"Don't make excuses like shortage of teachers...": Karnataka CM directs officials to expedite work in education sector
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah
on Saturday issued strict instructions to Deputy Commissioners (DCs), Chief Executive Officers (CEOs), and education officials during a high-level review meeting on the state's school education system.
The CM warned against poor SSLC results, delay in infrastructure work, falling enrollment in government schools, and inaction on child marriage and teenage pregnancy cases.
At the beginning of the meeting, Siddaramaiah reviewed the performance of the School Education Department and pulled up districts that failed to perform.
"Don't make excuses like shortage of teachers or staff for poor SSLC results. Only districts like Dakshina Kannada and a few others are showing good results. DDPI officers must take responsibility. DCPIs and District In-charge Secretaries must visit schools and conduct inspections. It should be verified whether teachers are working with interest or not. Do not give unnecessary excuses. If teachers and DDPI officers work with dedication, good results will be achieved everywhere," he said.
He also expressed displeasure over delays in classroom construction under the Viveka scheme despite funds being released.

"Under the Viveka scheme, there should be no delay in sanctioning funds for classroom construction. Action plans should be prepared immediately. Though funds have been released, construction of classrooms has still not begun in some places," Siddaramaiah said.
Highlighting the issue of declining student enrollment in government schools, he said officials must engage with parents and ensure no child drops out.
"To prevent a decline in student enrollment in government schools, teachers and officials must communicate with parents. Everything possible must be done to prevent dropouts. District in-charge secretaries must monitor whether

and BEOs are visiting schools. The annual decline in government school enrollments is a bad trend. The government is providing eggs, milk, ragi malt, soup, and hostel facilities, yet enrollments are falling. Find out from officials what practical issues are contributing to this and take necessary action to resolve them," the CM instructed.
Taking a strict stand, Siddaramaiah directed the Chief Secretary to take disciplinary action against poor-performing education officers.
"Strict instructions are being given to the CEOs, district collectors, and district in-charge secretaries of those districts where exam results and enrollment rates are below the state average. The situation must improve by the next academic year," he said.
"CEOs from Kalyana Karnataka and Hyderabad Karnataka districts must show more interest and monitor the situation closely. Reasons and excuses for poor results are not important; achieving results is. Honest efforts will yield honest outcomes," he added.
Turning to the issue of child marriage and teenage pregnancy, the CM instructed officials to treat such cases with urgency and legal seriousness.
"Don't you feel that child marriage and teenage pregnancy cases should be prevented effectively?" he asked, questioning the commitment of officials.
He stated that such issues were more common in backward areas and among vulnerable communities and must be tackled with strict monitoring.
"Child marriage and teenage pregnancy cases shouldn't be taken lightly. File criminal cases," the Chief Minister emphasised.
He further warned that PDOs and revenue staff who fail to submit reports would face action.

BENGALURU: POINTING to the high dropout rate of 22.1% among high school students in Karnataka, which is much higher than the national average of 14.1%, the People's Alliance for Fundamental Right to Education (PAFRE) has written to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, asking him to focus on solving 'long-term' problems in the education system instead of blaming officials for the poor SSLC results. PAFRE welcomed the CM's concern, expressed during a recent review meeting, over the fall in SSLC pass percentages, especially in backward regions like Kalyana Karnataka. However, the group said that reprimanding education officers alone won't help improve results. Instead, it stressed the need to improve the overall learning system from Class 1 to Class 10, especially in government and aided schools where most children come from poor and disadvantaged families. Chief convenor of the group Professor Niranjanaradhya VP explained that exam results are just the final stage and if children do not receive quality education and support from the beginning, expecting better results is unfair. He added that the current system does not give students the learning environment, teachers, and leadership. 'Karnataka's high school dropout rate must be addressed immediately if the government wants to see long-term improvements,' he said. The RTE group asked the state government to prepare a three-year action plan to bring all schools up to standard.

