Hurricane Sandy May Have Affected The Brains of Unborn Children
In October 2012, one of the largest and most destructive storms to emerge from the Atlantic devastated the US and Caribbean.
Hurricane Sandy left deep scars in affected communities, including the loss of more than 250 lives, tens of billions of dollars in damage, and the less tangible – but still potent – effects of stress, grief, and trauma among survivors.
New research suggests the hurricane even affected the unborn children of parents who were pregnant when the superstorm hit. And for those who experienced extreme heat as well as storm stress, the effects may have been compounded.
"To our knowledge, no prior work has examined how exposure to multiple climate-related stressors during pregnancy might work together to shape children's developing brains," says Donato Delngeniis, a neuropsychologist from Queens College in the US who led the investigation.
While hurricanes are a regular feature of the Atlantic Ocean weather system, ongoing human emissions of greenhouse gases are changing the climate in ways that intensify hurricane wind speeds, and exacerbate storm surges – like those that flooded New York City during the hurricane – by raising sea levels.
This is stressful enough to take a toll on anyone, but for people who are pregnant, stressful events like these can affect their babies' development, too.
From 2019 to 2022, Delngeniis's team recruited 34 New York City-born children, around the age of eight, for brain scans to measure the volume of their basal ganglia gray matter. This part of the brain coordinates deliberate movement, procedural and conditional learning, habit formation, cognition, and emotion.
Eleven of the kids in this study were in-utero when Hurricane Sandy made landfall in New York, with flood, winds, and ensuing electrical damage destroying homes. The rest were womb-bound either side of the storm, but not during its onslaught.
Those children who had been exposed to the hurricane in-utero had significantly larger volume in a number of basal ganglia regions, including the putamen and globus pallidus, which are involved in regulating movement, and the right caudate nucleus, which is associated with cognitive and motor functions.
"Despite never personally experiencing these climate events, we are seeing how climate change may be fundamentally altering children's brain development while they are still in the womb," Delngeniis says.
"The noticeable increase in children's brain volume could potentially lead to future behavioral disorders."
Seven of the children exposed to Hurricane Sandy, and 17 of those who weren't, were also exposed to extreme heat (at least one day with a temperature above 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit) at some point while they were developing in the womb. This allowed the researchers to explore the added dimension of extreme heat exposure.
Based on the scans, extreme heat exposure on its own had no notable effect. But when paired with exposure to the hurricane, statistical analysis revealed, extreme heat amplified the adverse effects of hurricane exposure on basal ganglia volume, creating "profound disruptions to the children's developing brains," according to behavioral neuroscientist Yoko Nomura, also from Queens College.
Children exposed to both extreme heat and the hurricane tended to have a larger-than-usual left pallidum and a smaller-than-usual left nucleus accumbens, a structure which is considered the interface between motivation and action.
Given the study's limited sample size and focus on large brain structures, further research would be needed to confirm the findings and determine whether specific stages of development or even sex may play a role in the outcome.
But their implications are concerning in a world where extreme storms and heat waves are becoming commonplace.
"These imaging methods enable us to observe how environmental stressors can cascade through a pregnant mother's experience to reshape the structure of a child's developing brain," says neuroscientist Ahmed Duke Shereen from City University of New York.
"Our findings provide us with compelling evidence that the climate crisis is not merely an environmental crisis – it is a potentially neurological one with consequences for future generations who will inherit our planet."

The world's bread baskets are heating up, threatening the global food supply. Climate change has already shrunk yields for major crops like wheat and maize, and crop losses are likely to worsen in the coming decades. But researchers are trying to avoid that future by helping plants deal with heat. 'There's a lot of excitement in identifying why it is that some crops that are grown in the most extreme conditions are able to survive,' said Carl Bernacchi, a crop researcher at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and the author of one of a trio of papers on crop modification that were published Thursday in the journal Science. Farmers can help crops beat the heat with water-based cooling, but that method has limitations. Modifying crops, either through traditional crossbreeding, artificially sped-up mutation or direct genetic editing, offers control over how plants respond to heat. Photosynthesis, the process through which plants get energy, grinds to a halt between 40 and 45 degrees Celsius, or 104 to 113 degrees Fahrenheit, temperatures that are becoming more common in many of the world's agricultural regions. 'Photosynthesis really dictates the currency plants have to use,' Dr. Bernacchi said. 'If photosynthesis falters, plants run out of energy and die.' Dr. Bernacchi and his co-authors reviewed the potential of editing rubisco, the key enzyme that transforms carbon into sugar, and its partner, rubisco activase. In plants that grow in warm climates, rubisco activase seems to work better at helping rubisco function. How long does a cold last? And how long are you contagious?
