Illini done waiting, time to play in NCAA

Yahoo21-03-2025
MILWAUKEE, Ill. (WMBD/WYZZ) — The Illini are tired of playing the waiting game.
Now it's time to play a game. In the NCAA Tournament.
Illinois faces Xavier in one of the final games of the NCAA Tournament on Friday at 8:45 p.m. The Illini got familiar with Fiserv Forum with a shootaround at the home of the Milwaukee Bucks on Thursday.
For many of the Illini players, Friday's game will mark their first taste of the NCAA Tournament.
'It's an incredible blessing to be able to do this. To be able to do what — as a kid– you dream about doing,' said Illinois senior Ben Humrichous, a transfer from Evansville. 'This is a team that is starting to understand the urgency of the end. (Friday) night when we go out there, we have to go out with a punch.'
The Illini had to wait until Wednesday night to know their first round opponent. Xavier beat Texas in one of the 'First Four' games in Dayton to advance to Milwaukee.
No more waiting, it's time to play.
'Everybody understands how important every win is now. We have to focus on the game ahead,' said Illinois freshman Morez Johnson. 'Everyone understands that now. It's our time to make a run.'
You can see the game on WMBD at 8:45 p.m. Friday.

Bears work out 3 running backs including Royce Freeman

For the second time in less than two weeks, the Chicago Bears are searching for running backs. According to NFL insider Aaron Wilson, the Bears tried out a handful of running backs on Tuesday as they continue to lose players at the position due to injury. Wilson notes the Bears worked out Royce Freeman, Kylin James, and Dillon Johnson. Freeman is the most notable name of the group, who came into the league as a third-round pick back in 2018 with the Denver Broncos. Despite a promising start to his career when he rushed for over 500 yards and scored five rushing touchdowns his rookie season, Freeman never lived up to expectations and has bounced around the league in recent years. He's had stops with the Carolina Panthers, Houston Texans, Los Angeles Rams, and the Dallas Cowboys. He did not play a regular season down in 2024. Freeman has rushed for 1,792 yards and 10 touchdowns throughout his career. James was a running back prospect who entered the 2025 NFL Draft. He spent three seasons at Central Arkansas and played his final collegiate season at UNLV, where he totaled 653 rushing yards and five touchdowns. James has had workouts with a few NFL teams but has yet to latch on anywhere. Johnson, meanwhile, entered the league as an undrafted free agent in 2024. He initially joined the Tennessee Titans but also spent time with the Carolina Panthers last season on their practice squad. Johnson has yet to appear in an NFL regular season game. The tryouts come following the Bears' second preseason game, a 38-0 blowout win over the Buffalo Bills, where they were shorthanded at running back. D'Andre Swift and Travis Homer were unavailable for Sunday's game, while Roschon Johnson has been out with a foot injury for the last few weeks. Rookie Kyle Monangai missed the game due to an injury of his own, and undrafted rookie Deion Hankins left early in the first quarter after suffering a leg injury. The Bears had just two running backs available for the majority of the game: Ian Wheeler and Brittain Brown, who signed with the team just one week ago. With their final preseason game scheduled for Friday evening, the Bears need healthy players at the position on a short week. Perhaps one of these three will get signed and see action against the Kansas City Chiefs. Either way, the Bears need to get their running back room healthy before Week 1 comes around. Caissie homers as the Cubs hold off the Brewers for a 6-4 win in doubleheader opener

Owen Caissie homered and drove in three runs, and the Chicago Cubs held off the Milwaukee Brewers for a 6-4 win in the opener of a split doubleheader on Tuesday. Willi Castro also went deep as Chicago won for the third time in four games. Four Cubs relievers combined for 3 2/3 innings of two-hit ball after Matthew Boyd (12-6) departed in the sixth. Chicago (71-54) pulled within eight games of NL Central-leading Milwaukee (79-46). The teams were originally scheduled for a doubleheader on Monday, but the second game was postponed by rain. Christian Yelich homered for Milwaukee, and Sal Frelick had two hits and two RBIs. It was just the third loss for the Brewers in their last 21 games. Chicago built a 5-0 lead on Caissie's two-run single in the first and Castro's three-run shot off Chad Patrick (3-8) in the third. It was Castro's first homer since he was acquired in a July 31 trade with Minnesota. But Milwaukee quickly started chipping away at the deficit. Yelich opened the fourth with his 26th homer, and Frelick singled home Brandon Lockridge in the fifth. Frelick added another RBI single in a two-run sixth. Caissie then gave the Cubs a boost with his first major league homer, a 381-foot drive to left-center off Shelby Miller that made it 6-4 in the bottom half of the sixth. The 23-year-old Caissie singled in the seventh inning of Monday's 7-0 loss in the series opener for his first big league hit. Caleb Thielbar and Drew Pomeranz each pitched an inning for Chicago before Daniel Palencia handled the ninth for his 17th save in 19 chances. The Brewers had runners on second and third with two out in the sixth when Brad Keller struck out Caleb Durbin swinging, preserving the Cubs' 5-4 lead. The Cubs improved to 5-5 in the season series against the Brewers. Brandon Woodruff (4-0, 2.06 ERA) starts for Milwaukee in the second game, and fellow right-hander Jameson Taillon (7-6, 4.44) pitches for Chicago.