School association condemns government's disciplinary actions
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah Karnataka Private School Managements Training Expressing strong concern and disappointment, the state's school association has written to, opposing the recent move to issue notices to District Deputy Directors of Public Instruction (DDPIs) over poor Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) results in certain districts. Siddaramaiah on Saturday had instructed the Chief Secretary to issue formal notices to the Deputy Directors of Public Instruction (DDPIs) in districts where the SSLC exam results were below 60%. The CM further directed that if the responses to these notices are found unsatisfactory, strict action should be taken against the concerned a letter to the CM, the association stated that while accountability is essential, punitive actions against officials without a thorough understanding of systemic issues amount to misplaced priorities. 'Issuing notices to DDPIs may appear to be a corrective measure, but it overlooks deep-rooted policy failures and long-standing ground-level challenges,' the letter noted.'We criticise the absence of structured consultation with teachers, school heads, and education experts, despite multiple comparative studies and reports being submitted to the government. We stress that the recent dip in SSLC performance is not a reflection of individual negligence but the result of systemic shortcomings,' said Shashi Kumar D, General Secretary of Associated Managements of Primary and Secondary Schools in Karnataka (KAMS) and Convenor of, Teaching & Non Teaching Staff Co-ordination Committee (KPMTCC). He said that these include the lack of continuous reforms at foundational levels, the poor implementation of the National Council of Educational Research and(NCERT) based spiral curriculum, the failure of the Nali-Kali framework, and the ineffectiveness of District Institutes of Education and Training (DIETs) in providing relevant pedagogical like CRPs, BEOs, and DDPIs, the letter stated, are often overburdened with administrative tasks, leaving little room for academic mentoring. 'When the system prioritises showing results over genuine learning, it breeds artificial performance and data manipulation—practices that endanger long-term educational integrity,' the association also raised concerns about the overuse of grace marks, calling it a band-aid solution that conceals the underlying learning crisis. Instead, they proposed the introduction of a more meaningful internal assessment system aligned with NCERT methodologies, starting from early grades. Calling the crisis 'a systemic challenge, not an individual lapse,' the association urged the Chief Minister to halt demoralising disciplinary actions and instead focus on deeper said that there is a need for review of education policy in line with the 2019 Right To Education (RTE) amendment, along with foundational literacy and numeracy (FLN) programmes to revive quality education at the primary level. 'There is also a need for creation of an apolitical, consultative platform comprising MLAs from teachers' and graduates' constituencies, education experts, senior officials, and teacher associations to guide long-term education reforms,' he said.

Somanna slams Siddaramaiah for implicating farmers opposing Hemavathi link canal project
In a sharp political swipe, Minister of State for Railways V. Somanna on Sunday criticised Chief Minister Siddaramaiah saying he has become like 'a train that missed the village station.' 'The old Siddaramaiah is lost. He may take 10 steps forward, but then retreats 50 steps backward under pressure,' he said, while responding to media questions in Kalaburagi about the Hemavati Link Canal Project in Tumakuru. Accusing the State government of stagnation and political favouritism, the Central Minister condemned the Congress government for implicating farmers who are opposing the project. 'The State government is acting like stagnant water, trying to appease some while punishing others unjustly. Why are poor farmers being targeted with criminal cases? What wrong have they done? The State government should stop harassing people. Officials who once declared the project unfeasible are now saying it's possible, just to protect their positions,' he said urging the State government to work with Central irrigation experts to resolve issues on technical merit. Speaking on railway projects in Karnataka, Mr. Somanna said that works worth ₹7,654 crores have been announced in budget for 2025-26. 'During the UPA government, Karnataka got an insignificant amount for railway projects. Now, the amount has crossed ₹7,000 crore. Vande Bharat Express trains are already running across 13 districts in the State. There have been requests to run Vande Bharat trains between Mangaluru and Bengaluru and Belagavi and Bengaluru. These services will be launched shortly,' he said. Acknowledging concerns that rail services are becoming increasingly skewed toward upper class passengers due to the focus on air-conditioned coaches, Mr. Somanna said that Indian Railways will soon introduce 10,000 new general class coaches to better serve the needs of common passengers and address overcrowding in trains across the country. Mr. Somanna also noted that the Indian Railways is making significant savings of approximately ₹18,000 crore annually through electrification and promised that all new railway lines will be launched as electrified routes to ensure sustainability and cost-efficiency. 'As much as 44,000 km of railway lines have been doubled over the last 10 years. Electrification of several routes has led to significant savings, estimated at ₹17,000 crore to ₹18,000 crore, while also helping reduce air pollution. Out of the 300 Amrit Bharat railway stations being upgraded nationwide, 61 are located in Karnataka and are currently under development,' he said. Responding to comparisons with the UPA government, Mr. Somanna pointed out that during the 2009-10 fiscal year, ₹11,500 crore had been spent on doubling projects. In contrast, the present government has allocated ₹70,000 crore for such work in the 2025-26 fiscal year alone, he said arguing that this demonstrates a much stronger commitment to railway development than previous administrations.
