Toronto musicians pay tribute to Black Sabbath frontman and 'lord of metal' Ozzy Osbourne

Yahoo23-07-2025
Ozzy Osbourne, legendary frontman of the rock band Black Sabbath, "opened doors" for people who wanted to play heavy metal, Toronto musicians said following news of his death.
Osbourne died Tuesday morning at the age of 76, his family said in a statement. No cause of death has been provided, but Osbourne disclosed five years ago that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease.
His death comes more than two weeks after his final show on July 5 in Birmingham, U.K., where he performed while sitting on a throne. He and the original members of Black Sabbath reunited for the concert in front of about 42,000 fans.
Members of tribute bands and experts on rock music in Toronto said Osbourne had a major impact on music.
Jaye Schwarzer, bass guitarist for the Toronto-based punk rock band Cancer Bats said Osbourne had a "distinct and unique" voice that wasn't found in pop music when he came onto the scene, which made him stand out.
"He's the lord of metal. He's the prince of darkness. He made it cool to not conform," Schwarzer said on Tuesday.

'A different approach to music'
Cancer Bats, using the name Bat Sabbath, have performed as a Black Sabbath tribute band. Schwarzer said it was special to see Black Sabbath twice.
Schwarzer said when Black Sabbath was becoming known, pop bands such as the Bee Gees were big.
"Nobody sounded dark and evil like they did," he said. "And so, it just opened doors for people with a different approach to music to say, you can do this."
Osbourne rose to prominence in the late 1960s with Black Sabbath, becoming known as the father of heavy metal. In the 1980s, he launched a successful solo career. He became infamous for biting the head off a bat on stage and for his drug-fuelled lifestyle.
He later reinvented himself as a lovable, but foul-mouthed, reality TV star with his family.
'He championed heavy metal for the masses'
Roland Murray, a guitar player for The Ozzy Experience, an Ozzy Osbourne Black Sabbath tribute band based in Toronto, said he was "devastated" to hear that Osbourne had died.
"He championed heavy metal for the masses," Murray said.
"Rest in peace, Ozzy. I'm going to miss you. People around the world are going to miss you."
'The metal equivalent of Elvis Presley dying'
Alan Cross, host of The Ongoing History of New Music, a music history documentary radio program in Canada produced by Corus Entertainment, said Osbourne's legacy cannot be underestimated and his impact on the music industry is undeniable.
"This is the metal equivalent of Elvis Presley dying. This is how big a deal it was. Ozzy was this character who has been with us since 1969. He survived a billion things that would have killed anybody else. In the meantime, he and Black Sabbath helped invent a brand new style of music known as heavy metal," Cross said.
"That style of music has influenced countless bands over the last 50 years. And Ozzy himself became a star, a solo star, with a sound of his own in the 1980s, 1990s. And then he became this TV star, and really, if you want to look at it, a pioneer of reality television," he added.
"One of the things about Ozzy is, no matter where he went, he was adored and people loved him."
Osbourne is survived by wife and manager Sharon; five children, including Jack, Kelly and Aimee; and several grandchildren.

White House announces new $200M ballroom as part of Trump's latest makeover of 'The People's House'

