BELLINGHAM, Wash. - A husband and wife exploring Bellingham Bay last week had an unexpected encounter with a giant Pacific octopus in a tidepool, just steps from the shore.
Captured on video by Micah Moeller, the octopus was so close to the couple that they could have touched it. This rare sighting has captivated the internet, with the video garnering over 20 million views.

Giant Pacific octopuses, known for their massive size and impressive eight arms with 200 suckers each, are typically nocturnal creatures, according to the Seattle Aquarium. To see one out and about during the day is a surprising and unusual experience for those familiar with the region.

American sprinter Christian Coleman defended his girlfriend Sha'Carri Richardson after the Olympic track and field star was arrested for domestic violence at the Seattle–Tacoma International Airport last month. An officer that reviewed camera footage observed that Richardson grabbed Coleman's backpack and yanked it and that Coleman was shoved into a wall. Sha'Carri Richardson arrested for alleged assault of boyfriend days before US championships
Olympic gold medalist Sha'Carri Richardson was arrested last weekend for allegedly assaulting her boyfriend. The couple were at the Seattle Tacoma Airport on Sunday when an officer at the airport was notified by a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) supervisor of a disturbance between Richardson and her boyfriend, sprinter Christian Coleman, according to the police report, via The Associated Press. Richardson is alleged to have grabbed Coleman's backpack and yanked it and shoved Coleman into a wall and apparently was caught on surveillance. The report later said that Richardson appeared to throw an item at Coleman, which the TSA indicated may have been headphones. In the police report, the officer said: "I was told Coleman did not want to participate any further in the investigation and declined to be a victim." The 25-year-old Richardson was booked into the South Correctional Entity (SCORE) in Des Moines, Washington, at 6:54 p.m. last Sunday and released Monday at 1:13 p.m. This isn't Richardson's first controversy at an airport. The track star was booted off a plane in January 2023 after a dispute with a flight attendant who she said spoke to her in a disrespectful manner. Richardson won the 100 at the 2023 world championships in Budapest and finished with the silver in the event at the Paris Games last summer. She also helped take the 4x100 relay to an Olympic gold. The 25-year-old was going to compete in Tokyo four years ago, but she tested positive for cannabis. The incident occurred at a TSA checkpoint where Richardson and a man got into an argument, according to the report detailed by the arresting officer. After viewing security footage, police found that Richardson allegedly pushed the man, and he fell into a nearby column. The video also allegedly showed the man attempting to walk away from Richardson. Richardson also threw a pair of headphones at him, police say. Richardson was booked at the South Correctional Entity in Des Moines, Washington, on Sunday and released on Monday, according to jail records. The man told police Richardson was his girlfriend. He didn't want to pursue charges, police said. CBS News reached out to Richardson's agent. Police said Richardson was scheduled to fly to Eugene, Oregon, which is where the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships are taking place through Sunday. Richardson earned her first Olympic gold medal in 2024 at the Paris Olympics as part of Team USA's 4x100-meter relay team. She also secured a silver medal in the 100 in 2024. At the 2020 Olympic trials, Richardson won the 100 but was later suspended for testing positive for marijuana. At the time, Richardson said she used the substance after learning from a reporter that her biological mom had died.
