Man dead and girl injured following shooting incident at Carlow shopping centre
A man has died following a shooting incident at a shopping centre in Co Carlow.
The PA news agency understands that it appears that the dead man's wounds were self-inflicted.
A young girl was also injured in the incident but did not require hospital care.
Gardai have identified the dead man as a white Irish male.
Ireland's Justice Minister Jim O'Callaghan has described it as a 'really shocking incident'.
One local councillor told how people ran terrified from the shopping centre in Carlow town as shots were fired.
The body of the man remains at the scene and will not be removed until the area has been declared safe.
The shopping centre has been evacuated and emergency services remain at the scene, but gardai said there is no further concern for public safety.
A Garda spokesperson said they were alerted to reports of a firearm discharge at Fairgreen Shopping Centre shortly after 6.15pm.
The spokesperson said: 'An Garda Siochana are currently at the scene, with the shopping centre and car park cordoned off.
'The cordon will remain in place overnight.
'A white Irish adult male is deceased at the scene.
'The Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team has been requested to attend.'
The spokesperson added: 'A female juvenile received treatment from paramedics following the incident but did not require hospital care.
'It's undetermined at this time as to how those injuries were sustained.'
Gardai have asked that anyone who may have recorded footage of the incident not share it on social media platforms or messaging apps, but instead provide it to Carlow Garda Station.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Carlow Garda Station at 059-9136620 or the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111.
Investigations are ongoing.
Ireland's deputy premier, Simon Harris, said he was 'deeply concerned' to hear about the incident and was being kept briefed.
Mr Harris said: 'I understand a young child has been hurt and I join with people across our country in thinking of them and their family tonight.
'I am also thinking of all those who witnessed this situation and the awful shock and upset it must have caused them.
'I know their families and communities will rally to support them.
'I am grateful to our emergency services for their work and response.'
The Tanaiste added: 'This is a live Garda Investigation with the support of members of the Army Bomb Disposal Unit.
'I have been in touch with the chief of staff of the Defence Forces, Lieutenant General Rossa Mulcahy, in relation to this incident and the assistance our Defence Forces are providing.
'It's important now that our Gardai can carry out this investigation thoroughly.'
Mr O'Callaghan said: 'This was a really shocking incident.
'My thoughts are with everyone affected by the shooting and the community and families impacted, including those working at the scene.
'I would appeal to anyone who has any information to speak to the gardai and help with their investigations in any way that they can.'
He added: 'This is something we never want or expect to happen in our communities.
'Gun violence is very rare in Ireland, and I am determined that will remain the case.
'The area in Carlow is safe.
'We must now allow An Garda Siochana to investigate this incident fully.'
Local Fine Gael councillor Fergal Browne said people in the town had been left terrified
He said: 'I think it is all under control now, it seems the worst is over.
'People were obviously terrified, a bank holiday Sunday, going into town to do their shopping.
'People ran from the centre crying and upset.
'There was a bunch of foreign students in the area, who could not believe they were caught up in the middle of all of it.
'It's a busy spot. We launched a photographic exhibition there on Friday night in the shopping centre.'
Mr Browne added: 'There is lots of activity in the centre between people shopping and people working there, exhibitions.
'You could not make it up. It's very upsetting for everyone who was involved in it or who witnessed it.
'I was down there in the last hour and it seems to have calmed down a good bit now.'
Mr Browne said he wanted to thank all of the emergency services who had attended the scene.

