Why do the Raiders insist on giving IOL Alex Cappa 1st-team reps?
Las Vegas Raiders interior offensive lineman Jackson Powers-Johnson split his time between playing left guard and center last season. Despite it being pretty obvious that Powers-Johnson's best fit was at center, first-year head coach Pete Carroll has made changes to the offensive line this offseason. Jordan Meredith is starting there, and Powers-Johnson has seen the majority of his reps at right guard. It's somewhat of a controversial decision. Coach Carroll believes Meredith is among the Raiders' five-best offensive linemen, and his undersized frame is best utilized at center. Even if you don't necessarily agree with sliding Powers-Johnson to guard, you at least understand Carroll's reasoning, as he continues sorting through the best up-front combinations. What doesn't compute is pretending Powers-Johnson isn't a surefire starter, however. That has occasionally happened at practice. At Wednesday's session, veteran guard Alex Cappa rotated in at right guard with the first-team offense, per reports. Cappa signed a two-year contract worth $11 million with the Raiders earlier this offseason after being released by the Cincinnati Bengals. The former Humboldt State standout hasn't been consistently healthy, having missed multiple practices at training camp. The veteran Cappa struggled last year, earning a pass-blocking grade of 39.7 from Pro Football Focus. Meanwhile Powers-Johnson is one of the young building blocks on the roster. The Raiders are insisting on making camp difficult for Powers-Johnson. Not only is the former Oregon performer not playing his best position, but he's also "competing" with an underperforming veteran. Coach Carroll should end the facade and anoint Powers-Johnson as the clear-cut starter.

Super Bowl champion wide receiver faces 3-game suspension, 49ers coach says
The San Francisco 49ers' wide receiving corps took another hit on Wednesday as head coach Kyle Shanahan said Demarcus Robinson faces a three-game suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy. The 49ers signed Robinson, a Super Bowl champion with the Kansas City Chiefs, in the offseason after he spent two years with the Los Angeles Rams. Shanahan told KNBR Radio that Robinson was suspended pending an appeal after he pleaded no contest last month to a misdemeanor DUI charge. The NFL declined to comment on the suspension, according to The Associated Press. Robinson was supposed to be one piece of the new targets for quarterback Brock Purdy. Instead, he will likely be absent from the team to start the year along with others who are banged up, including Brandon Aiyuk, Jauan Jennings and Russell Gage. He said last week he was "anxious" to hear the final verdict from the league. "Just waiting on the outcome to see what happens with that," Robinson said. "I really don't know the timeframe. Waiting to hear from them, obviously. It's all up to whatever the league says." Robinson had 31 catches for 505 yards and posted a career-high seven touchdowns. San Francisco also made the decision to trade Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders earlier this year. It will be a completely new look for the offense in 2025.

San Francisco 49ers, Las Vegas Raiders Connected to Major Trade
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The San Francisco 49ers have a messy contract situation on their hands with wide receiver Jauan Jennings, and the Las Vegas Raiders could take advantage of it. Bleacher Report's Alex Kay has proposed a deal in which the 49ers would send Jennings to the Raiders in exchange for fellow receiver Tre Tucker and a fourth-round draft pick, a move that would ease San Francisco's financial burden while also supplying Las Vegas with a terrific weapon to put alongside Jakobi Meyers. More news: Insider Drops Striking Statement on Bengals' Secret Weapon "If San Francisco isn't willing to meet his demands, it could be forced to trade the veteran in order to avoid the messy holdout spilling into the regular season," Kay wrote. "If he does become available, a team like the Raiders could quickly come calling." Jennings is entering the final year of his contract and is coming off of a breakout 2024 campaign in which he hauled in 77 receptions for 975 yards and six touchdowns. He is currently nursing a calf injury, which has kept him out of practice. The lack of a new deal is obviously an issue, too. SANTA CLARA, CA - OCTOBER 06: A San Francisco 49ers helmet on the field at Levi's Stadium on October 6, 2016 in Santa Clara, California. A 49ers Super Bowl champion passed away."Las Vegas is gearing up to make a run in the AFC West but needs to find more receiving talent to compete with the high-scoring offenses in the division," Kay added. "Adding Jennings in exchange for a late pick in the 2026 draft and underperforming wideout Tre Tucker—who could thrive in head coach Kyle Shanahan's system—could push the Raiders over the edge." More news: Michael Penix Jr. Earns Epic Comparison That Will Fire Up Falcons Fans Las Vegas definitely needs some more weapons, and Jennings would absolutely represent a good get in that regard. It would suddenly give Raiders quarterback Geno Smith a decent arsenal that also includes Meyers, tight end Brock Bowers and rookie running back Ashton Jeanty. Meanwhile, Tucker is just 24 years old and caught 47 passes for 539 yards and three scores last season. He could potentially flourish in a new system, especially with a better quarterback situation than he has had in Vegas the past couple of years.
