SHARON, Pa. (WKBN) – The talent of a dozen budding young artists was recognized Friday in Sharon.
Shenango Valley Congressman Mike Kelly presented awards for this year's local winners of the Congressional Art Competition.
Students from 11 high schools all around the 16th District submitted entries.
This was the second year the event was held at the Hope Center for Arts and Technology, and directors admit the competition was pretty stiff.
'We brought in five professional artists to do the judging, and this year, they struggled beyond belief. There were numerous times when I'm like, are we going to get to some decision? When you see the art, it's really, really impressive,' said Lorie Hines, with the Hope Center for Arts and Technology.
Each of the 47 students who entered the competition received a special proclamation from Kelly.
The winners of the 2025 Congressional Art Competition are:
1st place: Jeffrey Deniker, Mercer Area High School
2nd place: Makenzi Emick, Franklin Area High School
3rd place: Anna Logue, Hickory High School
Honorable Mention: Damir Trawick, Hickory High School
The artwork will now be on display at the Hope Center for the next week. Eventually, all of the winning entries from around the country will be hung in a section of the U.S. Capitol in Washington.

Book gives Youngstown residents a voice

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — Youngstown history is always a good read. 'Car bombs to Cookie Tables' is a collection of stories put together by Youngstown native Jacqueline Marino. There's one essay on cookie tables, and a little talk about car bombs. It's a collection of essays, poems and pictures that lets Youngstown residents tell the true story of what living here is like. Ed O'Neill is among the people who share their perspectives in the book. It came out in 2015 and was updated in 2020. 'Because I feel like a lot of people do have their own stories, their own Youngstown stories, that might just not have figured out how to tell them yet,' Marino said. 'And all of the writers in this book, they have all gone the distance. They have all gotten that bit of inspiration and carried it all the way through to a written essay.' 'Car Bombs to Cookie Tables' is available at bookstores or online. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
