Iran-Israel ceasefire: Some UAE residents resume summer travel plans as airfare dips
A slight decrease in airfares following the announcement of a ceasefire between Iran and Israel has brought welcome relief to UAE residents, many of whom had postponed their summer travel plans due to safety concerns and soaring ticket prices. With stability returning to the region, families are now booking last-minute trips to their home countries, while others are opting for short staycations within the UAE. 'People who didn't book earlier are now going ahead because airfares have come down slightly after the ceasefire,' said Subair Thekepurathvalappil, senior manager at Wisefox Tourism. 'Many who didn't cancel are sticking with their plans, while those who did are rebooking. We have even seen some shift to domestic tourism — there's no longer the same stress around travel." The cancellations were due to weeks of uncertainty sparked by the conflict between Iran and Israel, which escalated dramatically after the US launched missile attacks on the Islamic Republic's nuclear facilities. The conflict led to temporary airspace closures, flight diversions, and widespread concern among travelers. Many residents, especially those with children or elderly parents, decided to postpone their travel plans, fearing the situation could worsen or drag on for weeks. Airlines resume operations However, the announcement of a ceasefire and the rapid resumption of commercial flights have helped restore confidence. Major airlines resumed operations within hours of the ceasefire, and travel demand has since started to normalise. Dubai Airports announced on June 26 that the next two weeks will be exceptionally busy. Dubai International Airport (DXB) is expected to handle over 265,000 passengers daily, with more than 3.4 million travellers passing through between June 27 and July 9. July 5 is projected to be the peak travel day. Emirates Airline also issued a summer travel advisory, estimating over 30,000 outbound passengers per day between June 26 and June 30. Safety in travel For many, the decision to travel again has hinged on timing and caution. Rahul Iyer, a Dubai-based finance professional, had initially planned a family trip to Chennai on June 30. "Once the news of the missile strikes broke out, I held off booking,' he said. "With two young children, I wasn't willing to take any risks,' he said. 'But after the ceasefire was announced and things went back to normal, I wanted to travel. Airfare prices had dipped slightly, so I rebooked for July 3. It just felt right to wait it out.' Others chose to remain in the UAE altogether, prioritising safety over travel. 'When I saw how quickly the situation was escalating, with more countries possibly getting involved, I cancelled our trip to Pakistan,' said Fatima Salim, a resident of BM Tower in Al Nahda, Sharjah. 'We have always seen how the UAE looks after its residents during emergencies, so we felt safer staying here. Maybe we'll do a staycation in Ras Al Khaimah or Fujairah instead," she added. That sense of security and confidence in the UAE's crisis response is something many residents now value more than ever. 'Everything was so uncertain a few days ago. Flights were getting delayed or rerouted, and we didn't want to get stuck abroad,' said Iyer.

The UAE has reaffirmed its commitment to global partnerships and sustainable development goals during a meeting of the board of governors of t he Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) in Beijing. Dr Sultan Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and the UAE governor to the AIIB, participated in the high-level roundtable held on the sidelines of the bank's annual meeting of the board of governors from June 24 to 26. Dr Al Jaber commended AIIB's achievements and its critical role in financing transformative infrastructure projects across member countries. The UAE's support for this strategic partnership aligns with the directives of its leadership, who prioritise multilateral co-operation, economic development and bridge-building among nations, he added. During his meeting with Zou Jiayi, the new president of AIIB, Dr Al Jaber also reaffirmed the UAE's continued support for AIIB's efforts to expand its global impact and noted the bank's success in improving living standards in many countries through developmental support. Based in Beijing, AIIB has 110 members, with the UAE joining as a founding and permanent member in 2015. The UAE also hosts the bank's first operational office outside of China, which was opened at ADGM in 2023. The bank, with $100 billion in total capital, has approved financing exceeding $60 billion to support 318 projects in the past decade. According to its 2024 annual report, the bank approved 51 new projects in 19 member countries, amounting to $8.4 billion in financing. AIIB also made significant progress in climate financing, allocating 67 per cent of its total $5.6 billion in funding to sustainable projects, exceeding its 2025 target of 50 per cent, according to the statement. Among these initiatives were renewable energy projects with a combined capacity of more than 21 gigawatts, contributing to the annual avoidance of approximately 28 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions. Mohamed Al Suwaidi, director general of the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development and alternate governor for the UAE at AIIB said the bank's office at ADGM has proven to be successful in expanding lender's operations.

Sheikh Hamdan unveils air quality plan and support for Emiratis in future job markets
Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, on Thursday chaired the Dubai Executive Council meeting, with education and efforts to boost air quality high on the agenda. The council approved a project to attract top international universities to the emirate while putting together the Academic and Career Guidance Policy. This, Sheikh Hamdan said, will help Emirati students in future job markets with targeted academic and career support, setting a target that 90 per cent of all Emirati graduates will find employment within six months of graduation. Sheikh Hamdan also unveiled a long-term air quality plan as part of a broader drive to bolster the environment and improve quality of life. 'Today, I chaired The Executive Council meeting and approved a set of policies and strategies to reinforce Dubai's position as a global hub for education and future-ready talent,' he wrote on X. 'We approved a project to attract top international universities, aiming to position Dubai among the world's top 10 destinations for undergraduate and postgraduate students.' The aim is for international students to comprise 50 per cent of all university enrolments in Dubai by 2033. The higher education sector is also expected to contribute Dh5.6 billion to the emirate's GDP by this time, Dubai Media Office reports. The initiative aims to establish Dubai as one of the world's top 10 cities for students, with over 70 higher education institutions planned by 2033, including 11 ranked within the top 200 globally. To achieve this, the project sets out to improve student visa systems, new international scholarships, work visas for graduates, and introduce strategies to attract prestigious universities. 'Aligned with His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum's vision for a knowledge-based economy, the project will be implemented in partnership with KHDA and the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism,' Sheikh Hamdan added. 'We also approved the Academic and Career Guidance Policy to help Emirati students thrive in future job markets through targeted academic and career support.' A focus on the environment The Crown Prince of Dubai also revealed the approval of the Air Quality Strategy 2030, while also setting out plans for a new centre to mediate legal disputes. The clean air initiative follows a similar project announced in February, known as the Super Block initiative, which will target urban areas to make them more pedestrian-friendly. It is hoped that this will enhance quality of life, sustainability and boost social interaction between communities. It also aims to reduce carbon emissions by designating car-free residential areas and increasing green spaces. Areas such as Al Fahidi, Abu Hail, Al Karama, and Al Quoz Creative Zone will be the first to be boosted by the initiative. 'Enhancing quality of life remains a key priority. We approved the Air Quality Strategy 2030, which will be implemented by Dubai Environment and Climate Change Authority, in partnership with relevant entities, with the aim of fostering a healthy and safe environment for all,' he continued. 'During the meeting, we also approved the Dubai International Mediation Centre project to provide an efficient and transparent platform for alternative dispute resolution. 'We also approved the Governance Policy for Government Construction Projects to standardise procedures, enhance transparency, strengthen private-sector partnerships, and ensure efficient delivery and high-quality outcomes.'
