Democratic lawmaker pleads not guilty to assaulting US agents at immigration center
Democratic U.S. Representative LaMonica McIver pleaded not guilty on Wednesday to charges she assaulted and impeded federal agents outside an immigration detention center in New Jersey, the lawmaker said in a social media post.
McIver, who represents a district in northern New Jersey, was indicted on three federal counts after prosecutors said she struck two Department of Homeland Security agents with her forearms during a scuffle on May 9.
McIver was conducting an oversight visit along with two other Democratic members of Congress at a privately run detention center in Newark, New Jersey. She resisted agents who tried to arrest the city's mayor, Ras Baraka, for trespassing at the facility, according to a criminal complaint.
The charge against Baraka was later dropped.
McIver has denied the allegations and accused President Donald Trump's administration of political intimidation.
"To all who stand up to this administration—do not back down," McIver wrote following her court appearance. "The facts are on our side." REUTERS

Ecuador recaptures gang leader 'Fito' indicted by U.S.

GUAYAQUIL - Ecuador's most-wanted fugitive, the leader of the Los Choneros criminal group, has been recaptured after escaping jail last year, President Daniel Noboa said on Wednesday. Jose Adolfo Macias, known as "Fito," disappeared from the Guayaquil prison where he was being held in January 2024, amid an explosion of violence including the on-air invasion of a television station by armed men and the hostage-taking of more than 200 prison officials. "My recognition to our police and military who participated in this operation. More will fall, we will reclaim the country. No truce," said Noboa, whose government had offered a reward of $1 million for information leading to Macias' capture, on X. Noboa said Ecuador had requested Macias be extradited to the U.S., where he is set to face international drug and gun charges in a federal court in New York. Macias was sentenced in 2011 to 34 years in prison for various crimes including drug trafficking and murder. The United States imposed sanctions on Los Choneros last year, saying they have been involved in drug trafficking since the 1990s and accusing the group of being a key driver of escalating violence in the country since 2020, including within overcrowded prisons. Trump-backed crypto firm is planning stablecoin audit, new app

[NEW YORK] Zak Folkman, the co-founder of US President Donald Trump's cryptocurrency platform World Liberty Financial (WLF), said on Wednesday (Jun 25) that the company will issue an audit of its stablecoin 'within days' and that it planned a new app. Folkman also hinted that WLF's governance token, known as WLFI, could soon become tradable in an interview at the Permissionless conference on Wednesday, organised by crypto media company Blockworks in Brooklyn, New York. WLFI, which was launched two months before the US presidential election in November by Trump and his business partners, has yielded hundreds of millions of US dollars in revenue for the Republican president's family business. The business, along with other forays into crypto, has drawn a barrage of criticism from Democratic lawmakers, as well as government ethics watchdogs. Critics say it creates conflicts of interest as it is happening at the same time as the president is pulling back enforcement and easing regulations on the industry. The Trump Organization said in January that the president's investments, assets and business interests would be held in a trust managed by his children. The White House and the Trump Organization did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Sign Up Sign Up World Liberty has raised the money by selling so-called governance tokens, which give holders the right to vote on changes to the project's underlying code and to signal their opinion on its direction and plans. They cannot be traded. During the interview on Wednesday, when Blockworks co-founder Jason Yanowitz asked whether the token would become tradable, Folkman said: 'I don't want to give away too much, but if you pay attention over the next couple of weeks, I think everyone ... is going to be very, very happy.' Folkman said that WLF would also be launching an app that would make crypto seamless for everyday investors to use. He said the company's stablecoin recently just got its first attestation report from an accounting firm and that it would be posted on its website 'within the next few days'. 'We are going to have very transparent auditing from a financial level,' he said. REUTERS

Tech lobby group urges EU leaders to pause AI Act

Europe's landmark AI rules entered into force in June 2024 with various provisions to be implemented in a phased manner. PHOTO: REUTERS STOCKHOLM - Tech lobbying group CCIA Europe, whose members include Alphabet, Meta and Apple, on June 26 urged European Union to pause implementation of the AI Act, saying a rushed roll-out risks jeopardising the continent's AI aspirations. Europe's landmark AI rules entered into force in June 2024 with various provisions to be implemented in a phased manner. Important provisions of the EU AI Act, including rules for general purpose AI (GPAI) models, were due to apply on August 2. But some parts of the GPAI, which were expected to be published on May 2, got delayed. 'With critical parts of the AI Act still missing just weeks before rules kick in, we need a pause to get the Act right, or risk stalling innovation altogether,' said Mr Daniel Friedlaender, CCIA Europe's senior vice-president. Political leaders such as Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson have also called AI rules 'confusing' and asked the EU to pause the Act, ahead of a meeting with other EU leaders in Brussels on June 26. More than two-thirds of European businesses said they struggle to understand their responsibilities under the EU AI Act, according to a survey by Amazon Web Services. The EU AI Act is more comprehensive than the United States' light-touch voluntary compliance approach while China's approach aims to maintain social stability and state control. 'We are currently implementing the AI Act,' EU tech chief Henna Virkkunen told EU lawmakers earlier in June when asked if she would consider a temporary halt to enforcing the AI Act. 'I want to implement it in a very innovation friendly manner ... the main concern among some stakeholders is that this is hindering innovations.'