A common dealbreaker that new car buyers say steers them out of electric vehicles is the sheer state of the charging infrastructure compared to gas-powered cars. Although manufacturers like Ford, Hyundai, Genesis, and Honda offer new owners the opportunity to install a free home charging unit, this is not an entirely "one-size-fits-all" solution for all owners for various reasons. However, as public EV charging appears in more public places and heavily trafficked corridors for the general public's use, one of America's busiest highways has taken a massive chunk of its EV charging offline. According to a new report by NJ Advance Media and the New Jersey Turnpike Authority has ordered Tesla to decommission and remove 64 Superchargers at rest stops along the New Jersey Turnpike, the stretch of I-95 spanning northern and southern New Jersey. Per a May 30 statement from the New Jersey Turnpike Authority (NJTA), the state agency responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the New Jersey Turnpike and the Garden State Parkway, the move comes as the agency decided to transition to what it calls "Universal Open Access EV chargers" starting on June 6. These chargers, which are provided by Applegreen Electric (an arm of Irish company Applegreen, who operates NJTA's service areas), are said to be compatible "with all makes and models of EVs" and will be available on June 6 at various service areas across the Turnpike including the Vince Lombardi, Woodrow Wilson, Richard Stockton, James Fenimore Cooper, Joyce Kilmer, and Walt Whitman Service Areas, with additional chargers at the Molly Pitcher Service Area in July and the Clara Barton and John Fenwick Service Areas in Fall 2025. According to early user-reported data from Plugshare, these chargers are capable of up to 400 kW charging and are usually located next to Tesla Superchargers at select service areas. However, this move is not without conflict. In a lengthy post on X (formerly known as Twitter) on May 30, the official account for Tesla Charging wrote that the Turnpike Authority's order came after it rejected any requests to coexist with the Applegreen chargers on the Turnpike, adding that it had been "preparing for 3 years for this potential outcome by building 116 stalls off the New Jersey Turnpike" in certain high-traffic areas. Tesla says that it offered the NJTA "above-market commercial terms" to sweeten the deal, including offering its NJ Turnpike Superchargers with "screens and NACS with CCS1 'magic docks.'" Ultimately, Tesla called the NJTA's decision to decommission its Superchargers a step back for all EV users who use the Turnpike. 'Tesla always advocates for more infrastructure and co-location with additional third-party charging providers. This drives down costs through optionality and accelerates EV adoption by having sufficient capacity to shoulder peaks,' the automaker said on X. Despite reaching out to invest in the state, Tesla claims that the NJTA's decision to remove Tesla superchargers is a setback for EV drivers. "We expect that ~30 times more fast-charging capacity is needed to get to full EV adoption," it said on X. "NJTA's decision to remove, rather than add, critical charging infrastructure is a setback for New Jersey's EV adoption goals of 100% Zero-Emission New Car Sales by 2035. It removes Turnpike access to the most reliable (99.9% uptime), least congested (<1% waiters), and cost-effective (~30% lower $/kWh) charging." In a May 30 post responding to a quote tweet from Tesla fan and Model Y owner Sawyer Merritt, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said that the NJTA's decision "sounds like corruption." I do not own an EV, but I live in New Jersey, and while I observe that EV charging is very prevalent in many convenient places adjacent to major highways, including shopping malls like the infamous American Dream mall, large retail centers where Walmarts and Targets are located, and non-service-area roadside stops like Wawas, I view the loss of Superchargers on the Turnpike as a bit of a disservice to EV owners. The New Jersey Turnpike is a major thoroughfare connecting two major Northeastern cities, New York and Philadelphia. Many drivers who travel on it pass through with a further destination in mind, and the faster out of Jersey, the better. It's not just Teslas that charge at Superchargers. So far, Ford, GM, Rivian, Volvo, Polestar, Hyundai, and Genesis are just some of the manufacturers that support it, with others like Honda and Acura soon to have that capability. Though one may view Tesla Supercharging as anything but universal, as someone who has had to wait upwards of hours in line to charge non-Tesla EVs at "universal stations," keeping the Superchargers where they were would help ease any potential congestion these Applegreen chargers will have. Edinburgh mob boss Mark Richardson's associates 'plotted Spanish hit' at secret gang summit
The murders of Ross Monaghan and Eddie Lyons Jnr were 'plotted during a secret summit', according to new reports. The shooting happened in Costa Del Sol in Spain, after a masked gunman leapt out of a car outside an Irish pub on the beachfront in Fuengirola. Monaghan, 43, and Lyons, 46, were two of the leading members of the Lyons gang, reports the Scottish Daily Express. The planning is said to have taken plane in Kirkintilloch, nine miles north-east of Glasgow, where Daniel clan members 'gathered for a council of war'. In recent months, members of this east coast-west coast criminal alliance have suffered in silence in the face of a relentless onslaught from their hated rivals, the Lyons, along with a relatively new face on the scene - Ross 'Miami' McGill. Firebombings on cars, homes and businesses, drive-by shootings that left bullet holes in doors and windows, a violent home invasion in Glasgow that left a young boy and an older woman - both related to the Daniel family - bloodied and battered, and