Railway Minister reviews ops, orders special trains for stranded passengers
According to a press release, Indian Railways arranged special trains for passengers stranded at Jammu and Chandigarh airports due to the closures caused by tension between India and Pakistan.
Earlier, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and relevant aviation authorities issued a series of notices to Airmen (NOTAMS) announcing the temporary closure of 32 airports across Northern and Western India for all civil flight operations.
Due to operational reasons, the NOTAM is effective from May 9, 2025, to May 14, 2025 (which corresponds to 0529 IST on May 15, 2025).The list of 32 airports include Adhampur, Ambala, Amritsar, Awantipur, Bathinda, Bhuj, Bikaner, Chandigarh, Halwara, Hindon, Jaisalmer, Jammu, Jamnagar, Jodhpur, Kandla, Kangra (Gaggal), Keshod, Kishangarh, Kullu Manali (Bhuntar), Leh, Ludhiana, Mundra, Naliya, Pathankot, Patiala, Porbandar, Rajkot (Hirasar), Sarsawa, Shimla, Srinagar, Thoise and Uttarlai.
After taking full stock of the situation, the Railway Minister reviewed the arrangements made for rail operations and directed railway officials to coordinate with various government agencies and operate trains to assist people in the border areas. AI171 crash: US attorney seeks probe data, eyes lawsuit against Boeing
Mike Andrews, the lead US attorney representing more than 65 families impacted by the Air India AI171 crash, has called for full transparency in the investigation. "We want to know the truth, we want transparency and exactly what happened," Andrews told news agency ANI. "These families want to know, and they deserve the respect to know what happened to their loved ones." A report by The Economic Times quoted Andrews as saying that if the flight data recorder (FDR) and cockpit voice recorder (CVR) findings point to technical faults as the cause of the crash, he would move US courts to pursue a product liability case against Boeing. 'We are placing formal requests with the Air India and AAIB (Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau) to release the details of the FDR, which will reveal a great deal about the accident,' he told The Economic Times. Andrews also met the lone survivor and his family, describing them as "humble and hardworking" people who are enduring unimaginable pain. He added that investigators are exploring multiple possible causes, including a malfunction in the throttle control system. "One question is whether or not moisture can affect the systems and cause a problem," he said. Anger over compensation delays The US attorney criticised the slow pace of compensation, calling it a 'bureaucratic process' that would not have existed under the leadership of the late Ratan Tata. "Even in the US, we know who Ratan Tata was," Andrews said. "We know about his work ethic and his humility. If he were here today, we don't believe victims and their families would be subjected to delayed payments." On July 26, Air India released an interim compensation of ₹25 lakh each to the families of 147 passengers and 19 victims on the ground. This amount will be adjusted against the final settlement later. Tata Group's memorial and support The Tata Group has also set up the "AI-171 Memorial and Welfare Trust" in memory of the victims. The Trust has pledged an ex gratia of ₹1 crore per deceased individual, while also funding the rebuilding of the damaged BJ Medical College Hostel and extending support to first responders and medical teams. On June 12, Air India flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8, crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The accident killed 260 people — 229 passengers, 12 crew members, and 19 people on the ground. Air India CEO on flight safety Following the tragedy, Air India CEO Campbell Wilson addressed frequent flyers through an email, saying their concerns about safety were 'understandable". He assured that the airline is strengthening checks, inspections, and training to ensure safer operations. India's aviation regulator, the DGCA, recently issued four show cause notices to Air India over repeated safety lapses, including issues with crew deployment, pilot rest rules, and training. DGCA records show 19 top-level safety findings in the past year across Air India Group airlines — 10 in Vistara, seven in Air India, and two in Air India Express. Other Indian carriers recorded none in this category. The regulator clarified that higher observations are 'normal' for larger airlines but stressed that immediate corrective action is required. Air India crash: What the preliminary report found The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau's (AAIB) initial findings revealed that both fuel control switches had been moved to the 'cutoff' position, cutting supply to the engines shortly after take-off. The report found one pilot questioning the move, while the other denying making it. Wilson, in his note to customers, added, 'All our processes are backed by a comprehensive Safety Management System aligned with global standards and fully compliant with DGCA and ICAO guidelines.'

