Parliament Monsoon Session: LS adjourned till 2 pm, RS for the day amid Opposition uproar
According to an opposition leader, notices have been given for adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha and under Rule 267 in the Rajya Sabha demanding discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in Bihar.
Rule 267 of the Rajya Sabha pertains to the suspension of a specific rule to allow for a motion on a particular matter.
The opposition leader said they have pointed out in the notices that the exercise requires people to provide citizenship proof, which is ultra vires of the Constitution.
They have also mentioned that the EC's move may potentially infringe upon rights of Parliament as Article 11 empowers Parliament to regulate the right to citizenship by law.
INDIA bloc parties have been demanding a discussion on SIR and have also staged multiple protests inside and outside Parliament during the ongoing Monsoon session.
The Opposition is also planning to take out a march to the Election Commission of India headquarters next week.

EC asks Tejashwi to hand over voter ID for investigation: ‘Not issued officially'
Patna/New Delhi: The Election Commission (EC) on Sunday asked Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav to 'hand over for investigation' a voter ID card that he claimed to be in possession of despite having been 'not issued officially', in a development that came a day after the Leader of Opposition in the Bihar assembly claimed that his voter ID card was not available in the new draft electoral roll. (ANI Photo)(Rahul Sharma) Meanwhile, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lashed out at Yadav, alleging that the RJD leader had two EPIC (Election Photo Identity Card) numbers and two Voter IDs, and termed his accusation against EC a 'conspiracy to defame India.' Addressing a press conference in Patna on Saturday, Yadav demonstrated an online search, with the EPIC number RAB2916120, to claim that his name was missing in the draft electoral rolls published as part of special intensive revision (SIR). EC, however, later clarified that Yadav's officially registered EPIC number was RAB0456228 and he had used the same in his 2020 election affidavit. 'Our preliminary investigation suggests that the EPIC number you mentioned at the press conference on August 2 was not issued officially. You are therefore requested to hand over the EPIC card in original for detailed investigation,' the sub divisional magistrate of Patna Sadar-cum-electoral registration officer for Digha assembly constituency said in a letter to Yadav. Later, the RJD leader alleged that his EPIC number had been 'changed', but the same was refuted by Patna district magistrate Thiyagaraja SM. 'The EPIC number in the electoral rolls is the one that was submitted by the honourable leader of the opposition in his affidavit in the 2020 assembly polls. If he is in possession of another EPIC card with another number as well, then it is a matter of investigation,' the DM said. The ruling BJP lashed out at the Opposition over this issue, with party lawmaker Sambit Patra accusing Tejashwi Yadav of spreading misinformation about the electoral process. 'This means he (Tejashwi Yadav) had two EPIC numbers... Did he have two voter IDs? The way in which Congress and RJD are scathing an attack on the EC, is a conspiracy to defame India,' Patra told reporters in Delhi. Though Yadav did not make any comment on the letter issued by the SDO Patna Sadar till Sunday evening, RJD spokesperson Chittaranjan Gagan alleged that the letter to the Opposition leader was a ploy by EC to divert attention from the questions raised by Yadav regarding alleged anomalies in the SIR exercise. '...In the draft rolls issued in which Tejashwi's name figures with a particular house number, several other electors' names having different surnames have been mentioned having the same house number. Does one family have members with different surnames? This must be clarified by ECI,' Gagan said.

Man dies by suicide in Kolkata, family claims he was living in fear of NRC
Kolkata: A 63-year-old man was found hanging in his residence in Kolkata on Sunday morning, with his family claiming that he had been living in fear that he would be sent to Bangladesh if the National Register of Citizens (NRC) was implemented. The victim worked as a non-teaching staff member at a private school in Dhakuria in south Kolkata.(For representation/PTI) Initial probe revealed that the deceased, Dilip Kumar Saha, had arrived in Kolkata in 1972 from Nawabganj in Dhaka and had been living in Anandapally West in the Regent Park area, a police officer said. Saha worked as a non-teaching staff member at a private school in Dhakuria in south Kolkata. "This morning, his wife called him several times, but received no response from inside his locked room. She then called their niece-in-law from a neighbouring house. They broke open the door to find him hanging from the ceiling fan," the officer said. The deceased's wife Arati Saha said her husband had been worried that he would be deported to Bangladesh after implementation of the NRC. "He has been under severe stress for quite some time regarding this. There was no other tension. He came to Kolkata in his childhood. He was afraid that he would be sent to a detention camp and then pushed back to Bangladesh, where he had nobody. He had valid voter ID card and other documents," she said. It is suspected that this fear led him to take his own life, the police officer said, adding that a suicide note has been recovered from the room. The matter is being investigated, the officer said. Power Minister and local Trinamool Congress MLA Arup Biswas reached the place and spoke to the family members. "This is what the fear of being thrown out of the country could do to a man. What they (Centre) have started in the name of the SIR shows their anti-people attitude, and the result is in front of you," Biswas said.

CM to address MPs as TMC raises protest pitch
1 2 Kolkata: With Trinamool stepping up its attack on the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and harassment of Bengali-speaking migrants back home, CM Mamata Banerjee will speak to her MPs virtually on Monday to outline TMC's strategy for the week. The CM's address comes at a time TMC is raising its protest pitch, both in Delhi and Bengal. TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee is expected to address 9,000 party workers on Aug 5. He will also be part of INDIA bloc MPs' protest march to Nirvachan Sadan this week. BJP has stalled any discussion on SIR in Parliament for the last 10 days, said TMC's Rajya Sabha leader Derek O'Brien. "The SIR vote 'chori' as a subject can easily be discussed in both Houses. BJP is scared. We will give the shaky Modi coalition a tutorial in Parliament and teach them how it can be discussed," he said. On Sunday, TMC MPs submitted notices on the issue of Delhi Police calling the Bengali language the Bangladeshi language, demanding a discussion in Parliament. Speaking at a presser at Trinamool Bhawan, state education minister Bratya Basu said: "They (BJP) are forgetting that it is because of the Bengali language that a new country was formed. Twenty-five crore people speak this language. Our national anthem and the national songs of two countries have been written in this language." "This is a UNESCO-recognised language and one of the first seven languages of the world. When Tamil Nadu got statehood, people gave their lives in a hunger strike. Even today, you can't enter Tamil Nadu while speaking Hindi. But you can speak all languages in Bengal. CM Mamata Banerjee even fights for Toto or Rajbanshi languages," Basu said. "This Hindi imposition goes against the vision of India. You cannot insult Bengali. You cannot label us as a citizen of some other nation. Hindi is a great language, but why are you insulting our Rabindranath Tagore, our DL Ray, our Nazrul Islam?" he added. Urging Bengal BJP netas to speak up, Basu said: "BJP netas in Bengal, even if you speak in Bengali, speak up against this discrimination."
