Emma Raducanu links up with Carlos Alcaraz in new blockbuster partnership
Emma Raducanu will partner Carlos Alcaraz for the revamped mixed doubles tournament at the US Open later this year, with the duo both having won singles titles in New York
Emma Raducanu will link up with Carlos Alcaraz in a blockbuster partnership for the US Open mixed doubles. The event has been revamped in a bid to draw in the crowds and has been moved to the week before the main singles draw gets underway.
An unprecedented list of star names have signed up for the tournament. It includes nine of the world's Top 10 men and nine of the world's Top 10 women, with £739,500 at stake for the winners.
The competition will take place during US Open Fan Week from 19 August at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York. In total, 16 teams have entered as of the time of writing.
The entry window will close on 28 July. At that point, the top eight teams with the best combined singles ranking at the time will officially be in the field/draw via direct acceptance. The remaining eight teams will be determined via wild card.
Headlining the field is Raducanu, who won the women's singles title in Flushing Meadows in 2021, and her partnership with Alcaraz, who has won five Grand Slams, including the 2022 men's US Open and the French Open earlier this month.
Raducanu has previously spoken of her admiration for Alcaraz's free-flowing game and was in the crowd to watch the Spaniard beat Novak Djokovic in last year's Wimbledon final, his second win in London.
"The last couple matches I've been following Carlos, and it's just good to watch before my match," she said. "And sometimes in certain moments you in a way try to emulate certain shots."
Raducanu's last outing in a high-profile mixed doubles partnership drew controversy as she agreed to play with Andy Murray during his final Wimbledon. But she pulled out before their first match, citing a wrist injury.
British men's No.1 Jack Draper will also feature in the event, being partnered with Chinese star Qinwen Zheng. Elsewhere, Nick Kyrgios is set to team up with Naomi Osaka, while world No.1 Jannik Sinner partners Emma Navarro.
There are also three All-American pairs: Jessica Pegula and Tommy Paul; Taylor Townsend and Ben Shelton; Frances Tiafoe and Madison Keys, and last year's mixed doubles champions Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori.
US Open tournament director Stacey Allaster has been left delighted with the calibre of the entrants. She said: "The US Open has long strived to find innovative and new ways to make the game more accessible and entertaining for our fans.
'We believe that this reimagined US Open Mixed Doubles Championship will do exactly that, with the top men and women players in tennis competing side-by-side in a fast-paced, highly competitive format.
"Being able to move this event to a place on the schedule where it is able to take center stage was very important, and with our broadcast partners fully bought-in, more fans than ever before, both in the U.S. and around the globe, will be able to enjoy this incredible competition."

Emma Raducanu stalker caught trying to obtain Wimbledon tickets
The PA news agency understands an application from the individual was discovered in the public ballot before being removed by tournament organisers. His name had been red-flagged and was highlighted by the All England Club's security system. Raducanu hid behind the umpire's chair after receiving repeated unwanted attention from a 'fixated' man at the Dubai Championships in February. At the time, the 22-year-old said she 'couldn't see the ball through tears' and could 'barely breathe', while she revealed the situation was exacerbated by her being unsettled without a full-time coach. She had been aware of the man's presence at previous tournaments in Singapore, Abu Dhabi and Doha before spotting him in the stands during her second-round match against Karolina Muchova. A day earlier, the man, who was removed from the court, handed 2021 US Open champion Raducanu a letter and asked for a photo in a coffee shop. He was given a restraining order by Dubai police and his name was circulated around tennis authorities. Raducanu revealed earlier this month the ordeal had made her 'wary' when going out. She told BBC Sport: 'I'm obviously wary when I go out. I try not to be careless about it because you only realise how much of a problem it is when you're in that situation and I don't necessarily want to be in that situation again.' Raducanu had been previously targeted by a stalker, with an obsessive fan given a restraining order in 2022 after coming to her house three times. This year's Wimbledon Championships are due to get under way on Monday, June 30 and will run until Sunday, July 13.

Emma Raducanu's stalker blocked by Wimbledon after name found in ballot
Emma Raducanu's stalker has been blocked from buying tickets for this month's Wimbledon Championships in the public ballot, it has emerged. Security staff at the All England Club discovered that the man, who has never been named, was on the waiting list when they did a re-sweep of the ballot, after he was given a restraining order in Dubai in February. The authorities in Dubai acted after the British No 1 was forced to hide in tears behind the umpire's chair when the 'fixated' admirer was removed from the stands and detained by police during her second-round match against Karolina Muchova. The previous day the man had given Raducanu a letter and asked for a photograph in a coffee shop. The 22-year-old had also been aware of his presence at tournaments in Singapore, Abu Dhabi and Doha in preceding weeks. Speaking after the incident, Raducanu told reporters: 'I saw him in the first game of the match and I was like, 'I don't know how I'm going to finish'. I literally couldn't see the ball through tears. I could barely breathe. I was like, 'I need to just take a breather.' I'm always with someone and always being watched.' Raducanu, who shot to global fame when she won the US Open as an 18-year-old in 2021, said that her behaviour had changed since the incident in Dubai. 'I'm obviously wary when I go out,' she said. 'I try not to be careless about it because you only realise how much of a problem it is when you're in that situation and I don't necessarily want to be in that situation again.' Raducanu has previously been the victim of a stalker, with another man given a five-year restraining order in 2022 after he walked 23 miles to her home. On Tuesday, Britain's No 2, Katie Boulter, said that she had received abuse and death threats on social media and had been followed around London by an unknown vehicle. Sally Bolton, chief executive of the All England Lawn Tennis Club, said that security measures would be tight at Wimbledon this year. Sign up to The Recap The best of our sports journalism from the past seven days and a heads-up on the weekend's action after newsletter promotion 'We're liaising with the tours, with the Met Police, with other security agencies right through the year to think about the types of risks we need to look at and adjusting what we put in place,' she said. 'I would say to them [players] they should have confidence when they're here and if they are concerned on any basis they should come and talk to us about that because we can put bespoke arrangements in place.' Wimbledon will also have police and military personnel in the grounds, as well a team of fixated threat specialists

Emma Raducanu paired with Carlos Alcaraz for new-look US Open mixed doubles
Emma Raducanu is set to play with Carlos Alcaraz in a star-studded mixed doubles event at the US Open this summer. Traditionally played in the latter stages of grand slams, US Open organisers announced earlier this year they would hold the mixed doubles tournament over two days in the week before the main tournament in an attempt to attract more high-profile players. Advertisement The response was largely negative but the announcement of the first 16 pairs to have entered appears to have justified the move. Raducanu will hope it is more successful than her first mixed doubles attempt at a grand slam last summer with Andy Murray at Wimbledon, where she pulled out ahead of their opening match because of concern over her wrist, denying her partner what would have been a final appearance at the All England Club. It became one of the biggest stories of the tournament, with Raducanu receiving heavy criticism and later apologising to Murray. As well as Alcaraz and Raducanu, British number one Jack Draper has entered with Olympic goal medallist Zheng Qinwen while men's world number one Jannik Sinner will play with American Emma Navarro. The event will take place on August 19th and 20th, with the winners scooping a prize pot of $1 million (€865,000) Not all the pairs announced on Tuesday might make the cut, with entries open until July 28th. The top eight teams with the best combined singles ranking – which currently would not include Raducanu and Alcaraz – will qualify directly, with eight further teams given wild card spots.
