhabitants. The situation in Gaza is at its worst since the war between Israel and Hamas began 19 months ago, the UN said on Friday, despite a resumption of limited aid deliveries in the Palestinian enclave. Under growing global pressure, Israel ended an 11-week blockade on Gaza on May 19, allowing extremely limited UN-led operations to resume. On Monday, a new avenue for aid distribution was also launched: the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, backed by the United States and Israel, but with the UN and international aid groups refusing to work with it, saying it is not neutral and has a distribution model that forces the displacement of Palestinians. The FCC is the latest among a growing number of critics to accuse Israel of genocidal acts in its war in Gaza, allegations Israel vehemently denies. 'We are breaking the siege of Gaza by sea, but that's part of a broader strategy of mobilisations that will also attempt to break the siege by land,' said activist Thiago Avila. Avila also mentioned the upcoming Global March to Gaza – an international initiative also open to doctors, lawyers and members of the media – which is set to leave Egypt and reach the Rafah crossing in mid-June to stage a protest there, calling on Israel to stop the Gaza offensive and reopen the border.
