The Hindu4 days ago
Tamil Thalaivas has announced Pawan Sehrawat as the captain for the upcoming Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) 12 season while Arjun Deshwal has been named as the side's vice-captain.
Pawan became the most expensive player in PKL when Tamil Thalaivas signed him for Rs. 2.26 crore in Season 9. Representing the Reserve Bank of India, he has also brought pride to the nation, winning the gold medal at the 2019 South Asian Games and the 2023 Asian Kabaddi Championship.
Joining him in leadership is Arjun, a decorated raider who currently serves as a DSP in the Uttar Pradesh State police force. His stellar career includes winning the gold medal with the Indian national team at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.
Speaking about the leadership duo, head coach Sanjeev Balyan said, 'Pawan is a proven leader and one of the most feared players in the league. His ability to handle pressure, inspire his teammates, and deliver in crucial moments makes him the ideal captain to lead Tamil Thalaivas this season.'
'I've had the privilege of working with Arjun when he captained Jaipur Pink Panthers, and I know firsthand the dedication, discipline, and composure he brings to the game. He is a natural leader on and off the mat, and together with Pawan, they form a formidable leadership core,' the coach added.
Last season, the Thalaivas finished ninth on the points table, winning only eight matches out of the 22 fixtures, and failed to make the playoffs.

Jasprit Bumrah makes himself available ahead of Asia Cup 2025: Report

India's pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has confirmed his availability for the upcoming Asia Cup in Dubai, providing a major boost to the national side ahead of the crucial tournament. According to sources within the BCCI, Bumrah recently informed selectors that he is ready to return to action and has communicated his fitness status. Asia Cup squad to be finalised soon The senior selection committee, headed by Ajit Agarkar, is set to meet on August 19 in Mumbai to finalize a 15-member squad for the Asia Cup, which will be played between September 9 and 18 in the T20 format. Bumrah, who was released from Test duties after India's win at Edgbaston in July, last featured in international cricket during the T20 World Cup final against South Africa in June 2024. With the Asia Cup being a T20 event, the workload on Bumrah is expected to be more manageable compared to Test cricket, giving the management flexibility in choosing his spells. To ensure smooth preparations, the Indian team will travel early to the UAE. Most players will head directly for the Asia Cup, though the BCCI had initially proposed a preparatory camp in Bengaluru. Arriving a few days ahead will allow players to get acclimatized and practice before the tournament kicks off. Positive fitness updates for Team India Meanwhile, India's T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav has also been declared fit after completing rehabilitation from a lower-right abdominal hernia surgery in Germany earlier this year. Yadav underwent a detailed fitness program at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru and has now been cleared to participate. His return comes as a timely reinforcement, with his leadership and batting firepower crucial for India's campaign. Suryakumar had faced multiple injury setbacks over the past year, including surgeries for sports hernia and ankle issues. Despite that, he showcased his class in the IPL, scoring 717 runs for Mumbai Indians, finishing as the second-highest run-getter of the season. His fitness clearance ensures India will have both Bumrah and Yadav available, two key figures as the team aims for continental glory in Dubai

Shubman Gill unlikely for Asia Cup squad as Ajit Agarkar all set to reward Shreyas Iyer: Report

Ajit Agarkar and the rest of the All India Men's Senior Selection Committee will convene on Tuesday, August 19, to pick the squad for the upcoming Asia Cup. Suryakumar Yadav has cleared the fitness Test and is all set to lead India in the eight-team tournament, beginning September 9. There are several major decisions in front of the selectors. However, the biggest question is whether there can be a place for Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal. The selectors will pick the Asia Cup squad on Tuesday, August 19. (AFP) Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma have made the most of their chances in the shortest format. Hence, there are no grounds for dropping them. However, Shubman Gill (Test captain) and Jaiswal are two of the biggest names in Indian cricket right now. Hence, it needs to be seen whether the selectors are willing to take a brave call and keep the duo out for now. According to a report in Sportstar, the selectors are all set to make a bold call and leave Gill and Jaiswal out of the squad for the Asia Cup. Ajit Agarkar is all set to retain the core group that has excelled under Gambhir in T20Is recently. The Asia Cup ends on September 28, and the first Test against the West Indies begins on October 2. Considering the turnaround period, the selectors are likely to keep Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal fresh for the red-ball assignments. The same report states that Shreyas Iyer and Jitesh Sharma are likely to earn call-ups into the Asia Cup squad. In IPL 2025, Jitesh Sharma impressed one and all with his big-hitting exploits for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), who won their maiden title. Also Read: Shubman Gill for Asia Cup may look tempting, but it could severely backfire on Team India in more ways than one Shreyas Iyer led Punjab Kings to the IPL final, but they fell short against RCB in the summit clash. Neither Jitesh nor Shreyas has played in T20Is since Gautam Gambhir took over as the head coach. Shreyas last played a T20I in December 2023, while Jitesh made his last appearance in January 2024. Why pick Shreyas Iyer? According to the report, the selectors want an experienced middle-order batter in the conditions of the UAE for the Asia Cup. Hence, Shreyas Iyer is all but set to be picked. It must be mentioned that the right-handed batter played a crucial role in the UAE in the Champions Trophy 2025, which India eventually won after beating New Zealand in the summit clash. If Shreyas is indeed picked, then one between Shivam Dube and Rinku Singh might have to be dropped. Both Dube and Rinku were part of India's squad for the five-match T20I series against England in January 2025. Suryakumar Yadav will be attending the selection meeting for the Asia Cup. The tournament will begin on September 9 with India playing their first match on September 10 against the UAE. India are placed in Group A alongside Pakistan, UAE and Oman.