Many people think of December and January as the two months of the year you're likely to catch the common cold, but 'cold season' actually stretches from late August through April. That means only about three months of the year, typically May through July, fall outside it. But even during these 'off' months, nearly one in 10 people still catch a cold, according to data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In other words, in any given month, tens of millions of people are walking around with telltale cold symptoms like a stuffy nose, headache, fatigue, sneezing, sore throat and sometimes a cough or low-grade fever. Here's what causes colds to spread so easily, how long they are usually contagious and how they're most commonly treated. What are the main causes of a cold? The common cold is most often caused by a viral infection. Rhinoviruses are the leading culprit, but other viruses such as adenoviruses, certain coronaviruses, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and parainfluenza viruses can also trigger cold symptoms by infecting the upper respiratory tract. 'To catch a cold, you must introduce a cold virus from someone else into your airway,' says Dr. David Hill, a North Carolina-based pediatrician and spokesperson for the American Academy of Pediatrics. This typically happens when infected respiratory droplets are released into the air when a sick person talks, sings, sneezes or coughs. In addition to being inhaled directly, viruses can also land on surfaces and spread when someone touches a contaminated surface and then brushes their nose, eyes or mouth. 'Being in shared spaces often increases the likelihood of transmission,' says Dr. Alison Mitzner, a New York City-based board-certified pediatrician and author of "Calm and Confident Parenting." Other risk factors include a weakened immune system, preexisting health conditions, exposure to cigarette smoke, colder months with lower humidity (which dry out nasal passages) and aging. "Sleep deprivation and fatigue can also make people more susceptible to catching a cold," adds Hill. How long are colds contagious? One of the reasons colds spread so frequently is that they are contagious even before symptoms begin, often one or two days beforehand. After that, "you're usually contagious for as long as you have symptoms, which typically last seven to ten days," says Mitzner. While germs can spread anytime throughout this period, the most viral shedding tends to happen around days four to six. "Know that you can remain contagious for up to two weeks though," she adds. Hill says it's also important to note that "different cold viruses have different levels of contagion." RSV, for example, "is extraordinarily easy to transmit at it can survive on surfaces for hours," he explains. Yes, pneumonia can be contagious. But here's why it depends on the form. How are colds treated? While symptoms can almost always be managed, 'there are no treatments that shorten the duration of a cold,' says Hill. Instead, "every cold just needs to run its course," says Mitzner. To relieve symptoms in the meantime, Hill recommends saltwater nasal rinses for congestion or using nasal decongestants like oxymetazoline if symptoms are especially bad. But he cautions against using them for more than two to three days due to the risk of rebound congestion which, he says, "may be worse than the cold itself." Medications such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen can also reduce fever and alleviate sore throat or headaches but should not be given to very young children without medical advice. For younger kids, Hill recommends honey as a natural cough and sore throat remedy, though he emphasizes that infants and kids under 1 year should never be given honey due to the risk of botulism. 'When you catch a cold, it's important to let your body heal,' says Mitzner. That means rest, hydration and the use of 'a cool-mist humidifier at night to breathe easier.'

