Boca Juniors reach top spot with 1-0 win over Rosario Central
BUENOS AIRES, Feb 28 (Reuters) - Boca Juniors moved to the top of Group A of the Argentine Primera Division Apertura tournament with a 1-0 home win over Rosario Central in a rain-soaked Bombonera stadium on Friday.
Milton Gimenez gave Boca an early lead in the 9th minute when Central goalkeeper Jorge Broun parried a powerful shot from Carlos Palacios and the rebound flew to the striker, who headed home.
The hosts almost doubled their lead in the second half when Edison Cavani's deep pass found Palacios, but his close-range strike was ruled out for offside after a VAR review.
Boca's fifth win of the season lifted them to the top of Group A on 17 points, two clear of second-placed Estudiantes, who face River Plate on Saturday. Central continue to lead Group B on 17 points, one clear of Independiente, who face Banfield on Sunday.

Cieran Slicker endures nightmare start for Scotland as Steve Clarke's men suffer TWO major blunders against Iceland
GOALKEEPER Cieran Slicker's debut for Scotland could not have got off to a worse start against Iceland. The Ipswich Town shot-stopper replaced the injured Angus Gunn as Steve Clarke's men were forced into an early change in the June friendly. 3 Cieran Slicker kicking the ball away after conceding Credit: Reuters 3 Gunn forced to go off after just a few minutes Credit: Kenny Ramsay 3 Another howler from the Scotland defence Credit: PA Gunn, who is looking for a new club after being released by Norwich City, went off following a seemingly innocuous challenge after just a few minutes. It meant Clarke had to turn to his bench. And, a few minutes later, Slicker was forced to pick the ball out of his net with one of his first touches, as his dream moment turned into a nightmare. Andri Gudjohnsen capitalised on the goalkeeper's slack pass out, rifling the ball into the top corner from the edge of the box to give the visitors the lead on eight minutes. That mistake clearly dented the 22-year-old's confidence as he needlessly gave the ball away just minutes later before enduring a few other nervy moments. A few shakes of the head after the goal showed his frustration, with his arm going up to his team-mates to acknowledge his mistake. Scotland's next match is against Liechtenstein on Monday before going into the World Cup qualifiers in September. And on this evidence of this display, it is going to have to be a vastly improved performance. Clarke gave debut starts to Max Johnston, fresh from winning the Austrian Bundesliga with Sturm Graz, and striker George Hirst, while Kieran Tierney earned his 50th cap. John Souttar levelled for Scotland half way through the first half, converting Johnston's corner with a header. Steve Clarke likes Lennon Miller's stated ambition to become one of Scotland's top players But the Scots conceded again in calamitous fashion just before the break. An Iceland corner was not properly dealt with by the defence. The ball cannoned off Souttar inside the six-yard box and then Ferguson, with Slicker not covering himself in glory as the ball crept over the line. Incredibly, it went bad to worse for Slicker as Iceland made it three and it was another goalkeeping howler. More to follow... Sabalenka eyes claycourt supremacy with Gauff hoping to be second time lucky
PARIS, June 6 (Reuters) - The French Open women's singles final takes centre stage at Roland Garros on Saturday. World number one Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus takes on last year's semi-finalist, American Coco Gauff, as she looks to land her first French Open crown to add to her three Grand Slam titles. Long considered a hardcourt specialist, the 27-year-old top seed Sabalenka, the most powerful player on the tour, will try to establish herself as an all-rounder with her first title in Paris. She has already won back-to-back titles at the Australian Open in 2023-24 as well as the U.S. Open crown in 2024 but she had never before reached the final in Paris with the slower clay not naturally suited to her heavy-hitting game. Her three-set semi-final victory on Thursday over four-time French Open champion Iga Swiatek, who was looking to become the first woman since tennis turned professional in 1968 to win four editions of the tournament in a row, elevated Sabalenka to a new level. The Belarusian did not change her power game or adapt it to clay. Instead she used it effectively to forge past her opponent. Despite the closed roof that made the ball even slower, Sabalenka's serve was still a major weapon as she dished out a third-set bagel against Swiatek, who had been on a 26-match winning streak at the tournament and is nicknamed the 'queen of clay'. "I wasn't really trying to overhit," Sabalenka said after her semi-final win. "I didn't really think to overhit and hit harder than I usually do." It is this power that Gauff, a far more natural claycourt player than Sabalenka, will need to overcome. A finalist here in 2022, Gauff is also looking for her first singles crown in Paris. She won the women's doubles last year but will be looking to add the Suzanne Lenglen cup to her Grand Slam collection that so far has one major, the 2023 U.S. Open where she beat Sabalenka in the final. The American does not have anywhere near the punching power from the serve or baseline that her opponent will bring into the encounter but her athleticism, precision and ability to stay in the rallies will be key. One of the best movers on the tour, Gauff has dropped just one set en route to the final. She also superbly handled the pressure in her semi-final against local wildcard Lois Boisson, coping admirably with home crowd's vocal support for the surprise semi-finalist. "Obviously she's (Sabalenka) someone who has great big shots, and she's going to come out aggressive," Gauff said. "She's going to come out swinging. I think I just have to expect that and do my best to kind of counter that." FRENCH OPEN ORDER OF PLAY ON SATURDAY (prefix number denotes seeding) COURT PHILIPPE CHATRIER (not before 1300 GMT) 1- Aryna Sabalenka (Belarus) v 2-Coco Gauff (United States)
