Teyana Taylor stuns at 2025 Met Gala in symbolic red suit designed with Ruth E. Carter

Express Tribune05-05-2025

Teyana Taylor made a powerful fashion statement at the 2025 Met Gala, arriving in a symbolic custom look co-designed with legendary Black Panther costume designer Ruth E. Carter.
The theme of the night, 'Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,' was reflected in every inch of Taylor's look, from her tailored pinstripe suit to a dramatic red cape that honored her Harlem roots.
Taylor, 34, wore a three-piece red pinstripe suit with a red vest, silver chain details, and a striking padded cape that featured the words 'Harlem rose' stitched into its flowing train. Silver flower lapel pins, a red fedora with a feather, red leather gloves, and a bright red cane completed the ensemble, making it one of the night's standout looks.
Speaking with Vogue, Taylor shared, 'I'm already not a big dress girl. I'm in suits even without it being a suit theme,' leaning into the evening's menswear-inspired dress code, 'Tailored for You.'
Carter, who won Oscars for her work on Black Panther and Wakanda Forever, helped Taylor style the impactful look and was even spotted adjusting her cape on the carpet. 'As we embarked on our journey in this country, we were stripped of everything… A lot of times the only thing you had was to show it on your body,' Carter told Vogue.
In addition to walking the carpet, Taylor co-hosted the Met Gala livestream for Vogue alongside Ego Nwodim and La La Anthony. Her presence—along with her bold, tailored look—embodied the theme's celebration of Black style, cultural identity, and storytelling through fashion.

Brazil's funk star's arrest sparks censorship debate

The arrest of a popular funk singer in Brazil on suspicion of glorifying a powerful crime gang has revived a long-standing debate over the criminalisation of a genre born in Rio de Janeiro's gritty favelas, or slums. Unlike its US namesake, which was popularised by James Brown, Rio funk borrows more from hip-hop, blended with samba and other Brazilian rhythms. The lyrics, seen by many as celebrating favela drug lords, have repeatedly led to calls for songs to be censored. Last week, MC Poze do Rodo, one of the genre's best-known artists with 16 million followers on Instagram, was arrested on charges of glorifying crime and having links to Comando Vermelho (CV), one of Brazil's biggest gangs. The police argue that Poze's music "clearly condones" drug trafficking and illegal use of firearms and point to concerts held "exclusively in areas dominated by CV, with a notable presence of traffickers armed with high-calibre weapons." After five days in preventive custody, the 26-year-old singer was released on Tuesday to a rapturous welcome from waiting fans, who swarmed his car in a column of motorbikes. Speaking afterwards, the singer claimed he was the victim of police discrimination. "Rio de Janeiro police don't like me... because I'm black? Because I'm from a favela?" Marlon Brendon Coelho Couto was born in the favela of Rodo, one of the biggest in western Rio. He has admitted to selling drugs in his youth but says that he abandoned crime to devote himself to music. Police footage of his arrest at his current home in the upmarket Recreio dos Bandeirantes district, cuffed and shirtless, surrounded by heavily armed officers, caused an outcry among his fans. Fellow musicians took part in a campaign for his release, organised by his wife, influencer Viviane Noronha, on the grounds that "funk singers are not criminals." The debate surrounding funk's role in crime mirrors long-standing discussions in the United States over the links between rap and violence in Black communities. Danilo Cymrot, a doctor in criminology at the University of Sao Paulo, pointed to a "grey area" in the definition of glorification of violence, relating to artistic content. "The artist doesn't necessarily agree with his lyrics," Cymrot, author of a book about Rio funk, said. He added that "oftentimes, the police and the judiciary have a hard time understanding funk as a work of art." As a result, he said, the artist's origins are often used to determine whether he condones violence. "It's less the message itself and more who is singing it."

Ryan Gosling 'White Black Panther Meme' resurfaces amid Marvel Comics' new Ketema revelation

Marvel's recent unveiling of a white character as the new Black Panther has reignited the long-running meme featuring Ryan Gosling as the iconic hero. In the first issue of Marvel Knights: The World To Come (2025), a bold twist sees T'Challa's son, Ketema, taking on the mantle of Black Panther—only to reveal himself as a white man, much to the surprise of fans. This revelation has reignited debates surrounding the character's identity and spurred the meme, which humorously features Gosling in the role of the Wakandan king. Ketema's unmasking as a white young man has raised eyebrows, particularly because Black Panther, in both comic lore and on-screen portrayals (such as by Chadwick Boseman and Letitia Wright), has historically been a Black African character. The reveal, as part of the Marvel Knights series, follows a politically charged storyline set in the wake of T'Challa's death, where Ketema, a product of T'Challa's relationship with Monica Lynne, assumes the throne after defeating his father in a challenge. However, the mystery surrounding Ketema's true parentage has fueled speculation. Some fans question if he is indeed T'Challa's biological son or if another explanation—such as genetic engineering or alternate realities—might be at play. As the character of Ketema steps into a new role in Wakanda, the viral meme depicting Gosling as Black Panther has resurfaced, as fans joke about the possibility of the actor embodying the character on screen. While this meme has circulated for years, with Gosling often being humorously suggested for the role, the comic's plot twist has breathed new life into this online trend. The meme's return reflects the ongoing conversation about the boundaries of cultural identity, legacy, and representation in popular media, especially within the context of Marvel's bold narrative choices. It remains to be seen whether future Marvel Knights issues will provide more clarity about Ketema's origins and his role in Wakanda's future. The controversy and discussion sparked by this creative decision underscore Marvel's willingness to challenge conventions and explore new narratives.