Do Railway Employees, Their Families Travel In Trains For Free? Here's The Truth
Last Updated: Employees get three free railway passes and four Privilege Ticket Orders each year, though one pass is given before five years of service. Officers, however, follow different rules Many people assume that railway employees and their families can hop on trains for free, but the reality is more nuanced. Indian Railways offers a pass facility to its employees and officers, but the rules and provisions differ for each category. The railway passes allow employees and their families to travel free of charge, but they are valid only for a fixed period and come with specific terms and conditions. In some cases, employees may still need to pay for tickets at certain locations. Overall, the passes provide limited-time travel benefits rather than unrestricted free travel. Retired railway officer SK Srivastava explained that Indian Railways issues passes and PTOs (Privilege Ticket Orders) to employees after five years of regular service. Employees are entitled to three sets of free railway passes and four sets of PTOs annually. However, employees receive one set of passes before completing five years of service, whereas different rules apply to officers. Fare Charged In PTO, Travel Free With Pass Pass Limit Ends, Fare Applies Once the annual limit of three passes and four PTOs is exhausted, railway employees must pay fares like regular passengers. The pass and PTO facilities automatically expire after one year. To obtain a pass or PTO, employees must submit their railway ID, service certificate, and other required documents to the railway administration. Only family members listed in the employee's service book are eligible to travel using these facilities. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. NCERT's Special Module On Partition Horrors Blames Congress, Stirs Row
Last Updated: The secondary stage module by NCERT highlights the Indian leaders' lack of experience in handling national or provincial administration, the army, and police. NCERT introduced a special module for schools to commemorate Partition Horrors Remembrance Day on August 14. This module aims to educate students about the reasons behind the partition and identify those responsible for it. The module attributes accountability to three significant figures: Mohammad Ali Jinnah, who demanded Pakistan; the Congress, which agreed to partition given the circumstances; and Lord Mountbatten, who expedited the process. According to the module, Jinnah relentlessly pushed for a separate country, while Congress leaders Nehru and Patel chose to accept partition. Mountbatten's rapid formalisation of the partition is criticised for increasing chaos and violence. The module clarifies that the partition was not inevitable but resulted from misguided ideas and specific circumstances. Mountbatten hastened British withdrawal by setting the partition date to August 15, 1947, instead of June 1948. His haste exacerbated the chaos and violence, with the incomplete planning of the Radcliffe Line leaving millions uncertain about the status of their villages. The module clearly attributes this negligence to the tragedy of partition. The effects of partition continue to influence socio-political relations, including tensions with Pakistan, the Kashmir dispute, increased defence costs, and the ongoing mistrust between the two major communities. The modules describe Partition as an 'unprecedented human tragedy, with no parallel in world history." They document mass killings, the displacement of nearly 1.5 crore people, large-scale sexual violence, and trains of refugees arriving 'filled only with corpses, having been slaughtered en route." Horrific events in Noakhali, Calcutta, Rawalpindi, Thoha, and Beval are cited as chilling examples, reported ANI. The secondary stage module highlights the Indian leaders' lack of experience in handling national or provincial administration, the army, and police. 'None of the Indian leaders had experience in running national or even provincial administration, the army, police, etc. Hence, they had no idea of the massive problems that would naturally arise… Otherwise, such haste would not have been made," it states. The module identifies the Muslim League's Direct Action Day in August 1946 as a critical turning point, accompanied by violence. Jinnah's warning pressured Congress leaders Nehru and Patel into conceding to partition. The secondary module directly connects Partition to enduring challenges, including the Kashmir conflict, communal politics, and external pressures on India's foreign policy. It notes Pakistan's three wars to annex Kashmir and its subsequent policy of exporting jihadist terrorism as consequences of Partition. It reiterates the roles of Jinnah, Congress, and Mountbatten in the partition process. Mountbatten's role in advancing the transfer of power is highlighted as a careless act that left millions uncertain about their national affiliation even after Independence Day. The modules conclude by framing Partition as a warning for future generations. It stressed that shortsightedness in rulers can lead to national catastrophes and that concessions to violence in pursuit of peace can embolden violence-prone groups. The new module has stirred a row. Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit challenged the BJP for a discussion on Partition. '…I challenge NCERT for a discussion on Partition. Today, they (BJP) have NCERT under their control; they don't know anything about Partition," he told ANI. While party spokesperson Pawan Khera said, 'Burn this document as it doesn't tell the truth. Partition happened due to nexus between Hindu Mahasabha and Muslim League." He further added, 'RSS is danger to this nation. Idea of partition was first propagated by Hindu Mahasabha in 1938. It was repeated by Jinnah in 1940." Click here to add News18 as your preferred news source on Google. Stay updated with the latest education!
