Coastal folks to feel climate change effects

Kota Kinabalu: Independent Non-Executive Chairman of Life Water Berhad, Datuk Petrus Gimbad, has urged risk professionals to take climate change seriously, warning that Sabah's coastal communities could face mounting threats from rising sea levels and extreme weather events. Delivering the keynote address at the Marim International Conference 2025 on Tuesday, Petrus, who is also a private consultant (Sabah Government Representative) to the Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia, said global warming is on track to exceed the 1.5°C threshold unless fossil fuel dependency is significantly reduced.
Advertisement 'Global warming is real. Unless the world reduces its appetite for fossil fuels, we will overshoot 1.5°C,' he said. He stressed that organisations must adopt whole-system approaches to sustainability, including full life cycle assessments of their operations, and align business practices with environmental, social and governance (ESG) goals. Petrus also cited lessons from China and Singapore, where energy transition strategies are being balanced with the need for reliability and development. 'Sabah must plan carefully. We have financial and infrastructure limitations, especially on the east coast, and these must be addressed if we are to pursue large-scale renewable energy options,' he said. Marim Chairman Muhammad Faisha Shahriman called on risk professionals to move beyond compliance and become strategic leaders within their organisations. 'We are expected to make sense of changes in regulation, policy, economics and technology and to help organisations respond in ways that are timely, strategic and sound,' he said. Held for the first time in Sabah, the two-day conference attracted over 300 participants and 24 exhibitors, with more than 60 per cent of attendees representing government-linked companies (GLCs). Themed 'The Antifragile Risk Manager – Resourceful, Resilient, Relevant' the event aims to strengthen the capacity of risk leaders to manage complex threats and support sustainable growth. Faisha also highlighted Marim's recent partnership with the UK-based Institute of Risk Management (IRM) to expand global certification pathways for Malaysian professionals. He acknowledged long-standing support from the Labuan International Insurance Association (LIIA) and the Malaysian Insurance and Takaful Brokers Association (MITBA). Participants at the conference include professionals from sectors such as oil and gas, banking, infrastructure, agribusiness, telecommunications, manufacturing and legal services. Key topics being discussed over the two days include ESG, cyber risk, climate transition, corporate governance and risk culture. Local authorities issue 14,834 compounds against foreign-owned businesses
KUALA LUMPUR: Local authorities have issued 14,834 compounds against business premises for offences, including illegal licence transfers to foreigners, since 2023, Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming said. He added that 2,880 premises were sealed, and 23 business licences revoked. 'The Ministry and PBTs have never allowed foreign nationals to apply for or own hawker licences, grocery stores, eateries, or car workshops,' Nga stressed. Speaking in Parliament, he emphasised that hiring foreigners under hawker licences is prohibited, as the government prioritises Malaysian traders. Nga confirmed that PBTs conduct regular inspections, especially in areas with high foreigner presence, and confiscate goods from unlicensed foreign traders. Licences are revoked for misuse, with stricter application conditions imposed to curb foreign-owned businesses. Responding to concerns about Malaysians acting as proxies for foreign spouses, Nga urged citizens to uphold the Rukun Negara principles. 10,000 Local Engineers To Be Trained Under Arm Ltd's 10-Year Semiconductor Programme — Amirudin
BUSINESS SUBANG JAYA, July 28 (Bernama) -- A total of 10,000 local engineers are expected to be trained in the semiconductor field through a training programme by the United Kingdom's semiconductor design firm, Arm Ltd, over 10 years, said Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari. The programme, known as Arm On-Demand, is the first Arm-led training programme in the country and is a strategic collaboration with the Advanced Semiconductor Academy of Malaysia (ASEM), a statement from ASEM said. It is aligned with the country's efforts to accelerate its ambition to develop homegrown chips within five to 10 years due to growing global demand for artificial intelligence (AI) and data centre technologies, the statement said. Amirudin said the initiative targets around 1,000 participants annually, with the first batch of 400 engineers already enrolled. 'So, if we run two or three cohorts, we can reach that target each year,' he told reporters at the programme's launch today. The event's highlight was a partnership signing ceremony between Arm, ASEM and 20 Malaysian universities, a symbolic and unified commitment to advance semiconductor education and research. The programme brings together participants from over 40 universities and engineers representing more than 80 companies across the semiconductor and technology sectors, reflecting strong national interest and commitment to talent development in advanced chip design. Amirudin said the training, which focuses on front-end integrated circuit (IC) design, began earlier this year with the IC Design Part 1 course in Puchong, and positions Malaysia as a leading and sustainable front-end player in the semiconductor industry. As of now, Amirudin said the Selangor state government has committed between RM5 million and RM10 million annually to propel the front end of the semiconductor value chain.