Former OceanGate employees slam Titan sub disaster company CEO in new doc: ‘Borderline clinical psychopath'
A damning new documentary condemns Stockton Rush, the founder and CEO of OceanGate, the defunct company whose Titan submersible imploded in the Atlantic Ocean June 2023. Former employees allege in 'Titan: The OceanGate Disaster' on Netflix that their boss' self-absorption and consistent willful negligence tragically led to the death of the five passengers, including Rush — a news story that captured the entire world's attention for days. 'I worked for somebody that is probably [a] borderline clinical psychopath,' said former OceanGate engineer Tony Nissen. 'He wanted to be a Jeff Bezos or Elon Musk,' said Bonnie Carl, director of finance and administration, in the doc. 'He referred to those guys as 'big swingin' dicks,' and he loved that term and used it all the time.' Engineering project manager Emily Hammermeister added that repeatedly expressed safety concerns by workers with years of expertise fell on deaf ears and Rush's tunnel vision. 'Stockton was just so set on getting to the Titanic that nothing that anybody said made much of a difference,' she said. Rush was a wealthy California-born engineer who loved 'Star Wars' and 'Star Trek.' He co-founded OceanGate in 2009 with the goal of bringing deep sea exploration to the public — especially dives to the Titanic. In pursuit of his pipe dream, he decided to create the first submersible made from carbon fiber, a strong and cheap material consisting of many small strands. 'It's not like metal,' said Wired journalist Mark Harris, who profiled Rush. 'You know, titanium is extremely well-understood. Carbon fiber is far more idiosyncratic in that the little fibers inside there can snap.' Knowing the risks, OceanGate engineers built sensors into the hull — a series of small microphones — to alert people in the sub if there were breaches to the carbon fiber so they could quickly surface. In theory. 'The monitoring system for the hull was something that was dreamt up by OceanGate to try and give some comfort to people who were asking too many questions,' said submersible operations expert Rob McCallum. The film terrifyingly shows years of pressure tests conducted on the sub in which the hull cracked and the vehicle imploded. 'Pop' noises of breaks are loud and frequent — portending the loss of life that was to come. 'I just can't believe it,' Rush angrily reacted during a trial five years before their first dive. 'We couldn't even get past f – – king 4,300 PSI.' Eventually, Titan successfully reached the Titanic — in spite of persistent safety issues. 'It was a mathematical certainty that it would fail,' said McCallum. 'So, having a dive or two or 10 to the Titanic is not a measure of success. And personally I will never understand how it survived the first test dives.' Lochridge emailed Rush and others a safety report in 2018, and was called into a contentious meeting the next day. Rush recorded the interaction. 'I don't want anybody in this company who is uncomfortable with what we're doing,' said an irate Rush. 'We're doing weird s – – t here, and I am definitely out of the mold. There's no question. I'm doing things that are completely non-standard. And I'm sure the industry thinks I'm a f – – king idiot. That's fine. They've been doing that for eight years. And I'm going to continue on the way I'm doing, but I'm not going to force people to join my religion if they don't want to.' Reacting to Lochridge's report, an angry Rush told Nissen, his engineer, that 'it would be nothing for him to spend $50,000 to ruin somebody's life.' 'That changed my life in that company,' said Nissen. 'I had to make sure nobody spoke up.' Nissen, Lochridge, Hammermeister and Carl went on to all leave the troubling company. Carl was pushed over the edge when Rush brazenly suggested she assume the role of lead pilot. 'Are you nuts? I'm an accountant,' she remembered thinking. On June 18, 2023, one hour and 33 minutes into a dive, the Titan lost communication with the surface. A four-day search ensued and voracious news outlets displayed countdown clocks of when the sub would run out of oxygen. Debris was finally discovered on June 22. The Titan had actually imploded the same day it ceased pinging. The passengers — Rush, Hamish Harding, Paul-Henri Nargeolet, Suleman Dawood and Shahzada Dawood — all died. Hammermeister still feels shaken up by her association with OceanGate. 'I've reflected a lot on my time there,' she said. 'And my time there was not normal. I mean, I think back to the times where I was part of dives that happened. And thinking back how uncomfortable I felt bolting people into the sub. And so when that initial news article popped up and it said 'Tourist sub lost in the Atlantic,' I knew right away it was OceanGate.' Lochridge said the tragedy was a result of Rush's narcissism. 'He wanted fame,' he said. 'First and foremost to fuel his ego, fame. That was what he wanted. And he's got it.'
