Little League World Series player calls out Shohei Ohtani as 'not really humble' after encounter
Australia's Monica Arcuri revealed an interaction with Ohtani that led her to believe he is "not really humble."
Arcuri was featured on ESPN's "Sunday Night Baseball" KidsCast during the New York Mets-Seattle Mariners game Sunday in Williamsport, Pa., the host city of the Little League World Series. During her interview, the Brisbane native described attending a Los Angeles Angels game in Anaheim in 2023.
During that game, Ohtani — then still a member of the Angels — homered off Toronto Blue Jays starter Yusei Kikuchi.
"He hit a home run into an area where the fans couldn't go, and then this guy got the ball and gave it to my brother," Arcuri explained on the broadcast. "So, the next day we went to the VIP box at the front, and I asked for [Ohtani's] signature, but all he gave me was a side-eye and not a nice glance.
"So, after that, I've never liked him ever since. He's not really humble. Not my style."
That season was Ohtani's last in an Angels uniform before the Dodgers swooped in with a then-record 10-year, $700 million contract, though $680 million of it was deferred.
Ohtani's first season with the Dodgers ended with an NL MVP Award and a World Series ring after defeating the New York Yankees in five games in the "Fall Classic."
However, Ohtani has faced off-the-field controversies since last season.
First, his former interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara, was imprisoned for stealing nearly $17 million from the Japanese star to pay off gambling debts.
Ohtani publicly addressed the scandal in late March before the start of his inaugural Dodgers season, saying he had never placed a sports bet and that Mizuhara's story about paying off his $4.5 million gambling debt was fabricated.
More recently, Ohtani and his agent, Nez Balelo, made headlines after being sued by a Hawaii real estate investor and broker for allegedly causing their firing from a $240 million luxury housing development.
Meanwhile, it appears Arcuri enjoyed her time in Williamsport despite Australia being eliminated from the international bracket after a 12-0 loss to Canada on Sunday. Australia opened with a 7-2 loss to Panama before bouncing back with a 5-3 win over Europe-Africa on Saturday to avoid early elimination.
Arucir became the 24th girl to play in the Little League Baseball World Series, and the 11th to record a hit.

Gurriel and McCarthy lead Diamondbacks to 6-5 win over Guardians
PHOENIX (AP) — Lourdes Gurriel Jr. drove in three runs, Jake McCarthy hit a solo homer and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Cleveland Guardians 6-5 on Tuesday night. McCarthy finished with two hits and Corbin Carroll tripled twice, his fourth game this season with two triples. Diamondbacks starter Eduardo Rodriguez gave up four runs on five hits and three walks in 6 2/3 innings. Juan Burgos (1-0) got one out to earn his first major league win. The 25-year-old rookie entered with two outs and a runner on first in the seventh, gave up a double to Angel Martínez and intentionally walked José Ramírez before pinch-hitter Kyle Manzardo grounded out to end the inning. Jed Stuart speaks out as father Ricky could be forced to axe son for NRL finals
Jed Stuart insists it's 'team-first' at the Raiders after addressing a brutal dilemma for his father and coach Ricky Stuart, who could be set to drop the winger ahead of Canberra's NRL finals campaign. The young Stuart has done a superb job filling in for Raiders speedster Savelio Tamale, who has been sidelined since round 14 with a knee injury. Tamale was in 'rookie of the year' calculations until suffering a dislocated kneecap in horror scenes during Canberra's big win over the Rabbitohs in June. Tamale scored six tries in his 14 games for the Raiders before suffering the injury. And he was leading the competition in tackle busts at one point during a brilliant start to his Canberra career, having played one NRL game with the Dragons in 2024. Tamale is expected to return for the Raiders in their round 26 clash against the Wests Tigers, in what will be a massive boost for the Raiders before the finals. But it also puts the Canberra coach in a tricky situation, with his son the most likely player to be dropped when Tamale returns. "It'll probably be hard on him but I'll take none of it personally," Jed said about the selection dilemma facing his father and coach. "Whoever the coaching staff pick to go there will do a job, which I think is what me and 'Savie' have both proved. "We're there to do a job and we've both done a pretty good one. The rangy winger - who is 20cm taller than his famous father - is physically very different from the Raiders coach and three-time premiership-winning halfback who is a club legend at Canberra. But he's always shared a similar love of the Raiders as his dad, even if the young Stuart doesn't wear his emotions on his sleeve quite as much. "His passion for the club rubs off on me, especially at home," the 24-year-old said. "Our whole family loves it here. I'm not to the extent where I'll get emotional talking about little things like he does, but I care a lot." with AAP
