Ketel Marte's early homer holds up in D-Backs 1-0 win over Rockies

Reuters18-05-2025

May 18 - Ketel Marte homered in the first inning, Merrill Kelly pitched seven scoreless innings and the Arizona Diamondbacks deprived the Colorado Rockies of their first series win of the season with a 1-0 victory in Phoenix on Sunday.
Marte went deep as the second batter of the D-backs' first and Kelly (5-2) gave up only one hit while striking out 11, one short of career high.
Kelly took a no-hitter into the sixth before Rockies' leadoff hitter Jordan Beck grounded a double inside the bag at third on Kelly's 83rd pitch to break it up. Kelly walked three and threw a season-high 109 pitches.
Colorado threatened in the ninth inning, when Kyle Farmer singled off Shelby Miller with one out and Hunter Goodman hit a sinking liner to right field that got past diving right fielder Corbin Carroll for a double.
Ryan McMahon was intentionally walked to load the bases, but Brenton Doyle popped out and Michael Toglia lined out to shortstop. Miller earned his fourth save in six chances.
Marte had two hits and a walk and the D-backs evened their home record at 13-13 entering a three-game series at the Los Angeles Dodgers that begins Monday.
The game stood in stark contrast to the Rockies' 14-12 victory Saturday, when the teams combined for seven homers and 34 hits in Colorado interim manager Warren Schaeffer's first win.
The Rockies fell to 8-38, the worst start in the modern era (since 1901). The 1904 Washington Senators, the 1932 Boston Red Sox and the 1988 Baltimore Orioles all were 9-37.
The Rockies, who lost the series opener 8-0 Friday, have not won or split any of their 15 series. They have been shut out six times.
Kelly has given up four runs in his last three starts (20 1/3 IP) after being forced to leave a May 2 start at Philadelphia because of cramping in his right hamstring.
Rockies' starter Chase Dollander (2-5) gave up one run and three hits before being removed with two outs in the fifth after reaching 98 pitches. He struck out six and walked two.

Club World Cup sees its first red card - but only after referee FORGOT he had already booked Atletico Madrid defender as PSG win 4-0

The Club World Cup saw it's first red card handed out during PSG 's 4-0 win over Atletico Madrid - however it came after a bizarre moment from the match official. The Champions League winners returned to action with an emphatic performance over their Spanish counterparts at the Rose Bowl Stadium in California. Goals from Fabian Ruiz, Vitinha, Senny Mayulu and Kang-In Lee secured the win in their opener however some fans were left talking about one particular incident. In the 77th minute of the match, Atletico defender Clement Lenglet was seen arguing with referee Istvan Kovacs before being shown a yellow card by the official. This caused bemusement among the commentators and fans who were aware that Lenglet had already been shown a yellow card earlier in the match. Kovacs, however, needed a minute to realise and initially walked off after brandishing the caution to the France international. PSG landed the first blow in the Group B clash when Fabian Ruiz fired home from distance in the 19th minute. They doubled their advantage just before halftime when an Antoine Griezmann miss led to a counter-attack that ended with Vitinha firing home under sunny skies in Southern California. The LaLiga side appeared to have pulled one back when Julian Alvarez found the net in the 57th minute but it was overturned after a VAR review. The Spanish side's nightmare continued when defender Clement Lenglet was sent off after receiving a second yellow card and Alexander Sorloth inexplicably missed what should have been a tap-in, instead sending it over the bar. Substitute Senny Mayulu added a third goal for PSG in the 87th minute to end any hopes of an Atletico comeback, while Lee Kang-in fired home a stoppage-time penalty to round off the scoring. PSG will be back at the Rose Bowl on Thursday to face Brazilian team Botafogo while Atletico will travel north to Seattle to take on MLS side the Seattle Sounders. 'The hardest thing to do in football is to maintain the level, not just going high and low,' Vitinha, who was named man of the match, said. 'That's what I tried to do. Very good performance by the team and a very good start to this competition.' PSG were without Frenchman and Ballon d'Or favourite Ousmane Dembele, who suffered an injury while playing for France in the UEFA Nations League earlier this month, but they hardly needed him on Sunday. The historic Rose Bowl in Pasadena was rocking thanks to the 80,000 fans who turned out amid the hot midday sun one year before the U.S. will co-host the World Cup along with Mexico and Canada. 'It was a different environment but it feels good to see so many people in the USA here to watch soccer, or to watch football, as I say,' Vitinha added.
