Crime victim to lead local healing vigil day of action
NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — What should have been — equality in public schools — is juxtaposed with what could have been — a young reporter is murdered in downtown Norfolk in 2022.

Cameron Bertrand, who has spent a decade working to take back the community, has serious concerns about the next decade.
'Not only is it a concern as a social scientist, but I know that this is a fact when you listen to the qualitative responses that our community has given and you look at the result of it,' Bertrand said. 'This is not something that we're asking of our government. It's a demand. We cannot allow people to step in and take away resources that our families need.'
Wise beyond his years, Bertrand himself was shot on Nov. 7, 2015, in a case that remains unsolved. This weekend, Bertrand is wrapping arms around the entire village by hosting the National Healing Vigil Day of Action.

Saturday morning, families and dignitaries will meet in downtown Norfolk. Then at 3 p.m., the day of action event moves to Buckroe Beach in Hampton.
The vigils are part of National Crime Victim Rights Week.
'It's important for us to make sure that we're advocating for families, making sure that we're shedding light on the need for policies and legislation to protect our families and to make sure that when people do go out and advocates speak up against violence, that they're protected, too,' Bertrand said. 'So there's a really big need to make sure that we have sustainable resources and that we're focused on a review of rehabilitation of our loved ones, and even the perpetrators, and making sure that we're not relying on incarceration to do what our community can do.'

SUMNER COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — Two people were arrested after the Sumner County Sheriff's Office conducted a traffic stop Sunday. When Harris stepped out of the vehicle, Sumner County officials said that drug paraphernalia fell from beneath him. When Dodd tried to leave the vehicle, he reached for his pockets; deputies discovered fentanyl in Dodd's pockets. Black bear found dead in Sumner County Additionally, a search of the Altima yielded about an ounce of cocaine in the driver's side door and a digital scale 'with residue' in the center console. Harris was apprehended and transported to booking on new charges and active warrants out of Metro Nashville. Dodd was cited for fentanyl possession, Sumner County officials said. 2 teens accused of committing multiple armed robberies at Gresham apartment complex
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A pair of teens were arrested early Monday morning after committing two armed robberies at an apartment complex, Gresham police said. Jeremiah White, 18, faces multiple charges, including first-degree robbery. He was lodged at the Multnomah County Detention Center. The other suspect, a 17-year-old boy, was lodged in the Donald E. Long Juvenile Detention Center on similar charges. The first incident took place just before 11 p.m. at the apartment complex in the 24000 block of SE Stark St. 'Officers responded to a report of a pedestrian robbery at gunpoint at the apartment complex. The victim reported being approached by a group of four subjects, one armed with a handgun. The suspects stole the victim's keys, jewelry, and a specific brand hoodie before fleeing on foot,' police said. A second robbery was reported at the same location just two hours later. 'A male subject ran to a nearby service station and reported that he had been lured to the apartments by two females via Instagram, then ambushed by two armed males who stole his cell phone and hoodie. Witnesses noted that one of the suspects was wearing a distinctive brand hoodie taken from the first victim,' police said. Around 3 a.m., officers saw the two suspects near the basketball courts at the complex, one of whom was wearing the hoodie of one of the victims. The two suspects attempted to flee from officers, but both were eventually taken into custody. The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact police. Jay Mitchell to run for Alabama attorney general
Former Alabama Supreme Court Justice Jay Mitchell announced Monday that he is running for state attorney general. 'This isn't just my race — it's our fight for Alabama's future. I'll take on the radical left, advance the Trump agenda, and never stop fighting for our state,' Mitchell said. Mitchell resigned from the Supreme Court last month. The attorney general serves as the state's top law enforcement officer. Brighton City Councilman Jerome McMullin charged with releasing video of double homicide during active investigation Mitchell said in a statement announcing his campaign that he will focus on combating violent crime, enforcing immigration laws and supporting law enforcement. He also promised 'to protect the unborn' and fight what he called the 'woke agenda.' 'No boys in girls' sports. No DEI. No more woke nonsense,' Mitchell said in a statement. During his time on the bench, Mitchell is best known for writing a Supreme Court ruling saying frozen embryos are considered children under the state's Wrongful Death of Minor Act. The ruling allowed several couples to pursue wrongful death lawsuits after their frozen embryos were destroyed in a 2020 accident at a south Alabama storage facility. The ruling temporarily upended IVF services and drew national attention as clinics became concerned about civil liability. Mitchell did not directly mention the frozen embryo ruling in his campaign announcement. Blount County District Attorney Pamela Casey is also running for the office. Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall cannot seek another term because of term limits. Marshall is running for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Sen.