White House announces new $200M ballroom as part of Trump's latest makeover of 'The People's House' WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House on Thursday announced that construction on a massive, new $200 million ballroom will begin in September and be ready before President Donald Trump 's term ends in early 2029. It will be the latest change introduced to what's known as 'The People's House' since the Republican president returned to office in January. It also will be the first structural change to the Executive Mansion itself since the addition of the Truman balcony in 1948. Trump has substantially redecorated the Oval Office through the addition of golden flourishes and cherubs, presidential portraits and other items, and installed massive flagpoles on the north and south lawns to fly the American flag. Workers are currently finishing up a project to replace the lawn in the Rose Garden with stone. Trump for months has been promising to build a ballroom, saying the White House doesn't have space big enough for large events and scoffing at the notion of hosting heads of state and other guests in tents on the lawn as past administrations have done for state dinners attended by hundreds of guests. The East Room, the largest room in the the White House, can accommodate about 200 people. Trump said he's been planning the construction for some time. 'They've wanted a ballroom at the White House for more than 150 years but there's never been a president that was good at ballrooms,' Trump told reporters Thursday. 'I'm good at building things and we're going to build quickly and on time. It'll be beautiful, top, top of the line.' He said the new ballroom would not interfere with the mansion itself. 'It'll be near it but not touching it and pays total respect to the existing building, which I'm the biggest fan of,' he said of the White House. "It's my favorite. It's my favorite place. I love it.' Trump said the ballroom will serve administrations to come. 'It'll be a great legacy project,' he said. 'I think it will be really beautiful.' The 90,000-square-foot ballroom will be built where the East Wing sits with a seated capacity of 650 people. The East Wing houses several offices, including the first lady's. Those offices will be temporarily relocated during construction and that wing of the building will be modernized and renovated, said White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt. 'Nothing will be torn down,' she said. White House chief of staff Susie Wiles said the president, whose early career was in real estate and construction, and his White House are 'fully committed' to working with the appropriate organizations to preserve the mansion's 'special history.' 'President Trump is a builder at heart and has an extraordinary eye for detail,' Wiles said in a statement. Leavitt said at her briefing Thursday that Trump and other donors have committed to raising the approximately $200 million in construction costs. She did not name any of the other donors. Renderings of what the future ballroom will look like were posted on the White House website. The president chose McCrery Architects, based in Washington, as lead architect on the project. The construction team will be led by Clark Construction. Engineering will be provided by AECOM. Trump also has another project in mind. He told NBC News in an interview that he intends to replace what he said was a 'terribly' remodeled bathroom in the famous Lincoln Bedroom with one that is closer in style to the 19-th century. 10 Best Fake Songs From Fake Movie Bands

This summer has seen some pretty catchy needle drops in movies, from Superman's Mighty Crabjoys to KPop Demon Hunters flash mob fandoms for Huntr/x and the Saja Boys. The latter Netflix release has reached not only Billboard music charts but also become the most streamed animated feature ever. With that in mind, we look back at our favorite fake bands' best songs of the past 30 years. While half the list includes incredible recent music from hit movies, the other half (and our number one slot) nod at the songs that really propelled this particular niche in movies—think A Goofy Movie. So, if you notice some of your favorites missing, simmer down because we excluded musicals and kept to genre movies that had original songs featured in them. Like Superman, we can't help but think this song is for the cool kids. No matter how hard we tried, we could not get 'Try Everything' out of our heads, and Gazelle (voiced by Shakira) might be back in Zootopia 2. Finally, the full single from Freaky Friday has been released for Freakier Friday sung by Pink Slip's in-universe lead singer Christina Vidal Mitchell. Josie and the Pussycats was such an underrated gem when it came out but was formative for millennials. We know there are so many songs, and it was hard to narrow it to one, so we went with 'Three Small Words' (featuring Kay Hanley as the voice of lead singer Josie), which encompasses the moment in time this movie embodies for a generation. Sammie (Miles Caton) in the Sinners universe went on to become a blues legend, but the night that changed his life was when he first performed 'I Lied to You.' The scene is hands down one of Ryan Coogler's masterpieces, and the music sizzles off the celluloid fever dream… just watch. It took a few years, but the Envy Adams (Brie Larson) on-screen performance of the Clash at Demonhead's 'Black Sheep' was finally released on Spotify and other platforms to enjoy. We love Metric's version, but the angst in the movie version is top tier. The Billie Eilish and Finneas-produced songs from Pixar's Turning Red are all so good. This one was also hard to narrow down, but the chorus of 'Nobody Like U' is never not on my mind. The KPop Demon Hunters soundtrack also has too many killer songs from each band to pick from. While I particularly love 'Soda Pop,' we have to give the Saja Boys props for 'Your Idol' for charting on Billboard. In 'Golden,' we get lyricist Ejae's heart and soul shining through. The powerful anthem is coming for 'Let It Go''s crown in replayability among young animation fans. Powerline is the blueprint, the O.G. of modern fake music pop stars thanks to A Goofy Movie. Vocalist Tevin Campbell made an icon so scene-stealing we're still waiting for a full Powerline album 30 years later… or at least a sequel with more fake music to dance to. Want more io9 news? 'But I do want to make sure it's a celebration, not a mope-fest.' 'I'd also like some pranks: maybe the sound of knocking inside the coffin; or a video of me asking my doctor for a second opinion on his diagnosis of 'death,'' Ozzy added. 'There'll be no harping on the bad times.'