a number of machete attacks. In one, an Edinburgh businessman who just happens to be an old friend of Richardson's, was hospitalised; in another, workers at a Daniel-linked garage East Kilbride were injured by blade-wielding thugs. But nobody had been killed. And the word was starting to go out that the Daniels were defenceless in the onslaught of this violence. Not only that, they were being mocked by McGill and his crew, known as Tamo Junto (a Portugeuse phrase meaning 'we are together'), thanks to a blizzard of TikTok videos. The former Rangers football ultra now lives in Dubai, alongside Steven Lyons, 44 - acknowledged as the head of the gang - and members of the Irish Kinahan cartel. And it is the backing of the Kinahans which is seen as crucial to the recent rise of the Lyons. In events later likened by Donald Findlay KC to "a scene from The Godfather", two gunmen in trenchcoats burst in and opened fire on David Lyons. He dived for cover but his 21-year-old nephew Michael Lyons was shot dead, while Steven Lyons and Robert Pickett were gravely injured. Now, it appears that the Daniels may have pulled off another 'spectacular' that will once again change the face of Scotland's underworld for years to come. The two rival gangs have their roots in the tower blocks and run-down council estates of north-east Glasgow - the Daniels in Possil and the Lyons in Milton. Even today, this turf is jealously guarded; as recently as April, an ageing Daniel gang member was jailed for life for the shotgun murder of a Lyons footsoldier in Milton. Malcom McNee, 63, was told he would die in prison for blasting to death John McGregor, 44. Prosecutor John Macpherson told Stirling Sheriff Court: "The background to this case is an ongoing feud between the Lyons and the Daniels organised crime groups. Westray Street is a regular meeting point for youths associated with the Lyons family, while members of the Daniel family live in adjoining streets." But while the rank and file still live here in some of Britain's poorest neighbourhoods, the bosses have fled to the suburbs and housing estates in the countryside. And here, too, the turf appears to be clearly marked with the Daniels putting down roots in East Dunbartonshire and the Lyons based around Cumbernauld. At one stage, Eddie Lyons Sr and other family members all lived in one street - dubbed, inevitably, the 'Lyons Den' - in an upmarket development off the M80, in new-build homes fitted with bullet-proof glass in the windows. Kevin 'Gerbil' Carroll, the feared Daniel enforcer who was shot dead in 2010, moved to Lennoxtown and his right-hand man Francis 'Fraggle' Green swapped the mean streets of north Glasgow for rural Milton of Campsie (once described by the Glasgow Herald as a 'gangland village', much to the embarrassment of the locals). The late Jamie Daniel - who died of cancer in 2016 - lived in a mansion in Glasgow's West End but he too had links to Kirky. In 2012, after a taxi nearly clipped one of his lovers outside the town's Tesco supermarket, the scrap metal dealer turned millionaire crime boss was accused of exacting personal revenge. The taxi driver was summoned to his office, where a man emerged from a BMW with blacked out windows and delivered a savage beating; so savage, in fact, that the driver couldn't recall what happened when the case ended up in court. All the other witnesses developed a similar amnesia and Daniel walked free. Such memory lapses were also common among victims of Carroll's 'alien abduction' crew, rival Lyons dealers who were kidnapped, tortured and 'taxed' of their drugs and earnings, before being dumped in the street. One individual was left wandering in the leafy village of Lenzie, causing net curtains to twitch. When the sadistic Gerbil was lured out of hiding and ruthlessly taken out by the Lyons crew in a sophisticated operation, the hit took place in the most mundane of surroundings - an Asda car park in Robroyston, surrounded by busy, harassed mums and other weekday shoppers. Monaghan had been cleared of Gerbil's murder and he is said to have been a 'marked man' ever since, although it could be argued that the leading members of both gangs have lived their entire adult lives with a target on their backs. Some in Glasgow - including members of law enforcement - are sceptical that the Daniels and Richardson mob had the "wherewithal" to organise the shooting in the Costa del Sol.

Irish pro-Palestinian activist arrested in West Bank, fights deportation order
The 70-year-old pro-Palestinian activist was allegedly arrested alongside 48-year-old Swedish activist Susanne Björk. Elderly Irish woman Máire ní Mhurchú, who is known as D Murphy, was reportedly arrested by the IDF in theWest Bank Palestinian village of Khalet al-Daba'a on Sunday night, Irish media reported on Monday. The 70-year-oldpro-Palestinian activist was allegedly arrested alongside 48-year-old Swedish activist Susanne Björk. The pair had been volunteering for the International Solidarity Movement when they refused IDF orders to leave the area. Irish media claimed they had initially been stopped by the Israeli military. Israel Police reportedly detained both women for being in a closed military zone. While Björk is set to return to Sweden, Irish media reported D Murphy is fighting against the deportation order and remains in detention at Ben-Gurion Airport. D Murphy was also reportedly detained in 2011 by Israeli authorities. Murphy's son, Dale Ryan, told the Irish Times: 'As far as I can see, her only crime was observing crimes against Palestinian people. D has always had a strong sense of justice, and I know she could not sit at home while she knew her friends in Masafer Yatta and all of Palestine were suffering unnecessarily. 'I am very proud of my mother for sticking up for the basic human rights of her friends and trying to raise awareness of the injustices the Palestinian people are experiencing.'
